Javelin Spear — Hand-Forged Short Throwing Spear in 5160 Steel

The Everest Forge Javelin Spear is a compact, hand-forged throwing spear built for real use and made to be kept. The broad, bright leaf-point blade runs to a clean thrusting tip with a shallow fuller ground down its centre — a groove that lightens the blade and helps it sit true in the hand. It is mounted on a slim, pinned rosewood handle with a sculpted rosewood pommel, and comes complete with a hand-stitched leather scabbard. Forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck springs, water-tempered, and full-tang from point to pommel, it is a genuine working spear, not a wall-hanger.

At 25 inches overall it is a true short spear — light, fast, and balanced for throwing practice and close-range field work, yet handsome enough to live on a collector's wall. The javelin is the oldest throwing weapon there is, and this is a modern, hand-forged take on that idea: a short spear you can actually throw, handle, and trust. Like the rest of our work, it is forged to your spec — choose your blade length, finish, handle wood, and scabbard colour, with free engraving, all included.

Honest note: This is a 25-inch short hand spear, not a six-foot pole spear on a full shaft. It is built for throwing, thrusting, field use, and display. Always throw only in a safe, controlled, legal setting. If you want a full-length pole version, we forge those as a custom build.

A Real Working Throwing Spear

This is forged the same way as our working blades: a bar of 5160 spring steel hammered to shape by hand, water-tempered so the edge runs hard while the spine stays springy, and full-tang so the steel runs unbroken through the handle. The broad leaf head gives it a strong point and a real cutting edge, while the ground fuller down the centre trims weight without weakening the blade — so it stays light and balanced in the hand.

That balance is what makes it a true throwing spear. The compact 25-inch length and forward-set point let it leave the hand cleanly and fly true, and the full-tang rosewood handle takes the shock of repeated throws and recoveries. It handles real work beyond the throw, too — thrusting and close-range field use, bushcraft and camp tasks, and serious handling — while still being handsome enough to display. If you want a throwing spear you can actually use rather than a fragile replica, this is built for it.

The Javelin — The Oldest Throwing Weapon

Long before the bow, the javelin was how hunters and warriors reached a target at distance. A balanced spear thrown by hand fed early people and decided early battles, from the hunting grounds of the Stone Age to the light javelins of Greek and Roman skirmishers. The principle never changed: a point, a shaft, and the balance to make it fly.

Our Javelin Spear is a modern, compact tribute to that idea — an original Everest Forge design rather than a copy of any single historical piece. It keeps the clean leaf head and honest forged construction of a real throwing spear, scaled into a handy short spear you can carry, throw, use, and display. It is built for the thrower and the collector alike.

Why Throwers & Collectors Choose This Spear

It is real forged steel, built to work. Full-tang 5160 spring steel, water-tempered and sharpened — genuine weight, a real edge, and the toughness for repeated throwing and field use.

It is balanced for the throw. The compact length, broad forward point, and fullered blade give it the balance a throwing spear needs to leave the hand cleanly and fly true.

It arrives complete. Forged blade, pinned rosewood handle with sculpted pommel, and a fitted leather scabbard — not a bare head or a parts kit. Ready to use or display out of the box.

Total customisation is included, not upsold. Blade length, four finishes, two handle woods, six scabbard colours, and free engraving — all part of the standard build.

It is compact and easy to live with. At 25 inches it carries, stores, ships, and handles far more easily than a full pole spear, while keeping the capability of a real one.

Who This Javelin Spear Is For

Spear-throwing and skill hobbyists — anyone who wants a real, balanced short spear for throwing practice in a safe, controlled, legal setting.

Hunters and outdoorsmen — a tough, full-tang short spear for close-range field use and camp tasks where a spear is legal and appropriate.

Bushcraft and survival enthusiasts — a compact 5160 spear that earns its place in a serious kit.

Spear and blade collectors — a clean, real-steel throwing spear with a rosewood handle and fullered blade, made to be displayed and handled.

