Kothimora Kukri — Hand-Forged Ceremonial Khukuri with Silver Scabbard

Kothimora Kukri — Hand-Forged Ceremonial Khukuri with Silver Scabbard

Kothimora Kukri — Hand-Forged Ceremonial Khukuri with Silver Scabbard from Nepal

The most prestigious form of the Nepali kukri. 8 hand-forged Kothimora ceremonial khukuris with hand-engraved silver-decorated scabbards — including authentic regimental presentation pieces for the British Gurkha Brigade, the Royal Gurkha Rifles, the 3rd Gurkha Rifles, the Queen's Gurkha Signals, and the Gurkha Transport Regiment. Each piece combines two distinct Nepali heritage crafts: Kami caste blade forging at our Kathmandu workshop, paired with hand-engraved silver scabbard work by Nepali silversmiths in the Patan-Kathmandu silver tradition.

This is the kukri presented to a retiring Gurkha officer. The kukri given on a son's commissioning. The kukri carried by Nepali kings. The kukri a family passes down across generations as a genuine heirloom — not a working blade, not an EDC, but a ceremonial honor.

Hand-forged 5160 spring steel blade by Kami blacksmiths  ·  Hand-engraved silver-decorated scabbard by Nepali silversmiths  ·  Authentic Brigade of Gurkhas regimental cap badges  ·  8 designs from $184.99 to $224.99  ·  Custom regimental work and solid-silver commissions available  ·  Free text personalisation (recipient name, date, dedication)  ·  Direct from forge — not a marketplace

What Is a Kothimora Kukri?

"Kothimora" comes from the Nepali words "koth" (sheath / scabbard) and "mora" (ornament / decoration). Together: the ornamented scabbard tradition. A Kothimora kukri is a hand-forged khukuri paired with a scabbard covered in hand-engraved silver decoration — embossed badges, regimental insignias, royal motifs, religious iconography, or ornamental Nepali patterns. Some pieces feature gold-plated highlights, mother-of-pearl inlays, or precious stone settings on the most prestigious commissions.

Kothimora is the highest-status form of the kukri in Nepali tradition. Historically, only Nepali nobility, royal court members, and senior Gurkha officers carried Kothimora pieces. In the modern Brigade of Gurkhas, the Kothimora kukri is the standard regimental retirement gift presented to a Gurkha officer upon completion of his service — a tradition that continues to this day across all Gurkha Brigade regiments.

The Two Crafts Behind Every Kothimora

What makes a real Kothimora distinct from a decorative imitation: it requires two separate Nepali heritage crafts coming together in one piece.

The Blade — Kami caste forging. Hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel by Kami caste blacksmiths in our Kathmandu workshop. Same forging standards as our British Gurkha Army (BSI Service No.1, 2008), Nepal Army, and Nepal Police military supply contracts. Mirror-polished or semi-polished finish for ceremonial presentation.

The Scabbard — Nepali silversmith craft. The silver scabbard work is done by separate artisans in the Patan-Kathmandu silver-craft tradition, one of South Asia's oldest continuous metalworking lineages. Each piece is hand-cut, hammered, embossed, and engraved using traditional tools — chisels, punches, and burins worked over the silver sheets that wrap the wooden scabbard core. Regimental cap badges, eagle motifs, royal crowns, kukri cross emblems, and ornamental Nepali patterns are individually hand-formed, never stamped or laser-cut.

Both crafts come together in our finished pieces. One Kothimora kukri represents two ancient Nepali traditions.

The British Gurkha Brigade Tradition

The Kothimora kukri serves a specific role in the British Gurkha Brigade: it is the official retirement and presentation gift. When a Gurkha officer completes his service — typically after 22 to 30 years — he is presented with a Kothimora kukri bearing his regiment's cap badge, his name, his rank, and his dates of service engraved on the silver scabbard. The blade is hand-forged, the silver work is regimental-specific, and the piece becomes a permanent record of his service.

The same tradition applies for officer commissioning, regimental milestones, command transfers, formal regimental presentations, and ceremonial Brigade events. A serving Gurkha officer may receive multiple Kothimora kukris during his career — each marking a milestone.

Our Kothimora regimental collection includes pieces for:

Royal Gurkha Rifles — the senior infantry regiment of the Brigade of Gurkhas, formed in 1994 from the amalgamation of the four British Gurkha rifle regiments. Hand-forged 10" blade with rosewood handle and gold-plated regimental cap badge on hand-engraved silver scabbard. ($224.99)

3rd Gurkha Rifles (Queen Alexandra's Own) — historic regiment now part of the Indian Army Gorkha lineage, but still represented in heritage collecting. 10" hand-forged blade with 5" buffalo horn handle and regimental badges on silver scabbard. ($224.99)

The Queen's Gurkha Signals — elite specialist regiment within the Brigade of Gurkhas. 8" hand-forged blade with cap badge silver scabbard. ($184.99)

Gurkha Transport Regiment — supporting Brigade regiment. Cap badge and Standing Gurkha figure on silver scabbard. ($224.99)

If you need a different regiment — Brigade of Gurkhas (general), 1st GR, 2nd GR, 4th GR, 5th GR, 6th GR, 7th GR, 8th GR, 9th GR, 10th GR, 11th GR, Indian Army Gorkha Regiments, Singapore SPF Gurkha Contingent, Brunei Gurkha Reserve Unit, Royal Brunei Land Forces Gurkha Battalion — we forge custom Kothimora commissions with any specific regimental cap badge, motto, deployment honors, or personal dedication. Send your reference image and details through Custom Forge for a quote.

