Spartan Spear — Hand-Forged Greek War Spear in 5160 Steel
The Everest Forge Spartan Spear is a hand-forged tribute to the dory — the spear of the ancient Greek hoplite, and the true weapon of Sparta. The broad, sculpted leaf blade sweeps from a wide cutting belly to a long thrusting point, set off with small drilled accents near the base and a clean steel bolster. It rides on a slim, pinned rosewood handle capped with a polished brass ball pommel, echoing the brass butt-fittings the Greeks wore on their war spears, and comes complete with a hand-stitched leather scabbard. Forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck springs, water-tempered, and full-tang from point to pommel, it is genuine, battle-ready steel.
To the Greeks, the spear mattered more than the sword. The hoplite who held the line at Thermopylae and Marathon did it with a dory in his hand, and a fine spear was a mark of a warrior's standing. The Spartan Spear carries that spirit in a form built for the modern collector: a real forged Greek war spear that displays beautifully and handles like the weapon it honours. Like the rest of our work, it is forged to your spec — five blade lengths, four finishes, two handle woods, six scabbard colours, and free engraving, all included.
Note: The Spartan Spear is an original Everest Forge design inspired by ancient Greek war spears. It is a 30-inch hand spear, not a six-foot pole dory on a full shaft; if you want a full-length pole version, we forge those as a custom build.

The Dory — The Spear of the Hoplite
In ancient Greece the spear, not the sword, was the warrior's primary weapon. The dory was the spear of the hoplite — the armoured citizen-soldier who fought shoulder to shoulder in the phalanx, spear in one hand and the great round hoplon shield in the other. It was the dory that held the pass at Thermopylae and broke the Persians at Marathon. So central was it that the Greeks spoke of land "won by the spear", and a hero's spear could be as famous as the hero himself.
The Spartan Spear is a modern, hand-forged tribute to that weapon — an original Everest Forge design rather than a copy of any single artefact. It keeps the broad, business-like blade and the brass-fitted balance of a Greek war spear, scaled into a hand spear you can display, handle, and own. It is built for anyone drawn to the world of Sparta, the hoplite, and the heroes of Greek legend.
A Complete Forged Greek Spear
Most Greek spears on the market come one of two ways: as a bare spearhead and brass butt-spike set you have to mount on your own shaft, or as a blunt mild-steel reenactment head on a seven to nine foot pole. The Spartan Spear is neither. It arrives as a complete, finished piece — a forged and sharpened 5160 blade, a pinned rosewood handle, a brass ball pommel, and a fitted leather scabbard — ready to display or handle out of the box.
And it is forged, not cast or stamped. The blade is hammered to shape by hand, water-tempered so the edge runs hard while the spine stays springy, and full-tang so the steel runs unbroken from the point through to the brass pommel. It has the looks of a museum Greek spear with the real capability of a working blade — the kind of piece that anchors a collection rather than just filling a wall.
Why Collectors & History Enthusiasts Choose This Spear
It honours the real Greek war spear. A broad, sculpted hoplite-style blade with a brass ball pommel — the spirit of the dory in a hand-forged piece.
It is real forged steel. Full-tang 5160 spring steel, water-tempered and sharpened — genuine weight, a real edge, and battle-ready strength, not a cast display prop.
It arrives complete. Forged blade, pinned rosewood handle, brass pommel, and a fitted leather scabbard — not a bare head or a parts kit.
Total customisation is included, not upsold. Five blade lengths, four finishes, two handle woods, six scabbard colours, and free engraving — all part of the standard build.
It displays like a museum piece. The sculpted blade and polished brass pommel give it real presence on a wall or stand.

How It's Made
01
Steel Selection
We start with 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — tough, springy, and proven for impact.
02
Hand Forging
The bar is heated and hammered to shape by hand, drawing out the broad Greek leaf blade and aligning the grain for strength.
03
Heat Treatment
The blade is water-tempered to set a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible spine that absorbs shock instead of snapping.
04
Hand Finishing
The drilled accents are cut, your finish is applied, the rosewood handle and brass ball pommel are fitted, and a leather scabbard is stitched to match.

Care & Maintenance
After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil), and wipe down the brass pommel.
Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard. Display stand or wall mount recommended.
Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.
Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.
Brass & handle care: Buff the brass pommel with metal polish to keep its shine, and treat the rosewood occasionally with a little wood oil.

Is this a real Greek dory spear?
It is a modern, hand-forged tribute to the dory — the spear of the Greek hoplite and the weapon of Sparta. It is an original Everest Forge design rather than an exact museum reproduction, scaled as a 30-inch hand spear rather than a full pole dory. It captures the broad blade and brass-fitted balance of a Greek war spear in real, sharpened forged steel.
Is it forged, or a cast display piece?
It is fully hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, water-tempered, full-tang, and sharpened. It is a real working spear, not a cast or stamped display prop. The looks of a museum Greek spear are backed by genuine capability.
Does it come complete, or is it just a spearhead?
It comes complete: a forged blade, a pinned rosewood handle, a brass ball pommel, and a fitted leather scabbard, ready to display or handle. Many Greek spears are sold as a bare spearhead and butt-spike set you have to mount yourself, or as a head on a long pole. This one arrives finished.
What are the small holes near the base of the blade?
They are small drilled accents near the base of the blade — a decorative detail that also trims a little weight. They are not a cut-through opening through the body of the blade, and the steel stays full and strong around them.
What is the brass ball pommel for?
The polished brass ball pommel finishes and balances the handle, and nods to the brass butt-fittings the Greeks used on their war spears. It gives the spear a clean, museum-like finish and a comfortable counterweight to the blade.
How is this different from your Achilles Spear?
The Spartan Spear leans into the historical Greek hoplite and Spartan war spear, with a sculpted blade and brass ball pommel. The Achilles Spear is our heroic, fantasy-and-medieval Greek warrior spear. Both are hand-forged Greek spears — choose the Spartan for the historical hoplite look, or the Achilles for the legendary-hero styling.
Is it a full-length pole spear?
No. This is a 30-inch hand spear with an 18-inch handle, not a six-foot pole dory on a full shaft. The compact size makes it easy to display, handle, and ship. If you want a full-length pole version, request it as a custom build and we will forge to your specification.
How customisable is it?
Highly. You can choose from five blade lengths (10 to 18 inches), four blade finishes, two handle woods, and six scabbard colours, plus add free engraving or upload your own logo or artwork. Every standard option is included in the price.
Is the blade sharpened, and can I get it unsharpened?
It ships hand-sharpened and ready to use. If you would prefer a display, unsharpened edge that is safer for a home or office display, note it in your order or message us before we forge and we will finish it that way at no extra charge.
Can I have my name, Greek lettering, or a logo engraved on it?
Yes. Free engraving of a name, initials, Greek lettering, date, or short message is included, and you can also upload a logo, crest, or artwork for custom photo and logo engraving on the blade. It is a popular way to personalise a piece or create a unique gift.
How long does it take to make and ship?
Each spear is hand-forged to order, with a production time of about 3 to 5 business days. It then ships worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking, typically 5 to 10 business days in transit, roughly 8 to 15 business days from order to delivery.
What is your return and warranty policy?
Standard configurations carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition. Custom configurations such as custom length, finish, handle wood, or engraving are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Every spear is backed by a 6-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship.
