Viking Spear — Hand-Forged Authentic Norse War Spear with Broad Leaf Blade

The Everest Forge Viking Spear is a hand-forged Norse war spear built the way the originals were meant to be: real high-carbon steel, sharpened, and ready to work. The broad, leaf-shaped blade carries a strong central ridge that runs to an acute piercing point, mounted on a 20-inch riveted rosewood handle capped with a steel pommel. It comes complete with a hand-stitched leather belt-frog scabbard. Forged from 5160 leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs, water-tempered, and full-tang from point to pommel, it is a genuine, battle-ready Viking spear — not a cast wall-hanger or a bare spearhead you have to finish yourself.

This is the classic Norse war spear: the broad-bladed thrusting weapon that was the true backbone of the Viking warrior, more common on the battlefield than either the sword or the axe. It is built for collectors who want the real thing, for reenactors who need a hand-forged piece with authentic presence, and for anyone who appreciates a functional Norse weapon. And it is forged to your spec — six blade lengths, four finishes, two handle woods, six scabbard colours, and free engraving, all included.

Honest note: This is a 32-inch hand spear — a complete forged spear with a 20-inch grip — not a six-foot shield-wall pole spear on a full ash shaft. It is built for thrusting, handling, reenactment, and display. If you want a full-length pole spear, we forge those as a custom build.

A True Norse War Spear, Built for Real Use

This is not a decorative casting. The Viking Spear is forged the same way as our working blades — a bar of 5160 spring steel hammered to shape by hand, water-tempered so the edge runs hard while the spine stays springy, and full-tang so the steel runs unbroken through the handle. The result is a spear with real weight, real balance, and a point built to thrust.

The broad leaf-shaped blade is a true war-spear profile. Its width is the point: a leaf blade cuts as well as it thrusts, opening a wide, deep wound channel rather than a narrow puncture, and the central ridge stiffens it for driving power without adding dead weight. That cut-and-thrust versatility is exactly why the spear, not the sword, was the everyday weapon of the Norse warrior. In your hands today it translates to a genuinely capable piece for thrusting practice, reenactment drills, bushcraft and camp tasks, and serious handling.

Choose a longer 16 to 20-inch blade and it grows into a heavier war spear with more reach; choose the standard 12-inch and you get the fast, balanced classic. Either way, the included leather scabbard with belt frog means you carry it safely rather than leave it on a hook.

The Spear in the Viking Age — Odin's Weapon and the Shield Wall

To the Norse, the spear was the most important weapon of all. Swords were costly and carried by the wealthy few, but nearly every free man owned a spear. It was the backbone of the shield wall, the line of overlapping shields and projecting spear points that won and lost battles across the Viking Age. Spears were thrust over the wall, thrown at the charge, and used in the close press where longer weapons could not swing.

The spear was also Odin's own weapon. The Allfather carried Gungnir, the spear that never missed its mark, and Norse warriors would cast a spear over an enemy host to dedicate them to Odin before battle. Our Viking Spear is an original Everest Forge interpretation of that heritage — a hand-forged leaf-bladed war spear that carries the spirit of the shield wall into a piece you can own, handle, and display, rather than a reproduction of any single museum artefact.

Why Collectors & Reenactors Choose This Viking Spear

It is authentic forged steel, not a stainless wall-hanger. Full-tang 5160 spring steel, water-tempered and sharpened — the real thing, with the weight and balance of a working war spear.

It arrives complete, not as a bare head. Almost every Viking spear on the market is a spearhead alone, unsharpened, sold "pole not included." Yours comes finished — blade, fitted rosewood handle, and a hand-stitched leather scabbard — ready to use or display out of the box.

It is a genuine broad-leaf war spear. The wide leaf-shaped blade is a classic Norse battlefield profile that cuts and thrusts in equal measure — not a thin, generic point — the same kind of blade prized in serious reenactment and collection.

Total customisation is included, not upsold. Six blade lengths, four finishes, two handle woods, six scabbard colours, and free engraving — all part of the standard build.