Solid Sterling Silver & Premium Commissions

Our standard Kothimora collection (the 8 pieces shown above) features silver-plated and silver-decorated scabbards — beautiful, durable, hand-engraved silverwork at an accessible price tier ($184.99 – $224.99). For collectors and gift buyers wanting solid sterling silver scabbards, larger silver work, gem-set Kothimoras, or museum-grade royal-tier commissions, we offer custom commissions through our Custom Forge service.

Solid sterling silver Kothimora commissions are quoted individually based on silver weight (typically 200g – 1.5kg of sterling silver), complexity of engraving, gem inclusions, and any gold-plate work. Pricing for premium commissions starts in the high hundreds and scales to thousands depending on specifications.

Free Text Personalisation on Every Order

Every Kothimora ships with free text personalisation. Add the recipient's name, rank, dates of service, regimental motto, dedication message, retirement date, or wedding date — engraved on the blade or silver scabbard area. For Gurkha retirement gifts, the standard inscription includes the recipient's name, rank, regiment, and service dates.

Want decorative custom engraving (additional regimental badges, family crests, religious motifs, custom artwork) beyond simple text? That's our paid premium hand-engraving service — see our Etched & Engraved collection or request through Custom Forge.

Cultural & Diaspora Significance

For Nepali, Indian, Tibetan, and broader South Asian diaspora communities, the Kothimora kukri is more than a knife — it's a cultural anchor. Common occasions:

Weddings — Kothimora kukris are presented as wedding gifts in Nepali culture, particularly in Brahmin, Chhetri, and Newar traditions. The kukri symbolizes protection of the family, prosperity, and continuation of heritage.

Son's commissioning into Gurkha service — fathers historically present a Kothimora kukri to sons commissioning into Gurkha regiments. The blade represents continuity of warrior tradition.

Milestone family gifts — graduation, professional achievement, milestone birthdays, retirement, generational handoff. The Kothimora becomes a family heirloom.

Religious and ceremonial use — some Kothimora pieces feature Hindu deity engravings (Hanuman, Ganesh, Shiva, Tara) for ceremonial use during Dashain, Tihar, and other major festivals.

Diplomatic gifts — Nepali government and royal family historically presented Kothimora kukris as state gifts to foreign dignitaries. We've forged commissions for diplomatic presentation use.

Hand-Forged by Kami Blacksmiths, Hand-Engraved by Patan Silversmiths

Our 10 Kami caste blacksmiths — supervised personally by owner Deepak Sunar, himself a Kami — forge each blade using traditional water-tempering for differential hardness (hard cutting edge, tough flexible spine). The blade is then handed to our partner silversmiths in the Patan-Kathmandu silver tradition, who hand-engrave the scabbard work. Each finished piece passes through both crafts before going to photo approval and shipping.

Owner Deepak Sunar oversees the workshop personally. We send photos for your approval before shipping. No marketplace fees.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "Kothimora" mean?

"Kothimora" comes from the Nepali words "koth" (sheath / scabbard) and "mora" (ornament / decoration). Together it means "the ornamented scabbard tradition." A Kothimora kukri is a hand-forged khukuri paired with a scabbard covered in hand-engraved silver decoration — embossed regimental badges, royal motifs, religious iconography, or ornamental Nepali patterns. Kothimora represents the highest-status form of the kukri in Nepali tradition.

Is the silver on these scabbards solid sterling silver or silver-plated?

Our standard collection (the 8 pieces shown on this page, $184.99 – $224.99) features silver-plated and silver-decorated scabbard work — durable, beautifully hand-engraved, accessible-tier silverwork. For solid sterling silver scabbards, larger silver mass, gem-set Kothimoras, or museum-grade royal-tier commissions, we offer custom commissions through Custom Forge starting in the high hundreds and scaling to thousands depending on silver weight, engraving complexity, and any gold-plate or stone work.

Do you make Kothimora kukris with custom regimental badges?

