Leaf Spear — 8-Inch Hand-Forged Hunting & Collector Spear with Leather-Wrapped Rosewood Handle

The Everest Forge 8-inch Leaf Spear is our bestselling spear — a hand-forged hunting and collector blade built in Kathmandu from 5160 high carbon spring steel sourced from recycled vehicle leaf springs. The classic leaf-shaped blade, sharpened to a working edge, mounted on a 20-inch full-tang rosewood handle wrapped in genuine leather, and shipped with a handcrafted leather scabbard. Total length 28 inches, total weight 990 grams — serious heft, ideal balance, ready for hunting, throwing, training, or display.

This is the spear pattern that built civilisations. The leaf-shaped blade is one of the oldest and most effective spear designs in human history — used from ancient Greece to medieval Europe to the Indian subcontinent for the same reason: it cuts on the way in AND on the way out, and the broad belly geometry gives it unmatched stopping power. Hand-forged from real spring steel, water-tempered, and finished with the kind of leather-wrapped handle that ancient warriors actually carried.

Note: Slight variations in weight, dimensions, or finish may occur due to the handmade nature of the item.

Why The 8-Inch Leaf Spear Is Our Bestseller

The leaf shape works. The leaf-blade spear is one of the oldest weapon designs in human history because the geometry simply works. The broad belly delivers cutting power on the thrust. The symmetrical double edge means you cut on the entry AND the withdrawal. The pointed tip penetrates armour, hide, or game with minimal effort. Roman, Greek, Celtic, Viking, and South Asian cultures independently arrived at this same blade shape because it is the most effective spear geometry ever devised.

Real spring steel. 5160 high carbon spring steel is what professional knife makers and bladesmiths choose for combat-grade blades. The same steel used in heavy-duty vehicle leaf springs, chosen for shock resistance, edge retention, and toughness. Differentially heat-treated and water-tempered for a hardened edge with a tougher, flexible spine — will not shatter or chip from impact.

Full-tang for life. The steel runs the full 28-inch length of the spear — through both the blade AND the entire handle. The rosewood handle is fitted to the steel, then wrapped in genuine leather for grip. There is no socket fitting, no welded joint, no glue. The blade will never separate from the handle.

Optimal weight and length. At 990 grams and 28 inches total, this spear hits the sweet spot for one-handed use. Heavy enough to deliver real impact. Light enough to maneuver, throw, or carry. Long enough for distance. Short enough for close work. The 8-inch blade size is what your fellow customers consistently choose — the bestseller for a reason.

Hand-forged in Nepal. No machine production. No mass-stamped steel. Forged blade-by-blade by Nepalese master smiths whose families have forged spears for generations. See the full forging process on The Making page.

The Leaf Spear — A Brief History

The leaf-shaped spear is one of the oldest and most successful blade designs in human history. Bronze-age spears from Mycenaean Greece, Iron-age Celtic spears from Gaul and Britain, Roman auxiliary spears, Viking-era throwing spears, medieval European war spears, and traditional hunting spears across Asia and Africa — all share the same broad-bellied leaf-shaped blade. The geometry was discovered independently by metalworking cultures across the world because it simply works better than alternative shapes.

The leaf spear excels at two tasks: penetrating thrusts (the broad blade with a sharp point drives deep into the target with minimal effort) and cutting on withdrawal (the symmetrical double-edge slices coming out as well as going in). For hunting, this means clean kills. For warfare, it means wounds that bleed continuously. For throwing, the weight distribution toward the tip provides accurate flight and deep impact.

Famous historical leaf spears include the Greek doru carried by hoplites at Marathon and Thermopylae, the Roman hasta carried by early legions, the Celtic war spear depicted in La Tène art, and the Viking spjut wielded in the longship raids. Our 8-inch Leaf Spear honours this lineage with traditional 5160 spring steel, hand-forging, and leather-wrapped rosewood — the same materials and methods our ancestors used 2,500 years ago.

Care & Maintenance

After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil).

Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard, as leather can hold moisture against the steel.

Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.

Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Handle care: Condition the leather wrap occasionally with leather conditioner or saddle soap. Condition rosewood beneath the wrap with linseed or tung oil if exposed.

Frequently Asked Questions

What blade length should I order?

The default 8-inch blade is our bestseller and the most popular choice for hunting, throwing, and display use. The 8" gives you ideal balance and weight distribution at 990g total. 10-inch (+$35) adds reach without much weight penalty. 12-inch (+$45) is the size most buyers choose for serious throwing or hunting (the next-bestselling length). 14" (+$60) and 16" (+$80) are for collectors and reenactors wanting maximum blade presence. If unsure, the 8-inch is the safest choice.

What is special about the leaf-shape blade?

The leaf shape is the most-used spear blade design in human history. The broad belly geometry delivers exceptional thrusting force, the symmetrical double-edge cuts on entry AND withdrawal, and the pointed tip penetrates with minimal effort. Greek, Roman, Celtic, Viking, Anglo-Saxon, and Asian cultures all independently arrived at this same shape because the geometry works.

Can I get this engraved?

Yes. Standard engraving including names, dates, mottos, regimental crests, family crests, and custom logos is included at no extra charge. You can also upload a custom logo or photo for engraving. Bespoke ceremonial engraving with gold or silver inlay is available as a premium service. Full details on our Personalized Blades page.

Is this spear sharpened and ready to use?

Yes. Forged from 5160 high carbon spring steel, water-tempered, full-tang construction, and sharpened to a working edge ready for hunting, throwing, or training use. For HEMA sparring, stage combat, or contact training, request a blunt training-edge version at no extra charge.

Can I use this spear for hunting?

Yes — this is a real working spear, not a display replica. The 8-inch leaf blade with 990g weight is well-suited for boar hunting, spearfishing, and other traditional hunting where legal in your jurisdiction. The double-edge leaf shape provides cuts on both entry and withdrawal for clean kills. Verify hunting legality in your area before use.

Is the spear good for throwing?

Yes. Many of our customers use this exact spear for throwing practice. The 990g weight and tip-forward balance are well-suited to throwing distances. The 12-inch blade option is even more popular among serious throwing-spear buyers due to slightly heavier tip momentum. The full-tang construction means the spear will not break if it lands awkwardly.

How does the leather-wrapped handle hold up over time?

Excellent. Leather wraps have been used on handle grips for over 2,000 years because they provide secure grip when wet, absorb shock, and age beautifully. Condition the leather occasionally with leather conditioner or saddle soap. The leather will darken and develop character with use — this is desirable patina, not damage. Underneath the leather, the rosewood handle is sealed and protected for life.

Will I have to pay customs duties?

International orders may incur customs duties, VAT, GST, or import taxes charged by your country's customs authority on arrival. These are not included in your order total — they are paid directly by you on delivery. Amount depends on your country's rules.

How long until I receive my order?

Total typical timeline 8–15 business days. Forging and finishing in our Kathmandu workshop takes 3–5 business days. DHL Express or FedEx International delivery takes another 5–10 business days depending on country. Custom configurations may take longer.

Do you ship spears to my country?

We ship to most countries worldwide via DHL Express and FedEx International. Some countries restrict the import of spears or pole weapons. Australia, the UK, and parts of the EU have specific rules. Contact us if unsure about your country's import laws before ordering.

Is the leaf spear legal to own?

In most countries it is legal to own a spear for hunting, collection, training, or display. Carrying a spear in public is more strictly regulated. It is the buyer's responsibility to verify local laws before ordering. We do not give legal advice for specific jurisdictions.
