Chirra Kukri & Khukuri — Fullered Blades Hand-Forged in Nepal (1, 3, & 5 Chirra)

Chirra Kukri & Khukuri — Fullered Blades Hand-Forged in Nepal (1, 3, & 5 Chirra)

Chirra Kukri & Khukuri — Fullered Blades Hand-Forged in Nepal (1, 3, & 5 Chirra)

20 hand-forged kukris with single, double, triple, and the rare five-chirra fuller configurations. Each one is shaped at the anvil — the chirras are forged into the blade, not cut afterwards with a grinder. That distinction matters. A forged-in chirra retains the steel's grain structure and adds real engineering strength; a cut fuller is just a cosmetic groove. Our Kami caste blacksmiths in Kathmandu still chirra by hand — a forging skill that's increasingly rare even within Nepal.

What Is a Chirra?

"Chirra" (sometimes spelled chirrah, chirera, or transliterated as chira) is the Nepali word for the fuller — the long groove forged into the body of the blade. The Western knife world calls it a "blood groove" (which is misleading — the function isn't drainage). The proper engineering term is "fuller," and chirras are the Nepali kukri version of this centuries-old metalworking technique.

Chirras are described by count in Nepali:

Ek Chirra — single fuller. Often paired with the Angkhola pattern ("body groove"), this is the most traditional form. Reduces blade weight while reinforcing structural rigidity along the spine.

Dui Chirra — double fuller. Two parallel grooves running along the blade. More structural reinforcement, more visual character.

Tin Chirra — triple fuller. The most popular configuration in our modern Chirra collection. Three grooves create three "ribs" of steel that work together like an I-beam to maximize stiffness while minimizing weight.

Panch Chirra — five fuller. Rare. Requires high-skill forging because each fuller has to be perfectly symmetrical and even-depth across the blade length. Most kukri makers don't attempt 5-chirra blades because the difficulty is too high relative to demand. We forge them as part of our craftsmanship signature.

The Engineering — Why Chirras Make a Better Working Blade

Imagine an I-beam in a building. The cross-section isn't a solid rectangle — it's an "I" shape because that distribution of mass gives maximum stiffness with minimum weight. An I-beam with a flat bar of equal weight would be far less rigid.

The chirra principle is the same. By moving steel away from the centre of the blade and concentrating it along the spine and edge, the blade becomes stiffer along its length, lighter overall, and better at absorbing shock. The benefits in real use:

Lower weight, equal strength. A 12-inch 3-chirra blade can weigh 100–150 grams less than a flat-back blade of identical length and steel — without losing chopping authority.

Better balance. Chirras shift the blade's centre of mass closer to the handle, giving you more control. Less fatigue over a long day in the field.

Improved shock absorption. The fuller geometry dampens vibration. Chopping into hardwood, bone, or dense material transmits less shock to your hand.

Increased rigidity along the cut. The fuller acts like a structural rib. The blade resists flex and twist at the moment of impact, putting more cutting energy into the target instead of bouncing back into your wrist.

Aesthetic depth. A chirra blade has visual character a flat-back blade doesn't. Light catches the fullers differently along the curve. It signals craftsmanship at a glance.

Forged-In vs Machine-Ground — Why It Matters

Most factory "fullered" knives have their grooves cut with a grinding wheel after the blade is shaped. This removes steel but does nothing to the grain structure of the metal — and often weakens the blade because the cut grinds through the heat-treated outer layer.

A forged-in chirra is shaped at the anvil while the steel is hot. The blacksmith uses a fullering tool and hammer to displace the steel sideways, compressing and aligning the grain structure along the new geometry. The result is a blade that's actually stronger where the chirra runs — not just lighter and more decorative. This is the traditional Nepali method our Kami blacksmiths still use, and it's one of the harder skills in kukri craft.

Which Chirra Configuration Should You Choose?

