Buff Head Kukri – The Largest Ceremonial Khukuri in Nepal

The Buff Head Kukri is an extraordinary ceremonial blade, recognized as the largest kukri ever forged in Nepal and one of the biggest in the world. Measuring an impressive 36 inches in blade length and weighing around 4.5 kilograms (10 lbs), this massive khukuri is traditionally used during the Dashain festival — Nepal's most important cultural celebration — for the ritual beheading of large buffaloes in a single clean strike.

Also known as the “Buffalo Head Kukri,” this blade plays a sacred role during the religious day of Maar, when offerings are made to the goddess Durga. According to deep-rooted belief, the sacrificial blow must be completed in one clean cut to avoid ill-fortune — making the precision and power of this blade critical. While it is fully functional, the Buff Head Kukri is most often revered as a ceremonial and display piece due to its immense size and cultural significance.

Forging this blade is a feat of craftsmanship. It takes three expert bladesmiths nearly five days to complete, using traditional hand tools and immense effort to join 2–3 pieces of carbon steel into one seamless blade. The rosewood handle, which ranges between 12–15 inches, balances the massive blade and provides grip for ceremonial handlers.

The khukuri comes with two fully functional side knives, each with a blade length of about 8–10 inches — capable of independent use. A full leather scabbard with a cottonwood core, wrapped in buffalo hide, protects and houses the blade.
