Hand-Forged Lion-Head Knightly Sword — Full-Tang 5160 Blade with Floral Etched Detail

This is a hand-forged, fully functional knightly sword — a classic medieval arming sword forged in Nepal from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, full tang, oil-tempered, and sharpened to a true edge. It carries a straight double-edged blade in a bright polished finish with a floral scrollwork etch running its length, a gracefully curved steel cross-guard, a shaped horn grip, and a sculpted lion-head pommel, paired with a buckled black leather scabbard. Every sword is made to order in your chosen length, finish, and engraving.

The standard blade is 29 inches on a 9.5-inch handle, for an overall length around 38.5 inches at about 1.9 kg. The etched blade and lion pommel make it a genuine display centrepiece, while the forged 5160 steel and full tang make it a real sword you can handle — not a cast wall-hanger.

An honest note. This is an original hand-forged knightly sword, built as a real, functional blade and a collector's centrepiece. We frame it as the craft object it is rather than as an instrument of harm. What we care about is the steel, the etched blade, the lion pommel, and the balance.

What Is a Knightly Sword?

The knightly sword, or arming sword, is the classic single-handed straight sword of the European medieval knight — a double-edged blade with a cruciform cross-guard and a counterweight pommel, carried from roughly the 11th to the 15th centuries. It was the everyday sidearm of the armoured knight, balanced for both cut and thrust. This one is a modern hand-forged interpretation in 5160 spring steel, dressed with a floral scrollwork etch and a sculpted lion-head pommel — the lion being the oldest and most enduring heraldic symbol of courage and kingship in European arms.

How It Is Made

You set the spec — length, finish, etch, edge, and any engraving you want on the blade.
A smith forges the straight double-edged blade from a 5160 leaf-spring billet and grinds the bevels.
The blade is oil-tempered, polished bright, then the floral scrollwork is etched by hand.
We fit the curved guard and lion-head pommel, shape and fit the horn grip, build the leather scabbard, and ship worldwide tracked.

Shipping, Returns & Care

Shipping

In-stock specs dispatch within 2 to 3 business days; fully custom builds take roughly 4 to 6 weeks to forge before dispatch. We ship worldwide by DHL or FedEx in 7 to 14 business days, tracked. Import and blade laws vary by country, so please check your local rules before ordering.

Returns & Warranty

Every blade is backed by the Everest Forge warranty against forging and material defects. If something is wrong with your order, we will repair, replace, or refund it. Personalized and custom-engraved blades are made to order, so please confirm your spec carefully before purchase.

Care

Wipe the blade clean and dry after handling, and apply a light coat of oil before storage to protect the high-carbon steel from moisture. Oiling also keeps the etched detail crisp and free of spotting. Keep the horn grip and leather scabbard away from prolonged damp. With basic care, a 5160 blade will outlast its owner.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a knightly sword?

The knightly sword, or arming sword, is the classic single-handed straight sword of the European medieval knight — a double-edged blade with a cruciform cross-guard and a counterweight pommel, used from roughly the 11th to the 15th centuries. It was balanced for both cut and thrust. This one is a modern, hand-forged interpretation in 5160 spring steel.

Is this a real, functional sword?

Yes. This is a real, fully functional sword, not a cast display piece. It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, full tang, oil-tempered, and sharpened to a true edge before it ships. It is built to be handled, and finished richly enough to display as a centrepiece.

What steel is it, and is it oil-tempered?

The blade is forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, the same alloy used in heavy-duty truck leaf springs, prized for toughness and edge retention. It is oil-tempered for a hard edge backed by a flexible, shock-absorbent spine.

Is it full tang?

Yes. The tang runs the full length of the handle, so there is no rat-tail or glued-in tang to fail. Full-tang construction is what makes the sword strong enough to handle rather than just display.

What is the floral etching on the blade?

The blade carries a floral scrollwork pattern etched along its length against the polished steel. It is etched by hand rather than printed, so it has real depth and slight individual variation. You can request a different pattern through Custom Forge.

Why a lion-head pommel?

The lion is the oldest and most enduring heraldic symbol in European arms, standing for courage, nobility, and kingship, and lion motifs appear on sword fittings across the medieval period. Here it is sculpted as the pommel, where it also serves its practical purpose as the counterweight that balances the blade.

Can I change the blade length?

Yes. The standard blade is 29 inches, and you can order it shorter or longer to your spec. You can also choose the blade finish, the etch pattern, the edge, and add engraving. Every sword is forged to the spec you select, so the size is yours to set.

What is the handle made of?

The handle is shaped horn over a full tang, with a polished curved steel cross-guard and the sculpted lion-head pommel. Each hilt is shaped and fitted by hand, so the horn grain and colour vary slightly from piece to piece.

Does it come with a scabbard?

Yes. Every sword ships with a black leather scabbard with buckled fittings to protect the blade for storage and display. It is made by hand to fit the blade size you order.

Can I add a name or engraving?

Yes. You can add a name, initials, or a short message to the blade, and you can upload your own logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalized blades are forged to order, so please confirm the details before you buy.

Is it good for cosplay and display?

Yes. The etched blade and lion-head pommel make it a striking piece for medieval and fantasy cosplay, costume, photo shoots, and themed display. Choose the display-blunt edge option if you want it for safe handling on set.

Do you ship worldwide, and how long does it take?

Yes. We ship worldwide from Nepal by DHL or FedEx in 7 to 14 business days with tracking. In-stock specs dispatch within 2 to 3 business days; fully custom builds take roughly 4 to 6 weeks to forge first. Import and blade laws vary by country, so please check your local rules before ordering.