For traditional working use, daily tasks, and authentic single-fuller heritage → Single Chirra (Angkhola Guardian, Trinity Angkhola). Most classical, simplest, time-tested.

For best all-around balance of weight, strength, and visual impact → 3-Chirra. The most popular configuration. Strong ribs of steel between three grooves give you nearly all the weight benefit with proven structural reliability. If you're not sure which to pick, this is it.

For maximum lightness, advanced craftsmanship, premium aesthetic, and a piece nobody else has → 5-Chirra. The hardest to forge, the rarest in the market, the most visually striking. For the buyer who wants the technical pinnacle.

Hand-Forged by Kami Caste Blacksmiths

Chirra forging is one of the harder kukri craft skills. Each fuller has to be forged into the steel symmetrically along the entire blade length while the metal is at forge temperature. The blacksmith works to a tight time window — the steel cools fast — and any inconsistency shows when the blade is finished. Three fullers means three times the precision; five fullers means five times.

Most factory-stamped "fullered" kukris skip the forging process entirely and grind the grooves with a wheel. The result looks similar but loses the structural advantages of the forged-in chirra. Our 10 Kami caste blacksmiths in Kathmandu still chirra by hand using traditional fullering tools — the same way Nepali Kamis have been doing it for centuries. Owner Deepak Sunar, himself a Kami caste blacksmith, oversees the workshop personally.

The same forging standards we use for our British Gurkha Army (BSI Service No.1, 2008), Nepal Army (2015–2018), and Nepal Police (2016–2017) supply contracts go into every chirra kukri.

Open Customisation on Every Chirra Kukri

Every product in this collection has customisation options on its product page. Choose your blade length (where the design supports variation), handle material (rosewood, buffalo horn, yak bone, hardwood), scabbard style, blade finish (polished, semi-polished, raw-forged), and add free text personalisation. Want a specific chirra count not shown — a 4-chirra in a Sirupate profile, a custom 5-chirra in a smaller blade size, or a fully bespoke fullered design? Send us photos or sketches through our Custom Forge page. We forge to your spec.

Direct From the Forge

"Fullered kukris" on online marketplaces are mostly machine-ground or stamped-and-cut versions that mimic the look but lose the forging integrity. Real forged-in chirras by Kami caste blacksmiths are increasingly rare — and rarer still with the customisation, photo-approval, and direct-maker accountability you get buying direct. We send photos of your finished blade for approval before shipping. You can request changes. No marketplace fees inflating the price.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does "chirra" mean in English?

Chirra (also spelled chirrah, chira, chirera) is the Nepali word for fuller — the long groove forged into the body of a kukri blade. In Western knife terminology it's sometimes called a "blood groove" (a misleading name; the function isn't drainage). The proper engineering term is "fuller," and chirra is the Nepali tradition of this centuries-old metalworking technique. Chirras are described by count: Ek Chirra (single), Dui Chirra (double), Tin Chirra (triple), and the rare Panch Chirra (five fullers).

Why do some kukris have fullers (chirras)?

Chirras serve four engineering purposes: they reduce blade weight without sacrificing strength (like an I-beam in construction), they shift the blade's balance closer to the handle for better control, they absorb shock at the moment of impact reducing wrist fatigue, and they increase rigidity along the cut by acting as structural ribs. There's also an aesthetic dimension — multi-chirra blades show a level of forging skill that flat-back blades don't. Read our full deep-dive: Why Some Kukris Have Fullers (Chirra).

What's the difference between 1-chirra, 3-chirra, and 5-chirra?

1-Chirra (Ek Chirra) is a single fuller — the most traditional configuration, often combined with the Angkhola pattern. 3-Chirra (Tin Chirra) is a triple fuller — the most popular modern configuration, with three grooves creating three structural ribs of steel for maximum balance of weight reduction and stiffness. 5-Chirra (Panch Chirra) is a five-fuller blade — rare, requires top-tier forging skill because all five grooves must be symmetrical and even-depth across the blade length. Most makers don't attempt 5-chirra. We do.

