Why Every Hand-Forged Blade Is Unique

How Your Finished Blade Compares With the Live Preview

Under every Live Custom Preview you will see the note “Actual product may vary slightly.” This page explains what that means. The live preview in our Build Your Own Blade builder is a digital illustration of the options you choose. Your actual blade does not exist yet — it is forged by hand in Kathmandu only after you order. Because every piece is made by a smith from steel, wood, horn and leather, the finished blade will match your chosen options but will not be a pixel-for-pixel copy of the image on screen.

The short version

  • What always matches: the blade type, steel, and every option you selected — finish, handle material, fittings, scabbard colour, length and engraving.
  • What can vary: wood grain and shade, horn colour, leather tone, the surface character of the blade finish, and small differences in weight and dimensions.
  • Why: nothing is held in stock. Each blade is an individual hand-forged piece, not a factory copy.

What the Live Preview Actually Is

When you pick a blade finish, a handle, a guard or a scabbard in the builder, the preview panel assembles an image of that combination so you can see how your choices work together. It is a design guide. It shows the layout, the materials and the overall look of your build accurately enough to choose with confidence.

It is not a photograph of the blade you will receive, because that blade has not been made. Everest Forge works on a forge-on-demand model: your order is the instruction that starts the work at the anvil.

Why a Hand-Forged Blade Varies

Each part of your blade is shaped, ground, fitted and finished by hand. These are the differences you can reasonably expect.

Blade and FinishSatin, polished, coated, acid-wash and raw forge finishes are all applied by hand. Grind lines, hammer texture, forge scale and acid-wash patterning are unique to each blade and will not repeat the pattern shown in the preview.
Rosewood and WhitewoodWood is a natural material. Grain, figure and shade differ from one piece of timber to the next, so your handle may be lighter, darker or more strongly figured than the image.
HornBuffalo horn ranges from solid black to streaked with grey, brown or cream. No two horn handles look the same, and the streaking cannot be chosen in advance.
Leather, Scabbards and Handle WrapsScabbards, sheaths and handle wraps are hand-cut, hand-stitched, hand-wound and hand-dyed. The colour you select is the colour you receive, but the exact tone, stitching, tooling and the spacing of a wrap can differ slightly between hides and dye batches.
Brass, Copper and Iron FittingsGuards, bolsters, chapes and pommels are shaped and polished by hand. Proportions may differ a little from the image, and these metals naturally darken and develop patina with time and handling.
Engraving and PersonalisationThe preview shows where your text or logo will sit. The smith sizes and positions the final engraving to suit the real blade or scabbard, and very fine detail in an uploaded logo may be simplified so it reads cleanly in steel or leather.

Weight and dimensions can also vary slightly from the listed figures. This is normal for hand-forged work and does not affect strength, heat treatment or performance.

How Size Is Shown in the Preview

On builders that offer more than one length, the blade image in the preview stays the same size on your screen whichever length you choose. To show the real difference, the preview adds a measuring tape and a mobile phone beside the blade as a size reference, and these change scale with each length option.

Please read the length from the option you selected and from the measurements listed on the page, not from how large the image appears on your device.

Screens, Lighting and Colour

Phones, tablets and monitors all show colour differently, and brightness or night-mode settings change it again. A rosewood handle or a brown scabbard can look warmer, cooler, lighter or darker on your screen than it does in your hand. Polished steel and brass also reflect their surroundings, so they look different in every light.

Normal Variation and What Is Not Normal

Normal for Handmade Work

  • Different wood grain or shade from the preview
  • Horn that is plain black or streaked
  • A slightly lighter or darker leather tone
  • Hammer marks, grind lines and forge texture
  • Small differences in weight and dimensions
  • Engraving sized to suit the real blade

Not Normal — Tell Us

  • A different option from the one you ordered, such as horn instead of rosewood
  • The wrong blade length or the wrong scabbard colour
  • A missing accessory you selected, such as a karda, chakmak or stand
  • Wrong or misspelled engraving text
  • A defect in forging or heat treatment

Want Something Exact?

If a particular detail matters to you — darker wood, plain black horn, a specific engraving size, a left-handed build — write it in the order note at checkout. Our smiths read every note and will follow it wherever the material allows.

Need a fully bespoke piece? If the builder does not offer what you have in mind, send us your design and we will forge it to your specification.

If Something Is Not Right

Every piece carries the Everest Forge manufacturer warranty against defects in forging and heat treatment. If your blade arrives with a different option from the one you ordered, or with a fault, contact us with your order number and clear photographs and we will put it right.

Reach us through the contact page or on WhatsApp at +977 9851015547.

Natural variation in grain, shade, texture and hand-finishing, as described on this page, is part of a hand-forged blade and is not treated as a defect.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will my blade look exactly like the preview?
It will match every option you selected, but it will not be an exact copy of the image. The preview is a digital illustration, and your blade is forged by hand after you order, so grain, shade, texture and small proportions will be its own.

Why is the wood or horn on my blade a different colour from the picture?
Rosewood, whitewood and buffalo horn are natural materials. Each piece has its own grain, colour and streaking, and your screen also affects how the colour appears in the preview.

Is a difference in appearance a defect?
No. Variation in wood grain, horn colour, leather tone, forge texture and small dimensions is normal for handmade work. A wrong option, a missing accessory, incorrect engraving text or a fault in forging or heat treatment is not normal, and we will put it right.

Does the preview show the true size of the blade?
No. The blade image stays the same size on screen for every length. Use the length option you selected, the listed measurements and the measuring-tape reference in the preview to judge size.

Can I ask for a specific grain, shade or detail?
Yes. Write your request in the order note at checkout and our smiths will follow it wherever the material allows. For a fully bespoke design, use the custom forge request page.

What should I do if my blade arrives with the wrong option?
Contact us through the contact page or on WhatsApp at +977 9851015547 with your order number and clear photographs, and we will put it right.
