The Buster Sword — Cloud's Single-Edged Slab From Final Fantasy VII, Hand-Forged in 5160 Spring Steel
Handed down from Angeal to Zack to Cloud, the Buster Sword is the most recognisable blade in video games, and this is it in forged steel. A straight single-edged slab with the clipped diagonal point, the two round through-holes at the ricasso, the riveted block guard and a short wrapped grip — hand-forged to order in Kathmandu in your choice of blade length, finish, wrap, fittings and cover.
Not an official or licensed Final Fantasy product. This is an independent, hand-forged interpretation of the Buster Sword as it appears in Final Fantasy VII. Final Fantasy, the Buster Sword, Cloud Strife, Zack Fair and Angeal Hewley belong to Square Enix; Everest Forge is not affiliated with Square Enix, and nothing on this page should be read as a claim otherwise. This is not a Berserk or Guts sword — it sits in our giant-sword collection beside them because buyers of one tend to want the other.
Underneath every option is the same sword: a 36-inch blade in hand-forged 5160 spring steel, around 178 mm wide and 8 mm on the spine, sharpened along one edge, on a full riveted tang under a 10-inch grip, at approximately 45.5 inches overall and 8.7 kg in the hand. Width is what makes a Buster Sword, so we kept the proportions of the game model and chose a spine that keeps the sword liftable.
From the Same Forge

Reference photographs of our Golden Age Guts sword from the same forge in Kathmandu, shown for size, finish and build quality; the Buster Sword on this page carries the single-edged slab, clipped point, twin holes and block guard of the render above, and is much wider. Every order is photographed on the scale before it ships.

Three Owners, One Sword
The Buster Sword belongs to Cloud Strife on the box of Final Fantasy VII, but it did not start with him. It was made for Angeal Hewley's family, carried by Angeal as a SOLDIER First Class who refused to let it get scratched, given to Zack Fair with the instruction to protect his honour and his dreams, and left in Cloud's hands on a cliff outside Midgar. By the time of Advent Children it is rusting in the ground as a grave marker, and Cloud sets it right. That is a lot of story for a slab of steel with two holes in it, which is why people who played the game thirty years ago still want one on the wall.
The design is simple and completely its own: a straight blade with a flat spine and one sharpened edge, the point clipped on a long diagonal, two round holes near the guard that held materia in the game, a thick rectangular guard studded with rivets, and a grip just long enough for two hands. We have kept those proportions — blade width to length, the angle of the clip, the placing of the holes — and built them in forged 5160 at a weight a collector can own.
Built as Steel, Not as a Shape
Most Buster Swords for sale are 3 mm stainless sheet cut to an outline with a cast handle bolted on, or foam. This one is forged from 5160 leaf spring, drawn out to width on the anvil, with the spine left full and a single edge bevel ground by hand; the clipped point is forged, not cut. The two holes are drilled and chamfered after heat treatment so they do not start cracks. The tang runs the full grip and is riveted through wooden scales under the wrap. The guard is a forged steel block, slotted over the blade and riveted; the cap is a plain forged collar. Nothing is cast, nothing is welded on.
The consequence is weight. At the standard 36-inch blade the Buster Sword is around 8.7 kg bare and 10.1 kg in its cover; the 45-inch build is over 14 kg. The game's sword, at a bit under six feet and a foot wide, would weigh well over 30 kg in steel at any sensible thickness, which is why nobody makes one at full size you can pick up. We say it plainly: this is a display and collector's sword, not a cutting sword, and we do not sell it as one.
Blade Length and Approximate Weight
Weights are forge estimates from the blade geometry. Every sword is weighed and photographed on the scale before it ships, and the photograph comes to you.
Which Blade Finish Suits a Buster Sword?
Handle, Fittings and Cover
The grip is wooden scales on the full tang under a leather wrap, 10 inches at the standard build — short, as the game draws it, with room for two hands. Brown is the wrap of the model and the one most buyers choose; black is the Advent Children look; red, blue, green and white are there for the collector who wants it to be theirs. The fittings cover the riveted block guard and the cap: black is the original; silver-iron is bare forged steel; brass reads closest to the gold-trimmed guard of the Remake; copper warms it.
The cover is not a conventional scabbard, and we say so. A fully enclosed wooden scabbard for a blade 178 mm wide would weigh more than most swords and split along the grain. Instead the Buster Sword ships with an open-back cover: a wooden back-board shaped to the blade, faced in leather, with buckle straps and a shoulder harness so the sword rides on the back the way Cloud carries it. Six leather colours. It protects the edge in transit and on a wall.
Engraving
The personalisation field takes a name, initials, a date, a dedication or a short line, cut into the flat between the holes and the guard. You can also upload a crest, a unit badge, a logo or a photograph and we reproduce it. We do not engrave third-party trademarks or copyrighted artwork — that includes Final Fantasy logos, SOLDIER insignia and character art — your own design, yes.
Want It Thicker, Thinner, Blunt, or the Fusion Swords?
A heavier display slab that only a stand will hold, a thinner collector's version, a blunt stage edge, a blade past 45 inches, or a different fantasy greatsword from your own reference — anything outside the option list is quoted individually through our custom forge service.

