Norseman Spear — Hand-Forged Viking War Spear with Guard & Pommel

The Everest Forge Norseman Spear is our most sword-like spear — a hand-forged Viking war spear with a broad leaf blade, a full steel guard, a Norseman pommel, and a leather-wrapped grip. Where most spears end the blade in a plain socket, the Norseman carries a proper cross guard at the base of the blade and a shaped Norseman pommel at the butt, the same pommel identity as our Norseman Viking Sword. The result is a spear with real sword DNA: broad enough to cut, pointed enough to thrust, and finished like a fighting blade rather than a farm tool. Forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck springs, water-tempered, and full-tang from point to pommel, it is genuine, battle-ready steel.

This is the spear for someone who wants more than a spearhead on a stick. The guard gives the hand protection and a hand-stop you simply do not get on an ordinary spear, the long leather-wrapped grip is secure and comfortable in any weather, and the broad blade and Norse styling give it the presence of a chieftain's weapon. It is built for Viking and medieval enthusiasts, serious collectors, reenactors, and anyone who appreciates a fully finished war spear. Like the rest of our work, it is forged to your spec — four blade lengths, four finishes, six grip-wrap colours, six scabbard colours, and free engraving, all included.

Note: The Norseman Spear is an original Everest Forge design inspired by Norse warrior culture. It is a 32-inch hand spear, not a six-foot pole spear on a full shaft; if you want a full-length pole version, we forge those as a custom build.

Sword-Grade: The Guard, Pommel & Grip

What sets the Norseman apart from every other spear we make is how it is finished. A full steel guard sits at the base of the blade, giving your hand real protection and a positive stop — something a plain spear socket cannot offer, and a feature borrowed straight from sword-making. At the other end, a shaped Norseman pommel caps the handle, balancing the blade and tying the spear visually to our Norseman Viking Sword. In between, the long rosewood handle is wrapped in genuine leather for a secure, comfortable grip in any conditions.

Together, the guard, pommel, and wrapped grip turn this from a spearhead-on-a-stick into a properly finished fighting piece — a spear built and detailed like a sword. It is the choice for someone who wants their spear to feel and look like a warrior's weapon, not a tool.

Norse War Heritage

The spear, not the sword, was the true weapon of the Norse warrior — carried by everyone from farmer to jarl, used in the shield wall, in the hunt, and in single combat. It was the weapon of Odin himself, whose spear Gungnir never missed its mark. A well-made spear was a mark of standing as much as a tool of war.

The Norseman Spear is a modern, hand-forged tribute to that tradition — an original Everest Forge design rather than a copy of any single historical piece. It blends the broad, business-like blade of a Norse war spear with the guard, pommel, and wrapped grip of a fine sword, giving you a piece worthy of a chieftain's hall as well as honest use.

Why Collectors & Reenactors Choose This Spear

It is finished like a sword. A full steel guard and a shaped Norseman pommel — sword-grade details you will not find on an ordinary spear.

The grip is built for use. A long rosewood handle wrapped in genuine leather gives a secure, comfortable hold in any weather, in six colour options.

It is real forged steel. Full-tang 5160 spring steel, water-tempered and sharpened — genuine weight, a real edge, and battle-ready strength.

It matches our Norseman Sword. The shared Norseman pommel makes it a natural companion piece for collectors who want a coordinated Norse set.

Total customisation is included, not upsold. Four blade lengths, four finishes, six grip-wrap colours, six scabbard colours, and free engraving — all part of the standard build.

How It's Made

01

Steel Selection

We start with 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — tough, springy, and proven for impact.

02

Hand Forging

The bar is heated and hammered to shape by hand, drawing out the broad leaf blade and aligning the grain for strength.

03

Heat Treatment

The blade is water-tempered to set a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible spine that absorbs shock instead of snapping.

04

Guard, Pommel & Wrap

The steel guard and Norseman pommel are fitted, your finish is applied, the handle is wrapped in leather, and a leather scabbard is stitched to match.

Care & Maintenance

After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil), and wipe down the steel guard and pommel.

Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard. Display stand or wall mount recommended.

Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.

Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Leather grip & scabbard: Keep dry and treat occasionally with leather conditioner to prevent drying or cracking.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes the Norseman Spear different from an ordinary spear?

It is finished like a sword rather than a plain spear. It has a full steel guard at the base of the blade for hand protection, a shaped Norseman pommel at the butt, and a leather-wrapped grip — details borrowed from fine sword-making that you will not find on a simple spearhead-and-socket. Underneath, it is the same real forged 5160 steel, full-tang and water-tempered, as the rest of our spears.

What is the guard for?

The full steel cross guard sits where the blade meets the handle. It protects your hand, gives a positive stop so your grip cannot slide up onto the blade, and adds to the sword-like balance and look of the spear. It is a genuine functional feature, not just decoration.

What is a Norseman pommel, and does it match your sword?

The Norseman pommel is the shaped steel cap at the butt of the handle. It balances the blade and finishes the spear like a sword. It shares its identity with our Norseman Viking Sword, so the two make a natural matched pair for collectors who want a coordinated Norse set.

How is this different from your standard Viking Spear?

Our Viking Spear is the classic broad-leaf Norse war spear with a traditional rosewood handle. The Norseman Spear is the premium, sword-grade version — same Norse spirit, but finished with a steel guard, a Norseman pommel, and a leather-wrapped grip. Choose the Viking Spear for the traditional look, or the Norseman if you want a spear detailed like a fighting sword.

Is the handle really wrapped in leather?

Yes. The 22-inch rosewood handle is wrapped in genuine leather for a secure, comfortable grip that holds up in any weather. You can choose the wrap colour from six options — black, brown, red, yellow, green, or blue — to match or contrast your scabbard.

Is it functional, or just for display?

It is fully functional. The full-tang, water-tempered 5160 construction and sharpened blade are built for real use such as thrusting and reach practice and serious handling, as well as display. The guard makes it especially comfortable and safe to grip in use.

What steel is it made from, and is it durable?

It is forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — a steel prized for toughness, flexibility, and edge retention. It is water-tempered for a hard edge over a springy spine, and the full-tang construction runs the steel solidly from the point through to the pommel for genuine battle-ready strength.

Is the blade sharpened, and can I get it unsharpened?

It ships hand-sharpened and ready to use. If you would prefer a display, unsharpened edge that is safer for a home or office display, note it in your order or message us before we forge and we will finish it that way at no extra charge.

Can I use this for LARP or contact stage combat?

This is live steel, intended for real functional use, display, collection, and reenactment posing rather than contact combat. Most LARP and contact-combat events require foam or blunted safety weapons and will not allow sharpened steel. If you want a piece purely for safe handling, ask us about a fully blunted display edge.

Can I have runes, my name, a logo, or a photo engraved on it?

Yes. Free engraving of a name, initials, runes, date, or short message is included, and you can also upload a logo, sigil, or artwork for custom photo and logo engraving on the blade. It is a popular way to personalise a Norse kit or create a unique gift.

How long does it take to make and ship?

Each spear is hand-forged to order, with a production time of about 3 to 5 business days. It then ships worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking, typically 5 to 10 business days in transit, roughly 8 to 15 business days from order to delivery.

What is your return and warranty policy?

Standard configurations carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition. Custom configurations such as custom length, finish, grip-wrap colour, or engraving are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Every spear is backed by a 6-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship.
