Boar Spear — Hand-Forged Short Hunting Spear in 5160 Steel

The Everest Forge Boar Spear is a compact, hand-forged hunting spear built for real use and made to be kept. The broad, leaf-shaped blade swells wide for cutting and tapers to a strong thrusting point — the classic boar-spear profile that cuts and thrusts with equal capability — finished with fine etched line-work that follows the leaf. It sits on a brass bolster and a leather-wrapped handle, and comes complete with a hand-stitched leather scabbard. Forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck springs, water-tempered, and full-tang from point to pommel, it is a genuine working spear, not a wall-hanger.

At 24 inches overall it is a true short spear — handy, fast, and controllable, equally at home in the field, at camp, or on a collector's wall. For centuries the boar spear was the hunting tool of choice across Europe, prized for stopping power at close range; this is a modern, compact, hand-forged take on that heritage. And like the rest of our work, it is forged to your spec — choose your blade length, finish, handle-wrap colour, and scabbard colour, with free engraving, all included.

Honest note: This is a 24-inch short hand spear, not a six- to eight-foot boar pole on a full ash shaft. It is built for thrusting, handling, field use, and display. If you want a full-length mounted pole version, we forge those as a custom build.

A Real Working Short Spear

This is forged the same way as our working blades: a bar of 5160 spring steel hammered to shape by hand, water-tempered so the edge runs hard while the spine stays springy, and full-tang so the steel runs unbroken through the handle. The broad leaf blade gives it a wide, deep cut as well as a strong thrust, and the compact 24-inch length makes it fast and easy to control in close.

The brass bolster and leather-wrapped grip are not just for looks — the brass adds balance toward the hand and the leather gives a secure, comfortable hold in any weather. It handles real work: thrusting and close-range field use, bushcraft and camp tasks, and serious handling — while still being handsome enough to display. If you want a hunting spear you can actually use rather than a fragile replica, this is built for it.

The Boar Spear — A Hunter's Heritage

The boar spear earned its name in the deep forests of medieval and Renaissance Europe, where it was the hunting tool of choice for the most dangerous close-range game. Its broad, leaf-shaped head was made to deliver a decisive cut-and-thrust wound and to stop a charging animal at arm's length, which is why hunters trusted it where a knife was too short and a sword too unwieldy.

Our Boar Spear is a modern, compact tribute to that tradition — an original Everest Forge interpretation rather than a copy of any single historical piece. It keeps the broad cutting head and honest forged construction of the classic boar spear, scaled into a handy short spear you can carry, use, and display. Historically, boar spears came in many forms, both with and without crossbars; this one keeps the clean broad-leaf profile and lets the steel do the talking.

Why Hunters & Collectors Choose This Spear

It is real forged steel, built to work. Full-tang 5160 spring steel, water-tempered and sharpened — genuine weight, a real edge, and the toughness for actual field use.

It arrives complete. Forged blade, brass bolster, leather-wrapped handle, and a fitted leather scabbard — not a bare head or a "pole not included" kit. Ready to use or display out of the box.

The broad boar-spear blade does real work. The wide leaf cuts and thrusts in equal measure, the classic profile prized for close-range hunting and now for collecting.

Total customisation is included, not upsold. Blade length, four finishes, six handle-wrap colours, six scabbard colours, and free engraving — all part of the standard build.

It is compact and easy to live with. At 24 inches it carries, stores, ships, and handles far more easily than a six-foot boar pole, while keeping the look and capability of the real thing.

How It's Made

01

Steel Selection

We start with 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — tough, springy, and proven for impact.

02

Hand Forging

The bar is heated and hammered to shape by hand, drawing out the broad leaf blade and aligning the grain for strength.

03

Heat Treatment

The blade is water-tempered to set a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible spine that absorbs shock instead of snapping.

04

Hand Finishing

Your chosen finish and the etched line-work are applied, the brass bolster and leather-wrapped handle are fitted, and a leather scabbard is stitched to match.

Care & Maintenance

After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil).

Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard. Display stand or wall mount recommended.

Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.

Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Handle & brass care: Condition the leather wrap occasionally, and buff the brass bolster with a little metal polish to keep its shine.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a real, functional hunting spear?

Yes. It is individually hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon steel, water-tempered, full-tang, and sharpened — a genuine working short spear, not a cast or stainless display replica. The broad leaf blade cuts and thrusts, and the full-tang build is made to take real field use.

What makes it a "boar spear"?

The boar spear is defined by its broad, leaf-shaped cut-and-thrust head, the form historically used to hunt dangerous close-range game in medieval and Renaissance Europe. This spear keeps that classic broad-leaf profile in a compact, modern, hand-forged build. It is an original Everest Forge interpretation rather than a replica of one specific historical piece.

Is it a full-length pole spear?

No. This is a 24-inch short hand spear with a 16-inch handle, not a six- to eight-foot boar pole on a full ash shaft. The compact size makes it easy to carry, handle, store, and ship. If you want a full-length mounted pole version, request it as a custom build and we will forge to your specification.

How customisable is it?

Highly. You can choose your blade length (8-inch standard, with 10-inch and 12-inch options), four blade finishes, six handle-wrap leather colours, and six scabbard colours, plus add free engraving or upload your own logo or artwork. Every standard option is included in the price.

What is the line-work on the blade?

The blade carries fine etched line-work that follows the leaf profile, a decorative detail applied by hand. Because each spear is finished individually, the etching varies slightly from piece to piece, so yours will be subtly unique.

What steel is it made from, and is it durable?

It is forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — a steel prized for toughness, flexibility, and edge retention. It is water-tempered for a hard edge over a springy spine, and the full-tang construction keeps the blade locked solidly through the handle for genuine working strength.

Is the blade sharpened, and can I get it unsharpened?

It ships hand-sharpened and ready to use. If you would prefer a display, unsharpened edge that is safer for a home or office display, note it in your order or message us before we forge and we will finish it that way at no extra charge.

Can I throw it, or use it for LARP or contact combat?

It is a balanced short spear that can be handled and thrown in a safe, controlled, legal setting, but it is live steel intended for real use, hunting, display, and collection rather than contact combat. Most LARP and contact-combat events require foam or blunted safety weapons and will not allow sharpened steel.

Can I have my name, a logo, or a photo engraved on it?

Yes. Free engraving of a name, initials, date, or short message is included, and you can also upload a logo, monogram, or artwork for custom photo and logo engraving on the blade. It is a popular way to personalise a hunting kit piece or create a unique gift.

How long does it take to make and ship?

Each spear is hand-forged to order, with a production time of about 3 to 5 business days. It then ships worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking, typically 5 to 10 business days in transit, roughly 8 to 15 business days from order to delivery.

Do you ship to my country, and what about customs?

We ship worldwide from Nepal with fully tracked, insured delivery. International orders may be subject to customs duties or import taxes set by your own country's customs authority, paid separately by you on delivery. Please also check that owning this type of blade is permitted where you live before ordering.

What is your return and warranty policy?

Standard configurations carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition. Custom configurations such as custom length, finish, handle-wrap colour, or engraving are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Every spear is backed by a 6-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship.