Standard Build Specification
Because every piece is hand-forged, small variation in weight, dimensions, grain and finish is normal; width, spine and grip scale with the blade length you choose.
An Honest Note on This Sword
An honest note. Three things worth saying plainly. First, it is heavy on purpose and lighter than the game on purpose. A full-size Buster Sword in steel would be over 30 kg and could not be hung, carried or shipped; ours keeps the width and the silhouette at a spine that keeps the standard build under nine kilograms. A slab this wide is edge-hardened and tempered rather than hardened through, is not balanced for cutting, and nobody should swing it at anything. Second, it is a fan interpretation of a game model, not a licensed product, and the holes are holes — nothing fits in them. Third, 5160 is not stainless, and a single-bevel blade has one very wide flat that will spot if it is left in damp leather. Oil it, store it out of the cover, and it will stay bright.
This Build Suits
- Final Fantasy VII collectors who want the sword in forged steel rather than stainless sheet or foam
- Display on a wall, a stand or a back-harness in a room, studio, office or shop
- Cosplay and photography where a real steel slab and finish matter more than carry time
- Giant-sword collectors who already have a Guts sword and want the other icon beside it
Look Elsewhere If
- You want a Berserk sword — see the Dragon Slayer Greatsword or the Guts Raider Greatsword
- You want a sword to cut or spar with — see our battle-ready swords
- You want a belt-carried sword with an enclosed scabbard; this one rides on the back
- You want a lightweight convention prop that you will carry all day; foam is the honest answer there
How Your Order Is Made
Caring for a Wide Single-Edged Slab
Wipe the slab down after handling and keep a light film of oil across both flats; with this much surface, a fingerprint left for a week will etch. Run the cloth through the two holes, which collect dust and damp. Do not store the sword strapped into its cover for long periods in a damp room. On a wall or a stand, oil it every few weeks in a humid climate and check the edge bevel, which is the thinnest steel on the sword. If you have it sharpened, keep the edge at the angle it came with. Brass and copper fittings patina with handling and polish back with any metal polish; black fittings and a black coated blade want only a dry cloth.
Shipping, Returns and Warranty
A Buster Sword ships in a wide, long crate, and shipping adds seven to ten days after the forge is done. Orders to the USA and Canada travel with FedEx; everywhere else ships on a DDP service, which means duties and taxes are settled before the parcel moves so there is nothing to pay on delivery. Every piece carries the Everest Forge manufacturer warranty against defects in forging and heat treatment. Because a configured and engraved sword is made to your specification, it falls outside our standard returns window except where the blade is faulty — full terms are on our shipping and returns page. Import rules on large edged blades vary by country and are the buyer's responsibility to check before ordering.

Questions About the Buster Sword
Is this a Guts or Berserk sword?
No. The Buster Sword is Cloud Strife's weapon from Final Fantasy VII, made by Square Enix, and has nothing to do with Berserk. Some sellers list it as a Guts sword because both are enormous slabs; it is not. Our Berserk swords are the Dragon Slayer, the Raider Greatsword and the Hundred-Man Slayer Greatsword.
How big is the real Buster Sword?
Square Enix has never published dimensions. Their full-size prop for the Remake measured about 185 cm, and scaled against Cloud the blade is around a foot wide. In steel at any sensible thickness that is over 30 kg, which is why the few full-size steel ones that exist weigh 20 kg or more and live on stands. Ours keeps the proportions at a size and weight you can own: around 45.5 inches overall and 8.7 kg at the standard 36-inch blade, up to 57 inches and 14.2 kg at 45.
Is it sharp, and on which side?
Yes, by default, along the single cutting edge; the spine is flat and unsharpened as in the game. Write "blunt" in the order note if you want a rounded display or stage edge.
Can I cut with it?
It is not sold for cutting or sparring, and we would not recommend swinging an 8 to 14 kg slab at anything. It is edge-hardened and tempered rather than hardened through, and it is not balanced for use. Treat it as a collector's piece.
Do the holes do anything?
In the game they hold materia. On ours they are two round through-holes near the guard, drilled and chamfered after heat treatment so they cannot start a crack. Nothing fits in them, and we do not sell materia.
Why is there no proper scabbard?
Because a fully enclosed wooden scabbard for a blade 178 mm wide would weigh more than most swords and split along the grain. The Buster Sword ships with an open-back cover instead: a wooden back-board faced in leather, with buckle straps and a shoulder harness, so it rides on the back the way Cloud carries it.
Which blade length should I choose?
The 36-inch standard build is around 45.5 inches overall and 8.7 kg: unmistakably the Buster Sword on a wall, and one person can move it. The 45-inch blade is close to the game's proportion against a tall man, nearly five feet overall and over 14 kg, for the collector with the space and the wall anchors for it. The 28 and 30 are for smaller rooms and costume use.
Which finish looks most like the game?
Satin blade with black fittings and the brown wrap is the original game model. Polished with brass fittings is closest to the Remake. Acid wash gives it the weathered look of the sword at the cliff, and black coated with a bright edge is the dramatic display choice.
Can I order it left-handed?
Yes. Write "Left Handed" in the order note and the forge builds the grip wrap and the harness for a left-hand draw.
Can I have the Final Fantasy logo or SOLDIER insignia engraved?
No. We engrave your own name, initials, dates, text, crest, logo or photograph, but not third-party trademarks or copyrighted artwork, and that includes Square Enix logos, insignia and character art. The sword itself is an independent interpretation and is not an official product.
Will 5160 steel rust?
Yes, if you let it, and a single-bevel blade this wide has one very large flat. 5160 is a carbon spring steel, chosen because it absorbs shock instead of chipping, and it needs a film of oil and a dry place to live. Wipe it after handling, oil both flats and through the holes, and do not leave it strapped in the leather cover in a damp room. Black coated is the most forgiving finish.
How long does it take?
Longer than our standard blades. Allow three weeks at the forge for a slab this wide, then seven to ten days in transit. We send progress photographs while it is forged and a photograph of the finished sword on the scale before dispatch.
Can you make it bigger, thicker, or a different fantasy sword?
A heavier display slab, a blade past 45 inches, a different guard, or another game or anime greatsword from your own reference are all quoted individually through our custom forge service. Tell us the length and thickness and we will tell you honestly what it will weigh.