Reenactors and history enthusiasts — a hand-forged tribute to the javelin, the oldest throwing weapon. (Live steel is not intended for contact combat — see the FAQ.)

Gift buyers — free engraving turns it into a personalised gift for the outdoorsman, thrower, or collector who has everything.

How It's Made

01

Steel Selection

We start with 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — tough, springy, and proven for impact.

02

Hand Forging

The bar is heated and hammered to shape by hand, drawing out the leaf blade and aligning the grain for strength.

03

Heat Treatment

The blade is water-tempered to set a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible spine that absorbs the shock of throwing.

04

Hand Finishing

The fuller is ground, your chosen finish is applied, the rosewood handle and pommel are fitted, and a leather scabbard is stitched to match.

Care & Maintenance

After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil).

Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard. Display stand or wall mount recommended.

Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.

Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Handle care: Treat the rosewood occasionally with a little wood oil to keep it from drying out. After throwing, check the handle and pins for any wear.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a real, functional throwing spear?

Yes. It is individually hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon steel, water-tempered, full-tang, and sharpened — a genuine working short spear, not a cast or stainless display replica. It is balanced for throwing and built to take the shock of repeated throws and recoveries, as well as close-range field use.

What is the groove down the centre of the blade?

That is a fuller — a shallow groove ground into the solid steel, not a cut-through opening. It removes a little weight from the centre of the blade and helps the balance, while the blade stays full and strong on either side of it. It is a traditional working-blade feature, not just decoration.

Can I actually throw it, and how should I do it safely?

Yes — it is balanced and built for throwing. Always throw only in a safe, controlled, legal setting, into an appropriate target, with a clear range and no people or animals downrange. As live steel, it is meant for real use, throwing practice, field use, display, and collection rather than contact combat.

Is it a full-length pole spear?

No. This is a 25-inch short hand spear with a 16-inch handle, not a six-foot pole spear on a full shaft. The compact size is what makes it throwable and easy to carry, store, and ship. If you want a full-length pole version, request it as a custom build and we will forge to your specification.

How customisable is it?

Highly. You can choose your blade length (9-inch standard, with 10-inch, 12-inch, and 14-inch options), four blade finishes, two handle woods, and six scabbard colours, plus add free engraving or upload your own logo or artwork. Every standard option is included in the price.

What steel is it made from, and is it durable?

It is forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — a steel prized for toughness, flexibility, and edge retention. It is water-tempered for a hard edge over a springy spine, and the full-tang construction keeps the blade locked solidly through the handle for genuine working strength.

Is the blade sharpened, and can I get it unsharpened?

It ships hand-sharpened and ready to use. If you would prefer a display, unsharpened edge that is safer for a home or office display, note it in your order or message us before we forge and we will finish it that way at no extra charge.

How is this different from your Boar Spear?

The Javelin Spear is lighter and built around the throw, with an all-rosewood handle and a fullered leaf blade. The Boar Spear is a broader, brass-bolstered hunting spear built around close-range cut-and-thrust. Both are real hand-forged short spears — choose the Javelin if throwing balance is your priority, the Boar if you want maximum cutting head.

Can I have my name, a logo, or a photo engraved on it?

Yes. Free engraving of a name, initials, date, or short message is included, and you can also upload a logo, monogram, or artwork for custom photo and logo engraving on the blade. It is a popular way to personalise a kit piece or create a unique gift.

How long does it take to make and ship?

Each spear is hand-forged to order, with a production time of about 3 to 5 business days. It then ships worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking, typically 5 to 10 business days in transit, roughly 8 to 15 business days from order to delivery.

Do you ship to my country, and what about customs?

We ship worldwide from Nepal with fully tracked, insured delivery. International orders may be subject to customs duties or import taxes set by your own country's customs authority, paid separately by you on delivery. Please also check that owning this type of blade is permitted where you live before ordering.

What is your return and warranty policy?

Standard configurations carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition. Custom configurations such as custom length, finish, handle wood, or engraving are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Every spear is backed by a 6-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship.
