20-Inch Langseax Sword — Heavy-Duty Hand-Forged Viking Seax with Leather-Wrapped Handle

This is a hand-forged langseax sword built heavy — a 20-inch single-edged Viking blade forged in Nepal from 5160 leaf-spring steel, full-tang and water-tempered, weighing in at around 1.02 kg. The langseax was the long war-knife of the Saxons and Vikings, and this is its heavy-duty form: longer and weightier than a standard 18-inch seax, with a leather-wrapped rosewood handle and a real chopping edge.

Where most of our seaxes run 18 inches, this one steps up to a full 20-inch blade and over a kilo of mass — the biggest, hardest-hitting langseax in the range. That weight is the point: it drives the edge through wood, brush and target like a heavy chopper, while keeping the single-edged long-seax profile the Saxons and Norsemen carried from the Migration Period through the Viking Age.

The full tang runs the length of a 6-inch rosewood handle wrapped in leather for a secure hold under hard use, and the semi-polished blade comes sharpened and ready. Order it from 16 inches up to 26 inches, though the 20-inch standard is what makes this one hit the way it does.

Honest note: this is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Viking and Anglo-Saxon long seax, historically inspired rather than a museum-exact replica. It is live steel — sharp, full-tang and functional — built for real chopping, cutting, reenactment and display, but not for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring. Want a period-correct build? That is a custom order.

The Heavy-Duty Langseax

A langseax is the long seax — the sword-length version of the single-edged blade the Saxons and Vikings carried as a primary sidearm. This one is built for those who want that blade with real weight behind it. At 20 inches and around 1.02 kg it sits at the heavy end of the seax world: more reach, more mass, more cutting authority than a standard 18-inch langseax. If you want a working long seax that doubles as a serious chopper, this is the one to take down off the wall.

Caring for Your High-Carbon Seax

5160 is a high-carbon steel and will surface-rust if neglected. Keep the blade dry, wipe it down after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. Keep the leather wrap and scabbard dry too, and for long-term storage keep the seax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry.

20-Inch Langseax Sword — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a langseax?

A langseax — the long seax — is the sword-length form of the seax, the single-edged blade carried across the Saxon, Norse and Germanic world as a primary sidearm. Longer than a utility seax, it bridges large knife and short sword. This one is a heavy-duty 20-inch langseax.

How is this different from your 18-inch seaxes?

It is bigger and heavier. Most of our seaxes run 18 inches; this one has a full 20-inch blade and weighs around 1.02 kg, making it the heaviest, hardest-hitting langseax in the range — built for chopping and reach rather than light utility.

Is it a sword or a knife?

At 20 inches it is firmly sword-length and handles as a single-edged short sword, while keeping the working character the seax was known for. It sits at the heavy end of the long-seax family.

How heavy is it, and why?

Around 1.02 kg. The weight is deliberate: it puts real mass behind the edge so the blade drives through wood, brush and target like a heavy chopper, rather than handling like a light utility knife.

What steel is it made from, and is it full tang?

It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, water-tempered for toughness and edge retention, and built full-tang for strength under hard use. That makes it a functional working sword, not a display-only piece.

Does it come sharpened and ready to use?

Yes. Each blade is hand-sharpened and ready to use on arrival. It is live steel — sharp and functional — so it is not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.

What blade lengths can I order?

The standard blade is 20 inches. You can order it from 16 inches up to 26 inches, though 20 inches and up is where this blade's heavy-duty character comes into its own.

What is the handle like?

A 6-inch full tang in rosewood, wrapped in leather for a secure grip under hard use. White-wood is also available to order.

Does it come with a scabbard?

Yes. Every blade ships with a leather-wrapped wooden scabbard, in your chosen colour from black, brown, yellow, red, green or blue.

Can I personalise or engrave it?

Yes. You can add a name, initials or a short message, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalisation is included at no extra charge on standard builds.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide by tracked, insured DHL or FedEx with secure checkout. Please check edged-weapon import rules for your country before ordering, as they vary.

How do I care for the blade?

Keep this high-carbon blade dry, wipe it after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. Keep the leather wrap dry too, and for long-term storage keep the seax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry.
