Primal Spear — Hand-Forged Raw Hunting Spear in 5160 Steel

The Everest Forge Primal Spear is a hand-forged hunting spear with a raw, straight-from-the-anvil finish. The broad leaf blade is left in its hammered forge state — dark, textured steel still carrying the marks of the hammer — with only the cutting edge ground bright and sharp. That two-tone contrast of black hammered body against a polished edge is the whole character of the spear: rugged, honest, and unmistakably hand-made. It is built on a sturdy full-tang handle with pinned rosewood scales and a lanyard hole, and comes complete with a hand-stitched leather scabbard. Forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck springs and water-tempered, it is a real working spear with nothing hidden under polish.

This is the spear for people who love the look of the forge itself. Where our other spears are cleaned up to a smooth satin, the Primal wears its hammer texture with pride — the same raw aesthetic prized on high-end bushcraft and survival blades, here on a full hunting spear. It is made for bushcrafters and survivalists, hunters, and collectors who want something with real character rather than a factory shine. Like everything we make, it is forged to your spec — your blade length, finish, handle wood, and scabbard colour, with free engraving, all included.

Honest note: This is a 28-inch hand spear, not a six-foot pole spear on a full shaft. It is built for hunting, bushcraft and field use, thrusting, and display. If you want a full-length pole version, we forge those as a custom build.

The Raw Forge Finish

The look of the Primal Spear is no accident — it is the blade shown as it comes off the anvil. After the leaf blade is hammered to shape, the body is left in its raw forged state: dark fire-scale and the dimpled texture of the hammer blows are kept rather than ground away. Only the edge is taken down to bright, sharp steel. The result is a striking two-tone blade — black, living texture across the body against a clean polished edge.

It is the same aesthetic that sells high-end bushcraft and survival knives, where a hand-forged raw finish signals that a real smith made the blade by hand. Beyond the looks, leaving the forge finish keeps more material on the blade and means less grinding, so the steel stays strong. Every Primal Spear is finished slightly differently by the hammer, so no two are exactly alike.

A Real Working Spear with Character

Under the raw finish, the Primal is built like the rest of our working spears: a bar of 5160 spring steel forged by hand, water-tempered so the edge runs hard while the spine stays springy, and full-tang with pinned rosewood scales and a lanyard hole, knife-style, for a solid, reliable build. The broad leaf head gives a strong point and a real cutting edge, and at 1.2 kg it has the heft to back up serious thrusts and field work.

This is a spear to use, not just to look at — hunting where legal, bushcraft and camp tasks, thrusting and reach work, and hard outdoor handling. It just happens to look like it was forged a thousand years ago. As an original Everest Forge design at one of the most accessible prices in our spear range, it is an easy way to own a real, characterful, hand-forged spear.

Why Bushcrafters & Collectors Choose This Spear

The raw forge finish is the whole point. A dark hammered body with a bright edge — the look of a real, hand-forged blade, standard on every Primal.

It is genuine forged steel. Full-tang 5160 spring steel, water-tempered and sharpened — a working spear, not a cast or stainless display piece.

Every one is unique. The hammer texture is slightly different on each blade, so no two Primal Spears are exactly the same.

It is knife-built and tough. A full, exposed tang with pinned rosewood scales and a lanyard hole — simple, strong, and reliable in the field.

Total customisation is included, not upsold. Blade length, four finishes, two handle woods, six scabbard colours, and free engraving — all part of the standard build.

Who This Primal Spear Is For

Bushcrafters and survivalists — anyone who wants a rugged, raw-forged, full-tang spear that looks and works the part in the field.

Hunters and outdoorsmen — a substantial, broad-bladed spear for hunting where legal and hard outdoor use.

Lovers of the hand-forged look — collectors who prize hammer texture and raw forge finish over a factory shine.

Knife and blade collectors — a full-tang, scale-handled spear that handles like an oversized forged knife, with real character.

Reenactors and primitive-skills enthusiasts — a spear that looks genuinely ancient and hand-made. (Live steel is not intended for contact combat — see the FAQ.)

