Sword Spear — Hand-Forged Gladius-Style War Spear for Bushcraft, Hunting & Collection

The Everest Forge Sword Spear is exactly what the name says: a hand-forged blade that lives halfway between a short sword and a spear. The long, straight gladius-style blade tapers to a clipped piercing point and rides on a 20-inch solid-metal handle wrapped in riveted rosewood, finished with a steel collar and pommel. At a standard 37 inches overall it is a true reach weapon — long enough to thrust and keep distance, short enough to handle, carry, and ship anywhere. It comes complete with a hand-stitched leather scabbard and belt frog.

Every blade is hand-forged in Kathmandu, Nepal from 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs, water-tempered, and sharpened to a razor edge. Full-tang from point to pommel, this is a real, functional war spear built for bushcraft and camp work, thrusting and reach, hunting and dispatch where a short spear is legal, and a battle-ready centrepiece for any serious collection. And it is forged to your spec — six blade lengths, four finishes, two handle woods, six scabbard colours, and free engraving, all included.

Honest note: This is a 37-inch sword-spear (a long-blade reach weapon), not a six-foot pole-mounted boar spear with a crossguard. It excels at thrusting, bushcraft, brush hunting, and display. If you need a full-length pole boar spear, request one as a custom build.

Customise Your Sword Spear

Use the dropdown options at the top of this page to fully customise your sword spear before forging. All standard options are included at the listed price — no extra charge. With six blade lengths and six scabbard colours, this is one of the most configurable spears we forge — you are building a one-of-a-kind piece, not buying off a shelf.

Blade Finishing

Satin for a clean working look, Polished / Mirror for a display shine, Raw forge for a rugged hand-hammered feel, or Blacked / Coated for a dark tactical presence.

Blade Length

Six lengths from 10 to 20 inches. Shorter for a compact sword-spear, longer for maximum reach, weight, and thrusting power. Standard build is 17 inches.

Handle Material

The signature riveted rosewood-wrapped metal handle, or switch to a pale white-wood (Sadhan) grip to suit your build.

Scabbard Colour

Your included hand-stitched leather scabbard and belt frog in black, brown, yellow, red, green, or blue leather.

Free engraving on the blade — a name, initials, a date, or a short message. Ideal for a gift, a kit piece, or a one-of-a-kind collector blade.

A Sword and a Spear in One — Built for Real Use

The sword spear is one of the oldest practical ideas in edged weapons: take a long, sword-length blade and mount it on a handle long enough to give reach. The result does things neither a sword nor a short spear can. The 17-inch blade cuts and slashes like a short sword, while the 20-inch handle lets you thrust, keep distance, and put real leverage behind the point. It is a genuine reach weapon, not a wall decoration.

Because it is forged the same way as our working blades — full-tang 5160 spring steel, water-tempered for a hard edge over a springy spine — it stands up to real work. It is at home in the field for bushcraft and camp tasks, for thrusting and reach practice, and for hunting and dispatch in places where a short spear is legal and appropriate. The included leather scabbard with belt frog means you can carry it safely rather than leave it on a hook.

Choose a longer 20-inch blade and it leans further toward a glaive-like polearm; choose a shorter 10 or 12-inch blade and it becomes a compact, fast sword-spear. The same design flexes to how you want to use it.

The Gladius-Style Blade — Where Sword Meets Spear

The blade silhouette is gladius-style — a long, straight, broad-shouldered blade with a clipped thrusting point, echoing the short swords of the ancient world rebuilt at spear length. The original gladius was the Roman legionary's short sword, prized for a point that punched through and edges that cut on the draw. Mounted here on a long handle, that same efficient blade shape becomes a thrusting and cutting reach weapon.

If you came here searching for a gladius spear, this is it — but it is more accurately described as a sword spear, because the blade is sized and balanced like a sword rather than a small leaf spearhead. It is an original Everest Forge design that borrows the gladius blade profile rather than reproducing any single historical artefact.

Why Outdoorsmen & Collectors Choose This Sword Spear

It is real forged steel, not a wall-hanger. Full-tang 5160 spring steel, water-tempered and razor-sharpened — a blade built to be used, with the weight and balance to back it up.

It is a sword and a spear at once. Sword-length cutting power plus spear reach in a single piece. Few blades give you both, and fewer still in this manageable 37-inch size.

Total customisation is included, not upsold. Six blade lengths, four finishes, two handle woods, six scabbard colours, and free engraving — all part of the standard build.

It is complete and easy to own. Unlike six-foot pole boar spears, this arrives finished, handle and fitted leather scabbard included, ready to carry, display, or take to camp — and it ships worldwide without freight headaches.

It is built to last. Water-tempered 5160 and full-tang construction mean it is a blade you can actually rely on and hand down, not one that fails the first time it is pushed.

