Seax Swords – Forged Blades of the Saxons & Vikings
Discover our hand-forged Seax swords, inspired by the iconic weapons of the Germanic tribes, Saxons, and early medieval warriors. Each blade in this collection is a tribute to history—expertly crafted from high carbon 5160 leaf spring steel and designed to reflect the powerful, utilitarian style of ancient seaxes.
The Seax (also spelled sax, sæx, or sex) was a short sword or large fighting knife widely used during the Migration Period and Early Middle Ages. Known for its rugged single-edged blade and practical design, the seax served as both a battlefield weapon and a symbol of cultural identity, especially among the Saxons. Its name is rooted in the Old English word for “knife,” and it remains an enduring icon in Anglo-Saxon and Viking heritage.
Seaxes typically feature:
-
A thick, single-edged blade
-
Centerline tang with a wood or horn handle
-
A variety of blade shapes including broken-back, broad, and long seax forms
-
Wearable horizontal scabbards with edge upward
Our forge produces several types of seax swords, including:
-
Short Seaxes for utility and sidearm use
-
Broken-Back Seaxes, similar to modern clip-point blades
-
Long Seaxes, the primary blade of warriors from the 7th century onward
Each blade is fully sharpened, water-tempered for durability, and ready for real-world use—whether in reenactment, bushcraft, or collection.
We also accept custom orders for seax swords.
Whether you're looking to replicate a specific historical type or create a unique hybrid with modern materials, our master bladesmiths can craft a custom seax knife or long seax sword to your specifications.
