Large Blade Kukri & Khukuri — 15 to 36 Inch Hand-Forged Heavy Choppers

Large Blade Kukri & Khukuri — 15 to 36 Inch Hand-Forged Heavy Choppers

Large Blade Kukri & Khukuri — 15 to 36 Inch Hand-Forged Heavy Choppers from Nepal

12 hand-forged kukris with blade lengths from 15 inches to the largest kukri ever forged in Nepal — the 36-inch Buff Head Kukri. This is the heavy end of the kukri spectrum: maximum mass, maximum chopping authority, the blade that processes a fallen branch in one stroke instead of three. Forged by Kami caste blacksmiths in our Kathmandu workshop from 5160 high-carbon spring steel — the same steel and forging standard we use for our British Gurkha Army (BSI Service No.1, 2008), Nepal Army, and Nepal Police military supply contracts.

Hand-forged 5160 spring steel, water-tempered  ·  Blade lengths from 15" to 36"  ·  Heavy-mass, wide-belly chopping geometry  ·  Includes the largest kukri in Nepal (36" Buff Head, 4.5kg)  ·  Every product fully customisable  ·  Free text personalisation on every order  ·  Direct from forge — not a marketplace

What Makes a Kukri "Large"

A standard working kukri runs 10–14 inches in blade length. A long-reach kukri sword goes to 18–24 inches with a slim narrow profile. A large blade kukri is something different — it keeps the wide-bellied traditional kukri profile but scales the entire blade up. More steel. More forward weight. More chopping authority per swing.

Where a 12-inch kukri takes three strokes to chop a thick branch, a 15-inch large blade takes one. Where a kukri sword slices and reaches, a large blade chops and bites deep. This is the kukri at its most physically committed form — the blade for the buyer who wants maximum mass, not maximum length.

Large Blade vs Kukri Sword — Which Is Right for You?

Choose Large Blade if you want: maximum chopping power, wide blade belly, heavy forward mass for one-stroke wood processing, jungle clearing, brush cutting, large-game processing, ceremonial display weight.

Choose Kukri Sword if you want: long reach, slim narrow profile, slicing flow, lighter handling at length, two-handed combat-blade aesthetics.

Some products in this collection bridge both categories — a 24-inch Sirupate Sword Kukri is technically both a sword-length blade and a large blade. We list these in both collections so you find them whichever way you search.

The 36-Inch Buff Head — The Largest Kukri Ever Forged in Nepal

The Buff Head Kukri is our flagship oversized blade and one of the largest kukris on Earth. 36-inch blade, 4.5 kilograms total weight, hand-forged in Nepal by our Kami caste blacksmiths. It's a true ceremonial-grade weapon used historically for buffalo sacrifice during Nepali religious festivals like Dashain — a tradition the Buff Head still honours today.

More than a tool, the Buff Head is a statement piece: a museum-grade hand-forged blade that sits in collector cases, displays at cultural events, and occasionally still gets used for its original ceremonial purpose. If you've ever searched for "the world's biggest sword" or "longest knife" — this is the answer.

Buff Head Kukri ($424.99) — 36-inch blade. 4.5 kg. The largest kukri ever forged in Nepal.

Dragon Fang Kukri ($244.99) — 15" full-tang combat blade with etched dragon motif. Aggressive blade profile, fantasy-inspired styling on a real working kukri.

Greater Butcher Kukri ($244.99) — 15" full-tang heavy-duty all-purpose khukuri. Wide butcher-style blade for maximum chopping mass.

Ceremonial & Record-Setting

Who Buys Large Blade Kukris

Bushcraft and homestead users — buyers processing firewood, clearing brush on a property, or doing serious wood work want the maximum chopping mass a 15–18" blade gives. One stroke instead of three. Less fatigue over a long day.

Hunters processing big game — large-mass kukris handle bone, joint, and heavy carcass work that smaller blades struggle with.

Tactical and preparedness buyers — the buyer who wants ONE serious fixed blade in their kit reaches for the 15–18" Defender or Greater Eagle. Combat-blade authority with utility-blade reach.

Collectors who already own working kukris — the Buff Head 36" is the centerpiece you build a collection around. The 18" Greater 3 Chirra is the "ultimate kukri" piece for those at the next level.

Buyers who searched for the "biggest knife" or "longest sword" — and discovered the Nepali kukri tradition. Welcome. The Buff Head is what you came for.

Ceremonial and cultural buyers — the Buff Head and similar large blades are still used in traditional Nepali religious festivals and ceremonies. Some of our diaspora customers buy them for community Dashain celebrations.

Hand-Forged by Kami Caste Blacksmiths — Why Forging a Large Blade Is Different

Forging a large kukri is not the same job as forging a smaller one scaled up. The thermodynamics are different — large blades hold heat differently, distribute stress differently under hammer impact, and require longer at temperature with more passes. A small forging mistake on a 12-inch blade is recoverable. The same mistake on a 36-inch blade can ruin the whole piece.

Our 10 Kami caste blacksmiths — supervised personally by owner Deepak Sunar, himself a Kami — handle large-blade forging using traditional techniques refined over generations. This is one of the harder skills in kukri craft. Most factory-stamped "large kukris" cheat by either machine-forging or grinding heavy bevels into pre-rolled stock. We don't. Each blade is hand-shaped at the anvil, water-tempered traditionally for differential hardness (hard cutting edge, tough flexible spine), and finished by hand.

Every product page has customisation options. Choose handle material (rosewood, buffalo horn, water-buffalo bone, hardwood), scabbard style (traditional buffalo leather, sword-style scabbard), blade finish (polished, semi-polished, raw-forged, blackened), guard configuration (full guard, partial bolster, traditional handle), and add free text personalisation. Want a specific length not in this collection — a 17", 19", 22" or even larger custom commission? Send your spec through Custom Forge. We've forged commissions up to 40+ inches.