It is built to last and to pass down. Water-tempered 5160 and full-tang construction mean this is a spear you can actually rely on, not one that fails the first time it is used in earnest.

How It's Made

01

Steel Selection

We start with 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — tough, springy, and proven for impact.

02

Hand Forging

The bar is heated and hammered to shape by hand, drawing out the broad leaf blade and aligning the grain for strength.

03

Heat Treatment

The blade is water-tempered to set a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible spine that absorbs shock instead of snapping.

04

Hand Finishing

Your chosen finish is applied, the rosewood handle is fitted and riveted, and a leather scabbard is stitched to fit.

Care & Maintenance

After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil).

Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard. Display stand or wall mount recommended.

Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.

Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Handle care: Treat the rosewood occasionally with a little wood oil to keep it from drying out.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this an authentic, real forged Viking spear?

Yes. It is individually hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, water-tempered, full-tang, and sharpened — a genuine functional war spear, not a cast or stainless display replica. It is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Norse leaf-bladed war spear rather than a reproduction of one specific museum artefact, built to look and handle like the real thing.

What blade shape is this — does it have wings or lugs?

This is a broad leaf-shaped Viking war-spear blade, not a winged or lugged spear. The wide leaf profile with a raised central ridge is one of the most common and authentic Norse spear forms. Its advantage is versatility: it thrusts deep and also cuts on the way, opening a wider wound than a narrow point, while the ridge keeps the blade stiff and strong.

Is it functional, or just for display?

It is fully functional. The full-tang, water-tempered 5160 construction and sharpened blade are built for real use — thrusting practice, reenactment drills, bushcraft, and hard handling. It also displays beautifully, but it is a working war spear first, not a wall-hanger.

Is it a full shield-wall pole spear?

No. This is a 32-inch hand spear — a complete forged spear with a 20-inch grip — rather than a six-foot pole spear on a full ash shaft. It is built for thrusting, handling, reenactment, and display. If you want a long shield-wall pole spear or atgeir-style hewing spear, we forge those as a custom build.

How customisable is it?

Highly. You can choose from six blade lengths (10 to 20 inches), four blade finishes, two handle woods, and six scabbard colours, plus add free engraving or upload your own logo, runes, or artwork. Every standard option is included in the price, so you are configuring a one-of-a-kind Norse spear.

What steel is it made from, and is it durable?

It is forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — a steel prized for toughness, flexibility, and edge retention. It is water-tempered for a hard edge over a springy spine, and the full-tang construction keeps the blade locked solidly through the handle for genuine battle-ready strength.

Is the blade sharpened, and can I get it unsharpened?

It ships hand-sharpened and ready to use. If you would prefer a display, unsharpened edge that is safer for a home or office display, note it in your order or message us before we forge and we will finish it that way at no extra charge.

Can I use this for LARP or contact stage combat?

This is live steel, intended for real functional use, display, collection, and reenactment posing rather than contact combat. Most LARP and contact-combat events require foam or blunted safety weapons and will not allow sharpened steel. If you want a piece purely for safe handling, ask us about a fully blunted display edge.

Can I have runes, my name, a logo, or a photo engraved on it?

Yes. Free engraving of a name, initials, runes, date, or short message is included, and you can also upload a logo, rune-row, sigil, or artwork for custom photo and logo engraving on the blade. It is a popular way to personalise a Norse kit piece or create a unique gift.

How long does it take to make and ship?

Each spear is hand-forged to order, with a production time of about 3 to 5 business days. It then ships worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking, typically 5 to 10 business days in transit, roughly 8 to 15 business days from order to delivery.

Do you ship to my country, and what about customs?

We ship worldwide from Nepal with fully tracked, insured delivery. International orders may be subject to customs duties or import taxes set by your own country's customs authority, paid separately by you on delivery. Please also check that owning this type of blade is permitted where you live before ordering.

What is your return and warranty policy?

Standard configurations carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition. Custom configurations such as custom length, finish, handle, or engraving are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Every spear is backed by a 6-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship.
