Harpoon Spear — Hand-Forged Barbed Harpoon in 5160 Steel
The Everest Forge Harpoon Spear is a compact, hand-forged barbed harpoon — the only harpoon in our range, and a real one. The head is a broad central point flanked by two bold, swept-back barbs, with an open cut-out between them, exactly the shape that for thousands of years let hunters and fishers strike and hold their catch. It rides on a short rosewood handle finished with a distinctive steel ring pommel at the butt, ready for a lanyard or line, and comes complete with a hand-stitched leather scabbard shaped to the barbed head. Forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck springs, water-tempered, and full-tang, it is a genuine working harpoon, not a decorative casting.
It is a small, characterful piece — light, fast, and unlike anything else on the wall. The Harpoon is built for collectors who want something different, for fishing and harpoon enthusiasts, and for anyone drawn to primitive and survival tools done in real forged steel. Like everything we make, it is forged to your spec — your blade length, finish, handle material, and scabbard colour, with free engraving, all included.
Honest note: This is a compact hand harpoon on a short handle, not a full-length pole harpoon or a fishing speargun. It is built for display, collection, and functional use. If you want a full-length pole version, we forge those as a custom build.

The Barbed Harpoon Head
The barbs are what make a harpoon a harpoon. Where a plain spear point goes in and comes back out, the Harpoon's two swept-back barbs are designed to hold once they have struck — the reason the design has been used for hunting and fishing across every culture, from ancient bone harpoons to the iron heads of later eras. On this piece the barbs flare wide from a strong central point, with an open cut-out between them that lightens the head and sharpens the silhouette.
It is forged as one full-tang piece of 5160 steel, water-tempered so the point stays hard and the body keeps its spring, then sharpened. The barbed head is not just for show — it is a real, functional harpoon shape — but it also makes the Harpoon one of the most striking and unusual pieces you can hang on a wall, completely different from a standard spear or knife.
The Ring Pommel
At the butt of the rosewood handle sits a steel ring pommel — a clean steel loop that finishes the harpoon and gives it a real point of difference. On a harpoon the ring is practical: it is the natural place to tie a lanyard or a retrieval line, the way a traditional harpoon would be tethered so a struck catch could be hauled back. It also makes the piece easy to hang for display.
Together with the barbed head, the ring pommel gives the Harpoon a complete, purposeful identity — a compact, characterful tool that looks like it has a job to do. As an original Everest Forge design at the most accessible price in our spear range, it is an easy and unusual piece to add to a collection.
Why Collectors & Enthusiasts Choose This Harpoon
It is genuinely different. A real barbed harpoon head with a steel ring pommel — nothing else in our range, or on most walls, looks like it.
It is real forged steel. Full-tang 5160 spring steel, water-tempered and sharpened — a working harpoon, not a cast or stainless display piece.
The barbed head is functional. The swept-back barbs are a true harpoon shape, designed to strike and hold, not just decoration.
It is compact and characterful. Small, light, and full of personality, with a ring pommel for a lanyard or line.
Total customisation is included, not upsold. Blade length, four finishes, four handle materials, six scabbard colours, and free engraving — all part of the standard build.

How It's Made
01
Steel Selection
We start with 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — tough, springy, and proven for impact.
02
Hand Forging
The bar is heated and hammered to shape by hand, drawing out the central point and the two swept-back barbs.
03
Heat Treatment
The head is water-tempered to set a hard point backed by a flexible body that absorbs shock instead of snapping.
04
Handle & Finish
Your finish is applied, the rosewood handle and steel ring pommel are fitted, and a leather scabbard is stitched to the barbed shape.

Care & Maintenance
After every use: Wipe the head clean and dry, including around the barbs and cut-out. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil), and wipe down the steel ring pommel.
Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard. Display stand or wall mount recommended; the ring pommel makes hanging easy.
Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.
Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side, working carefully around the barbs. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.
Handle care: Treat a rosewood or horn handle occasionally with a little oil to keep it from drying out.

What makes this a harpoon rather than a spear?
The barbs. A harpoon has swept-back barbs at the head that are designed to hold once they have struck, where a plain spear point goes straight in and out. This Harpoon has a central point with two bold barbs and an open cut-out between them — a true harpoon shape, hand-forged in 5160 steel rather than cast.
Is the barbed head functional or just decorative?
It is a real, functional harpoon head — full-tang 5160 steel, water-tempered, and sharpened. The barbed shape works the way a harpoon is meant to. It also happens to look striking on display, but the capability is genuine, not a casting.
What is the steel ring pommel for?
The ring at the butt of the handle is the natural place to tie a lanyard or a retrieval line — exactly how a traditional harpoon would be tethered so a struck catch could be hauled back. It also makes the piece very easy to hang for display.
How big is it?
It is compact — a 5-inch barbed head on a 9-inch handle, around 14 inches overall and about 550 grams as standard. You can size the head up to 6, 7, or 8 inches from the options at the top of the page if you want a larger harpoon.
Is it a full-length pole harpoon or a speargun?
No. This is a compact hand harpoon on a short handle, not a full-length pole harpoon and not a fishing speargun. The compact size makes it easy to handle, display, and ship. If you want a full-length pole version, request it as a custom build and we will forge to your specification.
How customisable is it?
Highly. You can choose your blade length (5-inch standard, with 6, 7, and 8-inch options), four blade finishes, four handle materials (rosewood, white-wood, horn, or leather), and six scabbard colours, plus add free engraving or upload your own logo or artwork. Every standard option is included in the price.
What steel is it made from, and is it durable?
It is forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — a steel prized for toughness, flexibility, and edge retention. It is water-tempered for a hard point over a springy body, and the full-tang construction keeps real strength behind the barbed head.
Is the head sharpened, and can I get it unsharpened?
It ships hand-sharpened and ready to use. If you would prefer a display, unsharpened edge that is safer for a home or office display, note it in your order or message us before we forge and we will finish it that way at no extra charge.
Can I use this for LARP or contact stage combat?
This is live steel, intended for real functional use, display, and collection rather than contact combat. A barbed head in particular is not suitable for contact use against people. Most LARP and contact-combat events require foam or blunted safety weapons and will not allow sharpened steel.
Can I have my name, a logo, or a photo engraved on it?
Yes. Free engraving of a name, initials, date, or short message is included, and you can also upload a logo, monogram, or artwork for custom photo and logo engraving on the blade. It is a popular way to personalise a piece or create a unique gift.
How long does it take to make and ship?
Each harpoon is hand-forged to order, with a production time of about 3 to 5 business days. It then ships worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking, typically 5 to 10 business days in transit, roughly 8 to 15 business days from order to delivery.
What is your return and warranty policy?
Standard configurations carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition. Custom configurations such as custom length, finish, handle material, or engraving are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Every harpoon is backed by a 6-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship.