Direct From the Forge — Not a Marketplace

"Large kukris" on online marketplaces are mostly factory-stamped, repurposed agricultural tools, or imported imitations not actually made in Nepal. Real hand-forged large kukris by Kami caste blacksmiths are rare globally — and almost never available with the customisation, photo-approval, and direct-maker accountability you get buying direct from us. We send photos of your finished blade for approval before shipping. You can request changes. No marketplace fee inflating the price.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the largest kukri you make?

The Buff Head Kukri at 36 inches — the largest kukri ever forged in Nepal and one of the biggest hand-forged blades in the world. 4.5 kg total weight. Hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel by our Kami caste blacksmiths. Used historically for buffalo sacrifice during Nepali religious festivals, today it serves as a centerpiece collector item, museum display blade, and ceremonial weapon. We've also forged custom commissions up to 40+ inches.

What's the difference between a large blade kukri and a kukri sword?

Large blade kukri keeps the wide-belly traditional kukri profile but scales it up — maximum chopping mass, heavy forward weight, one-stroke wood processing. Kukri sword takes the slim Sirupate-pattern blade and extends it to 18–24" — long reach, slicing flow, two-handed handling. Both can be 18"+, but the geometry serves different purposes. Choose large blade for chopping authority, kukri sword for reach and slicing.

What's a 15-inch kukri actually used for?

15-inch kukris are the entry point to "heavy chopper" territory. Practical for: bushcraft and serious wood processing (firewood, branches, kindling at scale), brush clearing, hunting and large-game processing, tactical / preparedness fixed-blade carry, ceremonial display, and the buyer who wants a kukri that visually says "this is serious." Still practical to swing one-handed for long sessions, unlike the 18+ inch range which becomes more fatiguing.

Are these kukris functional or just decorative?

Fully functional. Every blade in this collection is sharpened to a working edge, hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, water-tempered, and built to the same military-grade standards we use for British Gurkha Army, Nepal Army, and Nepal Police supply contracts. The 36" Buff Head is fully sharpened and functional — it's used in real ceremonial contexts. These are working blades that happen to also display beautifully.

Can I get a custom 17", 20", or other specific length?

Yes — send your spec through our Custom Forge page. We can forge any blade length from 15" upward, in any traditional Nepali pattern (Bhojpure, Panawal, Angkhola, Sirupate, Chitlange), with any handle and scabbard configuration. We've handled commissions from 17" working choppers to 40+ inch ceremonial pieces. Each custom commission gets a quote, design refinement, photos for approval, and the 30-day refund guarantee.

Is a 15"+ kukri legal to own and import?

In most countries yes, but long-blade kukris (18"+) are subject to specific import, transport, and ownership regulations in some jurisdictions. UK buyers should verify current legislation regarding curved blades over 50cm. Australia requires permits in some states for blades over certain lengths. Some EU countries have specific import duties on edged weapons. Buyers are responsible for confirming local regulations before ordering. We ship in compliance with origin and destination customs rules.

How heavy is a typical 15"+ large blade kukri?

15" kukris typically weigh 850g–1.2kg. 16" working kukris weigh 1.0–1.4kg. 18" heavy choppers weigh 1.2–1.7kg. The 36" Buff Head ceremonial kukri weighs 4.5kg. All weights include the handle. Heavier blades chop harder per stroke but tire the arm faster — the trade-off is real. Most buyers find the 15–16" range the practical sweet spot for extended use; the 18"+ range becomes specialty territory for shorter sessions or two-handed use.

Why choose a large kukri over a machete?

A machete excels at light brush, vines, and grass — its thin blade bites fast through soft material but bounces off hard wood. A large blade kukri has the thickness and forward-curve geometry to handle hardwood, large branches, and heavy chopping that machetes struggle with. The kukri's curve concentrates force at the belly of the blade for genuine wood-processing authority. If your work mixes brush and serious wood, a 15–18" kukri replaces both a small machete and a small axe in your kit. Trade-off: kukris are heavier than machetes, so for pure light brush work, a machete still wins.

How long does the 36" Buff Head take to forge and ship?

The Buff Head Kukri takes 10–14 days to forge (vs 5–7 days for our standard kukris) due to the size, mass, and forging complexity. Express shipping adds another 5–7 days. Total: 21–28 days door to door. Some destinations may require additional customs documentation due to the unusual size. We send forging-progress photos and final approval photos before shipping.

Can large blade kukris be used for two-handed swinging?

Some can. The Greater Eagle Khukuri (18"), Greater 3 Chirra Khukuri (18"), and Large Panawal Angkhola (18") have handle lengths that accommodate two-handed grip when needed for maximum chopping force. The 15–16" range is primarily one-handed. The 36" Buff Head is two-handed by necessity. For dedicated two-handed long-blade kukris, see also our Kukri Sword collection, which includes purpose-built two-handed kukri swords.

What's the price range?

From $174.99 (Defender Khukuri 15") to $424.99 (Buff Head 36"). Most working-size large blades fall in the $224–$249 range. The Buff Head sits alone at the top as a record-setting ceremonial commission piece.

Why buy from Everest Forge instead of a marketplace?

Most "large kukris" on online marketplaces are factory-stamped, repurposed agricultural tools, or imported imitations not actually made in Nepal. Real hand-forged large kukris by Kami caste blacksmiths are rare globally. Buying direct from us means the blade is real, the forging is hand-done, and you're talking to the actual Kathmandu workshop. Owner Deepak Sunar is a Kami caste blacksmith. Customisation, photo approval before shipping, 30-day refund. No marketplace fee.
