Seax Machete — 20-Inch Hand-Forged 5160 Chopper with a Fullered, Drilled Blade

This is a hand-forged seax machete — a 20-inch single-edged chopper forged in Nepal from reclaimed 5160 leaf-spring steel, full-tang and water-tempered. A modern working machete built on the ancient seax profile, its big blade is lightened by a deep fuller and a row of drilled holes, so it swings fast and chops hard at just around 720 grams. Built to work the jungle, farm and field, not to sit on a shelf.

The historical seax was the do-everything blade of the Saxons and Norsemen. This is its modern working descendant: a 20-inch machete made for clearing brush, splitting kindling, limbing and heavy field tasks. Where most 20-inch blades feel heavy and slow, this one is engineered to move.

That speed comes from how the blade is built. A deep fuller runs the length of the spine and a row of drilled holes removes steel from the body — both there purely for weight management. The result is a wide, hard-hitting chopper that stays light and quick in the hand, finished with a two-tone forged spine over a bright polished edge, a 6-inch full-tang rosewood handle, and a leather-wrapped wooden scabbard for the field.

Honest note: this is a modern working machete inspired by the historical seax, not a museum-exact replica — an original Everest Forge design. It is live steel — sharp, full-tang and functional — built for real cutting, chopping and field use, and for collection or display, but not for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.

Built Light to Chop Hard

A 20-inch blade gives you reach and chopping power, but it usually comes at the cost of weight. This seax machete is built the other way around. The deep fuller and the row of drilled holes are not decoration — they are weight management, cutting mass out of the spine and body where it slows the blade down while leaving the edge and tip full. At around 720 grams it is light for its size, so it accelerates fast into the cut and stays controllable through a long day of clearing. Heavy where it hits, light where it does not need to be.

Caring for Your High-Carbon Machete

5160 is a high-carbon steel and will surface-rust if neglected, especially after field use. Keep the blade dry, wipe it down after working, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage — paying attention to the fuller and drilled holes where moisture can sit. For long-term storage, keep it out of the scabbard so the edge stays dry.

Seax Machete — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a seax machete?

A seax machete is a modern working machete built on the profile of the historical seax — the single-edged blade of the Saxons and Norsemen. This one is a 20-inch chopper made for jungle, farm and field work rather than as a historical replica.

What are the fuller and the drilled holes for?

Weight management. The deep fuller and the row of drilled holes remove steel from the spine and body of the blade where it would otherwise slow the swing, while leaving the edge and tip full. That keeps a big 20-inch blade light and fast in the hand.

Why is it so light for a 20-inch blade?

It weighs around 720 grams because the fuller and drilled holes cut mass out of the blade. The weight that remains sits where it does the work — behind the edge — so it chops hard but accelerates quickly and stays controllable.

Is this a historical seax?

No, and we are upfront about that. It is a modern working machete inspired by the seax profile — an original Everest Forge design built for real field use, not a museum-exact historical reproduction.

What steel is it made from, and is it full tang?

It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, water-tempered for toughness and flexibility, and built full-tang for strength under hard chopping. That makes it a genuine working tool.

Does it come sharpened and ready to use?

Yes. Each blade is hand-sharpened and ready to work on arrival. It is live steel — sharp and functional — so it is not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.

What blade lengths can I order?

The standard blade is 20 inches. You can order it from 16 inches up to 26 inches, depending on the reach and chopping power you want.

What is it good for?

Clearing brush, limbing, splitting kindling, camp tasks and general heavy field work — anything where you want the reach and power of a chopper that still handles quickly. It suits farmers, bush clearers, campers and survivalists.

Can I choose the handle and scabbard?

Yes. The handle comes in rosewood, white-wood, horn and combinations, and the leather-wrapped wooden scabbard is available in black, brown, yellow, red, green and blue.

Can I personalise or engrave it?

Yes. You can add a name, initials or a short message, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalisation is included at no extra charge on standard builds.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide by tracked, insured DHL or FedEx with secure checkout. Please check edged-tool import rules for your country before ordering, as they vary.

How do I care for the blade?

Keep this high-carbon blade dry, wipe it after working, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage, paying attention to the fuller and holes where moisture can sit. For long-term storage keep it out of the scabbard so the edge stays dry.
