Mesa Spear — Hand-Forged Short Spear with Turquoise Accents
The Everest Forge Mesa Spear is a compact, hand-forged short spear with a character all its own. The broad leaf blade runs to a strong point and sits on a long rosewood handle set with decorative turquoise stone accents — bands of blue-green stone inlaid into the wood that give the spear a warm, Southwest-inspired look you will not find anywhere else in our range. It comes complete with a hand-stitched leather sheath built for back carry, so it rides comfortably across your back and leaves your hands free on the move. Forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, oil-tempered for toughness and edge stability, and full-tang, it is a real working short spear, not a decorative piece.
At 26 inches it is shorter than a battlefield spear but longer and more authoritative than a knife or dagger — the compact form long favoured for hunting, tracking, and close work because it is mobile, accurate, and versatile. It is built for hunters and outdoorsmen, throwers, and collectors who want a short spear with real visual character. Like everything we make, it is forged to your spec — choose your blade finish and scabbard colour, with free engraving, all included.
Honest note: This is a 26-inch short hand spear, not a six-foot pole spear on a full shaft. It is built for hunting, throwing practice, field and camp use, thrusting, and display. If you want a full-length pole version, we forge those as a custom build.

The Turquoise Accents
What sets the Mesa apart is its handle. Bands of decorative turquoise stone are inlaid into the rosewood, their blue-green colour standing against the dark grain for a warm, Southwest-inspired look. It is a detail drawn from the long tradition of decorating fine hunting weapons with stone and natural materials, and it gives the Mesa a character none of our other spears share — as much an object to display as a tool to use.
The stonework is decorative rather than structural: the strength comes from the full-tang 5160 steel running through the handle, while the turquoise simply makes the spear yours to admire. It is the kind of distinctive touch that turns a working short spear into a centrepiece.
A Real Short Spear, Built to Carry
Under the decoration, the Mesa is a genuine working spear. The broad leaf blade is hand-forged from 5160 spring steel and oil-tempered — a heat treatment that builds in toughness, durability, and edge stability for repeated use. The full-tang construction runs the steel unbroken through the handle, and the long handle balances the forward weight of the blade for control in the hand or in a controlled throw.
It also comes ready to carry. The included leather sheath is built for back carry, with a strap system that holds the spear securely across your back and keeps your hands free as you move — mirroring how hunters historically carried a short spear on the trail. It is a spear meant to be taken out and used, not just hung up, though it looks the part on a wall too.
Why Hunters & Collectors Choose This Spear
The turquoise accents are unique. Inlaid blue-green stone in a rosewood handle gives the Mesa a Southwest character no other spear in our range has.
It is real forged steel. Full-tang 5160 spring steel, oil-tempered and sharpened — a genuine working short spear, not a cast or stainless display piece.
It is built to carry. The leather back-carry sheath rides across your back and keeps your hands free on the move.
It is compact and versatile. Short enough for mobility and close work, balanced for both thrusting and controlled throwing.
Customisation is included, not upsold. Four blade finishes, six sheath colours, and free engraving — all part of the standard build.

How It's Made
01
Steel Selection
We start with 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — tough, springy, and proven for impact.
02
Hand Forging
The bar is heated and hammered to shape by hand, drawing out the broad leaf blade and aligning the grain for strength.
03
Heat Treatment
The blade is oil-tempered to build in toughness, durability, and edge stability for repeated use.
04
Handle & Finish
Your finish is applied, the rosewood handle is fitted with its turquoise stone accents, and a back-carry leather sheath is stitched to match.

Care & Maintenance
After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil).
Turquoise & handle care: Keep the handle dry and treat the rosewood occasionally with a little wood oil. Avoid knocking the stone accents against hard surfaces, as inlaid stone can chip.
Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather sheath. Display stand or wall mount recommended.
Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.
Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

What are the turquoise accents on the handle?
They are decorative bands of turquoise stone inlaid into the rosewood handle. The blue-green colour stands against the dark wood for a warm, Southwest-inspired look that no other spear in our range has. The stone is a decorative accent; the strength comes from the full-tang steel running through the handle.
Is this a real, functional spear?
Yes. It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon steel, oil-tempered, full-tang, and sharpened — a genuine working short spear, not a cast or stainless display replica. The turquoise accents are decorative, but the spear itself is built to be used.
Why is it oil-tempered?
This blade is oil-tempered, a heat treatment that builds in toughness, durability, and edge stability for repeated use. It gives a slightly different balance of properties than water tempering, with an emphasis on resilience.
What is the back-carry sheath?
The included leather sheath is fitted with a strap system designed to be worn across your back, so the spear rides securely and your hands stay free as you move. It mirrors how hunters historically carried a short spear on the trail, and it is included with the spear in your choice of six leather colours.
Can it be thrown?
Yes, by experienced users. Its balanced proportions let it work as a short spear in hand or as a controlled throwing spear. As with any thrown blade, throwing adds wear and risk of damage, so throw into a proper soft target and check the spear over afterwards.
How is this different from your other short spears?
The Mesa is the decorative one, defined by its inlaid turquoise stone accents and back-carry sheath. The Boar Spear is a plain dedicated hunting spear, and the Scout Spear is the smallest with a stacked-leather handle. Choose the Mesa if you want a short spear with real visual character.
Is it a full-length pole spear?
No. This is a 26-inch short hand spear with a 15-inch handle, not a six-foot pole spear on a full shaft. The compact size makes it easy to carry, handle, store, and ship. If you want a full-length pole version, request it as a custom build and we will forge to your specification.
How customisable is it?
You can choose from four blade finishes and six leather sheath colours, plus add free engraving or upload your own logo or artwork. Every standard option is included in the price. If you want a different blade length or a custom handle, ask us about a custom build.
Is the blade sharpened, and can I get it unsharpened?
It ships hand-sharpened and ready to use. If you would prefer a display, unsharpened edge that is safer for a home or office display, note it in your order or message us before we forge and we will finish it that way at no extra charge.
Can I use this for LARP or contact stage combat?
This is live steel, intended for real functional use, hunting, throwing, display, and collection rather than contact combat. Most LARP and contact-combat events require foam or blunted safety weapons and will not allow sharpened steel. If you want a piece purely for safe handling, ask us about a fully blunted display edge.
Can I have my name, a logo, or a photo engraved on it?
Yes. Free engraving of a name, initials, date, or short message is included, and you can also upload a logo, monogram, or artwork for custom photo and logo engraving on the blade. It is a popular way to personalise a piece or create a unique gift.
How long does it take to make and ship?
Each spear is hand-forged to order, with a production time of about 3 to 5 business days. It then ships worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking, typically 5 to 10 business days in transit, roughly 8 to 15 business days from order to delivery.
