How the Rambo Knife Builder Works
A film knife is usually sold exactly one way: the way the prop looked. That is the whole point of a licensed replica. It is less useful if you want a hand-forged Rambo knife you will carry into a wood pile, or a piece to hand to someone with their name cut into the steel.
The builder takes the same forged blade and hands you every decision around it. Pick a finish and the blade changes on screen. Pick buffalo horn instead of rosewood and the grip changes. Pick copper fittings, a green scabbard and an engraving on the scabbard rather than the blade, and you see the finished knife before you commit a rupee. What you approve is what reaches the forge floor as a build sheet.

Rambo Part II-Inspired Bowie — the one that looks like the poster
Seventeen inches overall, 11.5 inches of clip-point Bowie blade, 950 grams, on a leather-wrapped steel grip. The biggest and most cinematic of the four, and the one that carries a wall. The handle wrap and the scabbard each come in six leather colours: match them for the film look, or contrast them for something no replica shelf carries.

Rambo III-Inspired Bowie — the one most people picture
Twelve inches of broad Bowie blade with a deep upswept clip point, 18 inches overall at 929 grams. Say "Rambo knife" without naming a film and this is the shape in people's heads. It offers the widest choice of grips of the Bowies — rosewood, whitewood, horn, bone or leather — with fittings in four metals including black.

Rambo IV-Inspired Cleaver — the one that actually chops
A broad, forward-weighted cleaver: 13 inches of blade, 19 inches overall, 1,100 grams. The heaviest hand-forged Rambo knife we make and easily the most useful outdoors, because the mass sits ahead of your hand and drives through green wood where a thinner blade bounces off it. Rambo V-Inspired Combat Knife — the one you can carry
Ten inches of blade, 15.5 inches overall, 651 grams, and a plain modern profile with nothing decorative about it. The smallest and lightest of the four, the easiest to live with, and the only one that fits a standard knife stand. Choose a black blade, black fittings and a black scabbard for the most tactical build in the range.

Blade finish
Satin is the easy all-round choice: an even brushed grain that hides ordinary handling. Black coated is matte black on the flats with a bright edge — the most rust-resistant and the least reflective outdoors. Acid wash gives a mottled stonewashed grey that hides scratches better than anything else here. Raw forge leaves the dark fire scale and hammer texture straight from the anvil, which is the most obviously hand-forged of the five. Polished is the brightest and the best for display, and it shows every mark a working knife collects.
Grip material
Rosewood is our standard everywhere: dense, dark and stable in the wet. Whitewood is the pale timber and gives the strongest contrast against a dark blade. Buffalo horn is glossy black and takes a deep polish, though it prefers to stay out of dry heated rooms. Bone is near-ivory and the most collector-facing. Leather, on the Part II and the III, is the surest grip in a wet hand and can be re-wrapped when it wears. The III and the IV also pair two materials in one grip.
Fittings and scabbard
The fittings come in silver-tone, brass, copper and, on three of the four knives, black. Brass and copper soften into a patina with handling, silver-tone stays bright longest, and black disappears against a coated blade. Every scabbard is hand-stitched leather in six colours: black and brown for the film-accurate look, red, green, blue and white for a build that is clearly your own.
The Best Part: Engraving You Can See Before It Is Cut
All four hand-forged Rambo knives carry a personalisation field, a file upload for a crest or a photograph, and a third choice most sellers never offer: where the engraving goes. On the blade, or on the scabbard, previewed either way before you order.
That choice matters more than it sounds. Engraving on the blade is read every time the knife is drawn, and the broad flat of the IV cleaver is the largest canvas in the range for a detailed crest or a long inscription. Engraving on the scabbard leaves the steel plain, which most collectors prefer, and it keeps a memorial or retirement knife usable without wearing the inscription away on a sharpening stone. Either way you see the placement first — engraving does not come off.
What We Changed From the Film Designs
No hollow handles. The first two film knives stored a survival kit in the grip under a compass. It was a fine idea in 1982 and it is the weakest point on a big knife the moment you start batoning with it. Ours are full tang, with the 5160 steel running unbroken from point to butt.
No sawbacks. Serrated spines look the part and saw wood badly, and they leave stress risers along the back of the blade exactly where a chopper takes the most shock. If you want one anyway, we will cut it through custom forge.
5160 spring steel, not stainless. The steel used in vehicle leaf springs: tough, forgiving of impact, and it takes a real working edge. It will also surface-rust if you leave it wet, which is the trade every carbon-steel owner makes knowingly.
Which Hand-Forged Rambo Knife Should You Build?
For a wall or a cabinet: the Part II. Seventeen inches carries a room.
For one knife that does most things: the III. The clip point handles skinning and carving that a cleaver never will.
For camp and wood: the IV. It replaces a knife and a small hatchet in one tool.
For something you will actually carry: the V. At 651 grams it disappears on a belt.
For a gift: any of them, with the engraving on the scabbard and the leather matched to something that means something. That is the point where it stops being a film knife and starts being theirs.

Who designed the original film knives?
Jimmy Lile designed the knives for the first two films; Gil Hibben designed every one after that — the third film's Bowie, the fourth film's cleaver and the compact blade from the fifth. Our history of the Rambo knife covers the sequence in detail.
How long does a configured knife take?
About two to three weeks in total. Every piece is prepared at the forge in seven to ten days, and shipping adds a further seven to ten days. Orders to the USA and Canada travel with FedEx; everywhere else ships on a DDP service, so duties and taxes are settled before the parcel moves and there is nothing to pay on delivery.
Does choosing more options cost more?
Some do and most do not. Polished and acid wash finishes carry a small surcharge, as do the premium grips and the two-material combinations; the fittings and the scabbard colours do not. The price on screen updates as you build, so there are no surprises at checkout.
Are they sharp, and can I get one blunt?
Every blade ships sharpened and ready to use. For cosplay, stage work or countries that restrict sharpened blades, add "Stage combat build — rebated edge, rounded tip." in the order note and we will build it that way. Our stage combat standard explains what changes.
Can I import a large fixed blade into my country?
That depends where you live, and owning a knife and carrying it in public are two separate legal questions in most places. The V is the smallest of the four and the least likely to hit a length limit; the Part II and the IV are the largest. Check your own rules before ordering, or contact us if you are unsure.
Will the steel rust?
If you neglect it, yes. 5160 is a high-carbon spring steel, not stainless. Wipe the blade dry after use, keep a light film of oil on it and do not store it in the leather scabbard for months. The black coated and acid wash finishes reduce the upkeep considerably.
Can I order a different blade length?
Not through the builders, which keep each blade at its standard length. Any other length, a sawback, a hollow handle or a design of your own goes through our custom forge service, where we quote your build individually.