Gift buyers — free engraving turns it into a distinctive, affordable gift for the outdoorsman or maker in your life.

How It's Made

01

Steel Selection

We start with 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — tough, springy, and proven for impact.

02

Hand Forging

The bar is heated and hammered to shape by hand. The hammer texture left on the blade becomes the Primal's signature finish.

03

Heat Treatment

The blade is water-tempered to set a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible spine that absorbs shock instead of snapping.

04

Edge & Assembly

The body is left in its raw forge state, only the edge is ground bright and sharp, the rosewood scales are pinned to the tang, and a leather scabbard is stitched to match.

Care & Maintenance

Raw finish care: The dark forge finish is carbon steel and will develop a natural patina over time, which is normal and protective. Keep the blade dry and lightly oiled (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil).

After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry, paying attention to the bright edge, and re-oil.

Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard. Display stand or wall mount recommended.

Rust spots: Heavier rust on the bright edge can be eased back with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and oil; avoid scrubbing the raw forge body hard, as that is part of the finish.

Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the raw forge finish?

It is the blade left as it comes off the anvil. After forging, the dark fire-scale and hammer texture on the body of the blade are kept rather than ground smooth, and only the edge is taken to bright, sharp steel. That gives the Primal its striking two-tone look — a black hammered body against a polished edge — and means every one is finished a little differently.

Is the dark finish a coating or paint?

No. It is the natural forge finish of the steel itself — fire-scale and hammer texture from the forging process, not a coating or paint. Over time it will develop a deeper natural patina, which is normal for forged carbon steel and helps protect the blade.

Is this a real, functional spear?

Yes. Under the raw finish it is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon steel, water-tempered, full-tang, and sharpened — a genuine working spear. The raw look is purely aesthetic; the blade performs like the rest of our working spears.

Can I get it in a smooth or polished finish instead?

Yes. The raw forge finish is the standard look, but you can choose Satin, Polished / Mirror, or a uniform Blacked / Coated finish from the options at the top of the page if you prefer a cleaner appearance.

How is the handle built?

It is knife-style: a full, exposed tang with rosewood scales pinned to either side and a lanyard hole at the end. It is simple and very strong, with no hidden joints — the same construction used on heavy-duty bushcraft knives.

How is this different from your other hunting spears?

The Primal is defined by its raw, hammered forge finish and knife-style scale handle — it is the rugged, characterful one. The Boar and Ranger Spears have clean satin blades and round handles; the Survival Spear is larger. Choose the Primal if you want the hand-forged, straight-from-the-anvil look.

Is it a full-length pole spear?

No. This is a 28-inch hand spear with an 18-inch handle, not a six-foot pole spear on a full shaft. The compact size makes it easy to carry, handle, store, and ship. If you want a full-length pole version, request it as a custom build and we will forge to your specification.

How customisable is it?

Highly. You can choose your blade length (10-inch standard, with 12-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch options), four blade finishes, two handle woods, and six scabbard colours, plus add free engraving or upload your own logo or artwork. Every standard option is included in the price.

Is the blade sharpened, and can I get it unsharpened?

It ships hand-sharpened and ready to use. If you would prefer a display, unsharpened edge that is safer for a home or office display, note it in your order or message us before we forge and we will finish it that way at no extra charge.

Can I have my name, a logo, or a photo engraved on it?

Yes. Free engraving of a name, initials, date, or short message is included, and you can also upload a logo, monogram, or artwork for custom photo and logo engraving on the bright edge bevel. It is a popular way to personalise a kit piece or create a unique gift.

How long does it take to make and ship?

Each spear is hand-forged to order, with a production time of about 3 to 5 business days. It then ships worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking, typically 5 to 10 business days in transit, roughly 8 to 15 business days from order to delivery.

What is your return and warranty policy?

Standard configurations carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition. Custom configurations such as custom length, finish, handle wood, or engraving are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Every spear is backed by a 6-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship.