Is a forged-in chirra different from a machine-ground fuller?

Yes — significantly. A forged-in chirra is shaped at the anvil while the steel is hot, using a fullering tool to displace and compress the steel along the new geometry. The grain structure aligns with the chirra, making the blade actually stronger where the fuller runs. A machine-ground fuller is cut into a finished blade with a grinding wheel after forging. It removes steel but does nothing to the grain structure, and often grinds through the heat-treated outer layer, weakening the blade slightly. All our chirras are forged-in, the traditional Nepali way.

Which chirra count should I get if I'm new to kukris?

3-Chirra (Tin Chirra) is the recommended starting point. It gives you nearly all the engineering benefits (weight reduction, balance, shock absorption, rigidity) with proven reliability and a reasonable price point. Most of our 3-chirra working models are in the $109–$160 range. Once you understand how a chirra blade feels in hand, you can decide whether to go to 5-chirra premium pieces or down to traditional single-chirra Angkhola configurations.

Is a 5-chirra kukri actually stronger than a 3-chirra?

Stronger isn't quite the right word — it's more about weight-to-strength ratio. A 5-chirra blade has more material removed via the fullers, so it's lighter than a flat-back blade of the same dimensions. The five ribs of steel between fullers maintain rigidity. But once you're past 3 chirras, the diminishing returns kick in: each additional fuller adds less practical benefit and more forging difficulty. 5-chirra is more about advanced craftsmanship and visual impact than practical superiority over 3-chirra. The 5-chirra blade is harder to forge correctly, which is why fewer makers offer them.

Are these chirra kukris fully functional working blades?

Yes — every chirra kukri in this collection is fully functional, sharpened to a working edge, water-tempered for differential hardness, and forged to the same military-grade standards we use for our British Gurkha Army, Nepal Army, and Nepal Police supply contracts. The chirra geometry isn't decorative — it's structural. These are real working blades that happen to also look beautiful.

Can I get a custom chirra count or fuller configuration?

Yes. Send your spec through our Custom Forge page. We can forge any chirra count from 1 to 5 (and beyond, if you really want — we've forged 7-chirra commissions), in any traditional Nepali pattern (Bhojpure, Sirupate, Angkhola, Chitlange, Chainpure), in any blade length, with any handle material. Each custom commission gets a quote, design refinement, photos for approval, and the 30-day refund guarantee.

What does "Angkhola" mean and how does it relate to chirra?

"Ang" means body and "khola" means groove. Angkhola describes a kukri with a body groove — a single fuller running along the blade. Angkhola is the most traditional single-chirra (Ek Chirra) configuration in Nepali kukri craft. The Angkhola Guardian and Trinity Angkhola in this collection are examples — single deep fuller forged into the blade body.

Are the chirras decorative or functional?

Both, but primarily functional. Chirras evolved as a structural-engineering solution to making a heavy chopping blade lighter and better-balanced without losing strength — the same I-beam principle used in modern construction. The aesthetic appeal is real, but it's a side benefit. A properly forged chirra blade performs measurably better than a flat-back blade of equal dimensions: lighter to carry, better balanced, less wrist fatigue, more rigidity at the cut.

How long does delivery take?

Forging takes 5–7 days (chirra blades take slightly longer than flat-back blades because each fuller has to be forged in by hand), then 5–7 days for express shipping — about 10–14 days door to door. UK, USA, Australia, Canada, Germany, and most of the EU have established DDP routes with duties paid upfront.

Why buy from Everest Forge instead of a marketplace?

Most "fullered kukris" on online marketplaces have machine-ground fullers, not forged-in chirras. The look is similar but the structural integrity isn't. Buying direct from us means the chirras are forged-in by hand by Kami caste blacksmiths in Kathmandu. Owner Deepak Sunar runs the workshop personally. Customisation available, photo approval before shipping, 30-day refund. No marketplace fee inflating the price.
