Scout Spear — Hand-Forged Short Hunting & Throwing Spear in 5160 Steel
The Everest Forge Scout Spear is the smallest and lightest spear we make — a compact, hand-forged short spear built to carry, throw, and use. The broad leaf blade runs to a strong point, set off with a polished steel bolster, and rides on a classic stacked-leather handle: dozens of leather washers packed tight down the tang and capped with a polished steel pommel, the same time-proven grip found on military field knives. It comes complete with a hand-stitched leather scabbard. Forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck springs, water-tempered, and full-tang from point to pommel, it is a genuine working spear in a take-anywhere size.
At just 550 grams and 20 inches overall, the Scout is fast in the hand, quick to throw, and easy to pack or wear on a belt — a real hunting and throwing spear you actually carry rather than leave on the wall. It is built for hunters and bushcrafters who want a light field spear, throwers who want a balanced short spear to practise with, and collectors who like the classic stacked-leather look. Like everything we make, it is forged to your spec — your blade length, finish, handle material, and scabbard colour, with free engraving, all included.
Honest note: This is a 20-inch short hand spear, not a six-foot pole spear on a full shaft. It is built for hunting, throwing practice, field and camp use, thrusting, and display. If you want a full-length pole version, we forge those as a custom build.

Small, Light & Ready to Throw
The whole point of the Scout is its size. At 20 inches and 550 grams it is the most compact and the lightest spear in our range — short enough to wear on a belt or stow in a pack, light enough to carry all day, and quick enough to bring on target in an instant. The broad leaf head still gives a strong point and a real cutting edge, so nothing is given up in capability; it is simply scaled down to a true field and throwing size.
That balance makes it as much a throwing spear as a hunting one. The forward-weighted leaf head and the leverage of the handle give it a clean, predictable flight for throwing practice, while the same balance makes it fast and controllable for thrusting and close work. It is the spear to actually take outdoors — to the range, the trail, or the field — rather than leave on a stand.
The Stacked-Leather Handle
The Scout's signature is its handle. Instead of a wood grip, it uses a classic stacked-leather construction: dozens of leather washers threaded onto the full tang, compressed tight, and shaped into a comfortable grip, then locked in place by a polished steel pommel cap. It is the same handle style trusted on generations of military and field knives, prized because it is grippy in the wet, easy on the hand, and extremely durable.
It also gives the Scout a distinctive, vintage-field look that none of our other spears share. If you would rather have wood, you can choose a solid rosewood or white-wood handle instead from the options above — but the stacked leather is what gives this little spear its character. As an original Everest Forge design, it is the most accessible price in our spear range, and an easy way to own a real hand-forged spear.
Why Hunters & Throwers Choose This Spear
It is the lightest, most portable spear we make. At 550 grams and 20 inches, it carries on a belt or in a pack and is quick in the hand.
It throws as well as it thrusts. The balanced leaf head gives a clean flight for throwing practice and fast control for close work.
The stacked-leather handle is a classic. Grippy, comfortable, and durable — the trusted field-knife grip, with a steel pommel cap.
It is real forged steel. Full-tang 5160 spring steel, water-tempered and sharpened — a genuine working spear, not a cast or stainless display piece.
Total customisation is included, not upsold. Blade length, four finishes, three handle materials, six scabbard colours, and free engraving — all part of the standard build.

How It's Made
01
Steel Selection
We start with 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — tough, springy, and proven for impact.
02
Hand Forging
The bar is heated and hammered to shape by hand, drawing out the compact leaf blade and aligning the grain for strength.
03
Heat Treatment
The blade is water-tempered to set a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible spine that absorbs shock instead of snapping.
04
Handle & Finish
The leather washers are stacked and compressed onto the tang, the steel pommel is fitted, your finish is applied, and a leather scabbard is stitched to match.

Care & Maintenance
After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil), and wipe down the steel pommel.
Leather handle care: Keep the stacked-leather grip dry and treat it occasionally with leather conditioner or a little oil to stop it drying out or cracking.
Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard. Display stand or wall mount recommended.
Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.
Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Is this a real, functional spear?
Yes. It is individually hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon steel, water-tempered, full-tang, and sharpened — a genuine working spear, not a cast or stainless display replica. It is simply built in a compact, lightweight size for field and throwing use.
How small and light is it, and why does that matter?
It is 20 inches overall and about 550 grams — the smallest and lightest spear we make. That makes it easy to wear on a belt or pack into a bag, quick to bring on target, and comfortable to carry all day. It is a spear you actually take outdoors rather than leave on display.
What is a stacked-leather handle?
It is a handle built from many leather washers threaded onto the full tang, compressed tight, shaped into a grip, and capped with a steel pommel. It is the classic field-knife handle, grippy even when wet, comfortable in the hand, and very durable. It also gives the Scout its distinctive vintage look.
Can I have a wooden handle instead of leather?
Yes. The stacked-leather grip is the standard, but you can choose a solid rosewood or pale white-wood (Sadhan) handle instead from the options at the top of the page if you prefer wood.
Can it really be thrown?
Yes, by experienced users. The forward-weighted leaf head and balanced handle give it a clean, predictable flight for throwing practice. As with any thrown blade, throwing adds wear and risk of damage, so throw into a proper soft target and check the spear over afterwards.
How is this different from your Boar and Javelin Spears?
The Scout is the smallest and lightest, with a stacked-leather handle, made to carry and throw. The Boar Spear is a broader, heavier dedicated hunting spear, and the Javelin Spear is a longer throwing-focused spear. Choose the Scout if you want the most compact, portable, do-a-bit-of-everything short spear.
Is it a full-length pole spear?
No. This is a 20-inch short hand spear with an 11-inch handle, not a six-foot pole spear on a full shaft. The compact size is the whole point — it is what makes it so light and easy to carry, store, and ship. If you want a full-length pole version, request it as a custom build.
How customisable is it?
Highly. You can choose your blade length (9-inch standard, with 10-inch, 12-inch, 14-inch, and 16-inch options), four blade finishes, three handle materials, and six scabbard colours, plus add free engraving or upload your own logo or artwork. Every standard option is included in the price.
Is the blade sharpened, and can I get it unsharpened?
It ships hand-sharpened and ready to use. If you would prefer a display, unsharpened edge that is safer for a home or office display, note it in your order or message us before we forge and we will finish it that way at no extra charge.
Can I use this for LARP or contact stage combat?
This is live steel, intended for real functional use, hunting, throwing, display, and collection rather than contact combat. Most LARP and contact-combat events require foam or blunted safety weapons and will not allow sharpened steel. If you want a piece purely for safe handling, ask us about a fully blunted display edge.
Can I have my name, a logo, or a photo engraved on it?
Yes. Free engraving of a name, initials, date, or short message is included, and you can also upload a logo, monogram, or artwork for custom photo and logo engraving on the blade. It is a popular way to personalise a field kit or create a unique gift.
How long does it take to make and ship?
Each spear is hand-forged to order, with a production time of about 3 to 5 business days. It then ships worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking, typically 5 to 10 business days in transit, roughly 8 to 15 business days from order to delivery.