Yes — this is one of our most-requested services for Gurkha retirement gifts. We've forged Kothimora pieces for all 11 historical British Gurkha Rifles regiments and their successor formations, Indian Army Gorkha Regiments (1, 3, 4, 5, 8, 9, 11 GR), Singapore SPF Gurkha Contingent, Royal Brunei Land Forces Gurkha Battalion, Brunei Gurkha Reserve Unit, Brigade of Gurkhas (general), and historical Hong Kong-era Gurkha units. Send your specific regiment's cap badge reference image through Custom Forge for a quote.

What's the standard Gurkha Brigade retirement Kothimora inscription?

The standard retirement Kothimora inscription includes the recipient's name, rank at retirement, regiment, and dates of service. Some inscriptions add the regimental motto, deployment honors (Falklands, Iraq, Afghanistan, Bosnia, etc.), or a personal dedication line ("Presented by [Mess/Officers/Battalion] on the occasion of his retirement"). All standard text engraving is included free with every order. Decorative additional artwork is paid premium hand-engraving.

How long before a retirement ceremony should I order?

Standard collection items: order 4–6 weeks before the ceremony (10–14 days forging + 5–7 days shipping plus buffer). Custom regimental Kothimora: order 6–10 weeks before (14–21 days production + shipping). Premium solid-silver commissions: order 8–12 weeks before. We prioritize retirement-gift orders and provide tracking and forging-progress updates. Contact us before ordering if you have a fixed ceremony date — we'll confirm timeline before processing.

Are Kothimora kukris functional or just for display?

The blades are fully functional — hand-forged from 5160 spring steel, water-tempered, sharpened to a working edge, built to the same military-grade standards used for our British Gurkha Army, Nepal Army, and Nepal Police supply contracts. However, Kothimora kukris are ceremonial pieces first — the silver scabbard work is decorative and not designed for daily field use. Most owners keep them on display, mantelpiece, or in shadow boxes rather than carrying them. The blade can be removed and used if needed, but doing so risks damage to the silver scabbard work.

Can a Kothimora kukri be presented as a wedding gift?

Yes — Kothimora kukris are traditional wedding gifts in Nepali culture, particularly in Brahmin, Chhetri, and Newar traditions. The kukri symbolizes protection of the family, prosperity, and continuation of heritage. We can add free text personalisation with the couple's names, wedding date, family motto, or dedication. Custom wedding-specific Kothimora designs (couple's initials integrated into silver work, family crest engraving, religious deity motifs) available through Custom Forge.

Why are these so much less expensive than the Kothimora kukris I've seen at $1,000–$3,000?

Two factors. First, the Kothimora pieces you've seen at $1,000–$3,000+ are typically solid sterling silver scabbard work with substantial silver weight (often 500g–1.5kg of sterling). Our standard collection at $184.99–$224.99 features beautifully hand-engraved silver-plated and silver-decorated scabbards — the same craft tradition, scaled to a more accessible price tier. Second, you're buying direct from the forge — no marketplace fee, no reseller markup. For genuine solid sterling commissions in the higher price tier, we offer custom-quote commissions through Custom Forge.

Can I order a Kothimora with Hindu or Buddhist religious iconography?

Yes — religious motifs are a traditional Kothimora silverwork theme. Popular requests include Hanuman, Ganesh, Shiva, Buddha, Tara, and the Om / Aum symbol. We can hand-engrave deities, mantras in Devanagari or Tibetan script, sacred geometry, or temple scenes onto the silver scabbard. Our engraving artisans are familiar with proper iconographic conventions for Hindu and Buddhist depictions. Submit reference images through Custom Forge for a quote.

Can the Kothimora kukri be insured for shipping?

Yes — every Kothimora ships with full insurance coverage proportional to the order value. We use DHL/FedEx Express for international shipping with full tracking. For premium commissions in the high-value range, we provide signed documentation, photographs, and craftsmanship certification suitable for insurance and customs purposes. UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Germany, and most of the EU have established DDP routes with duties paid upfront.

Are these Kothimora kukris legal to import for ceremonial use?

In most countries yes — Kothimora kukris are sold as cultural / ceremonial / collector items and historically have not faced the same import restrictions as combat-classified blades. However, fixed-blade import laws still apply: long-blade variants (10"+) may have additional regulations in some EU countries, UK, and certain Australian states. The decorative-ceremonial nature of Kothimora pieces typically helps customs classification, but buyers are responsible for confirming local regulations before ordering. We provide full documentation including craftsmanship certification and ceremonial-use designation on request.

Why buy from Everest Forge instead of a marketplace?

Genuine Kothimora kukris combining authentic Kami forging with hand-engraved Patan silversmith work are rare globally. Marketplaces sell mass-produced "ceremonial kukris" with stamped (not engraved) silver work, machine-pressed regimental badges, and no maker accountability. Real Kothimora — by hand — almost never available outside of direct-from-forge channels. Buying direct from us means real Kami forging, real hand-engraved silverwork, real customisation, photo approval before shipping, and the 30-day refund guarantee. Owner Deepak Sunar oversees the workshop personally. No marketplace fee.