Who This Sword Spear Is For

Bushcrafters and outdoorsmen — a tough, full-tang reach blade for camp work, clearing, thrusting practice, and general field use.

Hunters — a functional sword-spear for brush hunting, dispatch, and reach where a short spear is legal and appropriate in your area. (See the FAQ on hunting use.)

Functional weapon and martial-arts enthusiasts — a real, battle-ready blade for thrusting and reach drills and serious handling.

Sword and polearm collectors — a distinctive sword-spear / gladius-style piece that stands apart from the usual leaf spears and short swords.

Reenactors and historical enthusiasts — a hand-forged reach weapon for display and posing. (Live steel is not intended for contact combat — see the FAQ.)

Preppers and survival-minded buyers — a low-tech, no-fail reach tool that needs no batteries and never jams.

Gift buyers — free engraving turns it into a personalised gift for the outdoorsman, martial artist, or blade collector who has everything.

How It's Made

01

Steel Selection

We start with 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — tough, springy, and proven for impact.

02

Hand Forging

The bar is heated and hammered to shape by hand, aligning the grain along the blade for strength across its full length.

03

Heat Treatment

The blade is water-tempered to set a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible spine that absorbs shock instead of snapping.

04

Hand Finishing

Your chosen finish is applied, the handle is rosewood-wrapped and riveted to the metal core, and a leather scabbard is stitched to fit.

Care & Maintenance

After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil).

Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard. Display stand or wall mount recommended.

Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.

Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Handle care: Treat the rosewood occasionally with a little wood oil to keep it from drying out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a sword or a spear?

It is both — a sword spear. The 17-inch gladius-style blade is sized and balanced like a short sword, while the 20-inch handle gives it spear-like reach and thrusting power. Think of it as a glaive-style reach weapon: sword-length cutting with spear-length control, in a manageable 37-inch overall package.

Is it functional, or just for display?

It is fully functional. The full-tang, water-tempered 5160 construction and razor-sharpened blade are built for real use — bushcraft, camp work, thrusting and reach practice, and hard handling. It also displays beautifully, but it is a working blade first, not a wall-hanger.

Can I use it as a boar or hunting spear?

It is a capable reach weapon for brush hunting and dispatch where a short spear is legal in your area, and the longer 18 to 20-inch blade options add reach and thrusting power. Be aware, though, that this is a 37-inch sword-spear, not a traditional six-foot pole boar spear with a crossguard. For dedicated long-range boar hunting we would forge you a full-length pole spear as a custom build. Always check your local hunting and weapon laws before field use.

Why is it called a gladius spear?

The name comes from the blade shape. The gladius was the short sword of the Roman legions, known for a strong thrusting point and clean cutting edges. This spear borrows that long, straight, clipped-point blade profile and mounts it on a handle for reach — so it is best described as a sword spear with a gladius-style blade. It is an original design, not a reproduction of any single artefact.

How customisable is it?

Highly. You can choose from six blade lengths (10 to 20 inches), four blade finishes, two handle woods, and six scabbard colours, plus add free engraving or upload your own logo or artwork. Every standard option is included in the price, so you are configuring a one-of-a-kind piece.

What steel is it made from, and is it durable?

It is forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — a steel prized for toughness, flexibility, and edge retention. It is water-tempered for a hard edge over a springy spine, and the full-tang construction keeps the blade locked solidly through the handle for genuine battle-ready strength.

Is the blade sharpened, and can I get it unsharpened?

It ships razor-sharpened and ready to use. If you would prefer a display, unsharpened edge that is safer for a home or office display, note it in your order or message us before we forge and we will finish it that way at no extra charge.

Does it come on a full-length pole or shaft?

No. This is a 37-inch sword spear with a 20-inch handle, not a long pole arm. That keeps it easy to handle, carry, display, and ship. If you need a longer mounted shaft or a full pole spear, request it as a custom build and we will forge to your specification.

Can I use this for LARP or contact stage combat?

This is live steel, intended for real functional use, display, collection, and reenactment posing rather than contact combat. Most LARP and contact-combat events require foam or blunted safety weapons and will not allow sharpened steel. If you want a piece purely for safe handling, ask us about a fully blunted display edge.

Can I have my name, a logo, or a photo engraved on it?

Yes. Free engraving of a name, initials, date, or short message is included, and you can also upload a logo, crest, symbol, or artwork for custom photo and logo engraving on the blade. It is a popular way to personalise a kit piece or create a unique gift.

How long does it take to make and ship?

Each sword spear is hand-forged to order, with a production time of about 3 to 5 business days. It then ships worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking, typically 5 to 10 business days in transit, roughly 8 to 15 business days from order to delivery.

What is your return and warranty policy?

Standard configurations carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition. Custom configurations such as custom length, finish, handle, or engraving are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Every sword spear is backed by a 6-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship.
