Hand-Forged 9th-Century Viking Sword — Full-Tang Norse Blade with Decorated Guard & Pommel

This is a hand-forged, fully functional 9th-century Viking sword — a double-edged Norse blade forged in Nepal from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, full tang, oil-tempered, and sharpened to a true cutting edge. It carries the broad, fullered blade of the Viking age finished with a decorated brass guard and pommel, a black-wrapped grip, and a matching black scabbard with gold-tone fittings. Every sword is made to order in your chosen length, finish, and engraving.

The standard blade is 30 inches on an 8-inch handle, for an overall length around 38 inches. The wide central fuller lightens the blade and balances it toward the hand for fast, controlled movement, while the ornate fittings give it the presence of a chieftain's sword. This is a real forged sword built to be handled and displayed, not a cast wall-hanger.

An honest note. This is a hand-forged interpretation inspired by the swords carried across the Norse world in the 9th and 10th centuries. We build it as a real, functional blade and a collector's centrepiece, and we frame it as the craft object it is rather than as an instrument of harm. What we care about is the steel, the fuller, the balance, and the fittings.

What Is a 9th-Century Viking Sword?

A 9th-century Viking sword is a straight, double-edged sword carried across Scandinavia and the wider Norse world during the Viking Age, roughly 800 to 1050 AD. It is defined by a broad blade with a wide central fuller, a short guard, a lobed or shaped pommel, and a grip sized for one hand. Built for the cut, it balances close to the hand for speed. This sword reinterprets that pattern as a modern hand-forged blade in 5160 spring steel, with decorated fittings in place of the plainer iron furniture of the originals.

How It Is Made

You set the spec — length, finish, edge, and any engraving you want on the blade.
A smith draws the blade from a 5160 leaf-spring billet and grinds the wide central fuller by hand.
The blade is heat-treated and oil-tempered, then the edge is hand-sharpened to a true cutting edge.
We fit the decorated guard, grip, and pommel, peen the tang, pair the scabbard, and ship worldwide tracked.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this a real, functional Viking sword?

Yes. This is a real, fully functional Viking sword, not a cast display piece. It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, full tang, oil-tempered, and sharpened to a true cutting edge before it ships. It is built to be handled and cut with, and finished cleanly enough to display as a centrepiece.

What is a 9th-century Viking sword?

A 9th-century Viking sword is a straight, double-edged sword carried across the Norse world during the Viking Age, roughly 800 to 1050 AD. It has a broad blade with a wide central fuller, a short guard, a shaped pommel, and a one-hand grip, and it is built for the cut with the balance set close to the hand. This sword reinterprets that pattern in modern 5160 spring steel.

What steel is it, and is it oil-tempered?

The blade is forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, the same alloy used in heavy-duty truck leaf springs, prized for toughness and edge retention. It is oil-tempered for a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible, shock-absorbent spine.

Is it full tang?

Yes. The tang runs the full length of the handle and is peened over the pommel, so there is no rat-tail or glued-in tang to fail. Full-tang construction is what makes the sword strong enough to handle and cut with rather than just display.

Can I change the blade length?

Yes. The standard blade is 30 inches, and you can order it shorter or longer to your spec. You can also choose the blade finish, the edge, and add engraving. Every sword is forged to the spec you select, so the size is yours to set.

What are the guard and pommel made of?

The guard and pommel are decorated brass with a gold-tone finish, fitted to a black-wrapped grip. The ornate fittings give the sword the look of a chieftain's blade, while the brass is shaped and finished by hand for each piece.

What is the difference between a Viking sword and a longsword?

A Viking sword is a one-handed, double-edged cutting sword from the Viking Age with a broad fullered blade and a short guard. A medieval longsword came later and is longer, with a two-hand grip and a more tapered blade built for both cut and thrust. This sword follows the earlier Viking-age one-hand pattern.

Does it come with a scabbard?

Yes. Every sword ships with a fitted black scabbard with gold-tone fittings to match the sword. The scabbard protects the blade for storage and display, and it is made by hand to fit the blade size you order.

Can I add a name or engraving?

Yes. You can add a name, initials, or a short message to the blade, and you can upload your own logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalized blades are forged to order, so please confirm the details before you buy.

Do you ship worldwide, and how long does it take?

Yes. We ship worldwide from Nepal by DHL or FedEx in 7 to 14 business days with tracking. In-stock specs dispatch within 2 to 3 business days; fully custom builds take roughly 4 to 6 weeks to forge first. Import and blade laws vary by country, so please check your local rules before ordering.

How do I care for the carbon steel blade?

Wipe the blade clean and dry after handling, and apply a light coat of oil before storage to keep moisture off the high-carbon steel. Store the scabbard separately in humid climates. With this basic care a 5160 blade will last for generations.

Can I order a fully bespoke version?

Yes. Beyond the options on this page, our Custom Forge service builds blades to your own drawing or specification, including the fuller, profile, and fittings. Use the Custom Forge page to send your idea and we will quote it. Lead time is typically 4 to 6 weeks.
