A Ring Pommel Chopper for the Pack
The ring at the back of this handle is the reason to buy it. It is cut from the tang itself rather than fitted on, and it does three jobs at once: it gives you somewhere to hook a finger when you need control instead of power, it takes a lanyard or a carabiner without a separate fitting, and it hangs the tool on a branch, a nail or a pack loop when you are not holding it. On a small chopper that lives outdoors rather than in a drawer, all three matter more than they would on a knife you keep in a block.
The blade is 6 inches, hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon steel, oil-quenched and tempered, in a cleaver profile with a straight edge and a squared nose. The upper part is left as it came off the anvil, hammer marks and forge scale intact, with the bevel ground bright below so the two meet in a hard line across the flat. There is a hole through the blade for hanging. The 6 inch grip is contoured rosewood on a full tang, pinned with three rivets and cut with shallow grooves under the fingers. It ships in a brown leather sheath with a studded strap.
An honest note. At 650 grams all in this is the lighter of the two compact choppers we make, and lighter means exactly what it usually means: it carries more easily and it hits less hard. Our other EDC chopper is 850 grams with a longer, heavier blade, and if your priority is splitting rather than carrying, that one does more work per stroke. This one is for the person who wants a chopper that disappears into a pack. The other honest point: forge scale is not rust protection. It is the surface the steel came off the anvil with, it looks the way it looks, and this blade needs oiling exactly like a polished one.

5160 is a high-carbon steel and it will rust if you let it, and the forge finish does not change that — scale is not a protective coating. Wipe the blade dry after use, keep it lightly oiled, and pay attention to three places a cloth drawn across the flat will skip: the hole through the blade, the inside of the ring where it meets the grip, and the cut lines of the finger grooves. If you use this on food, and most owners will, clean it promptly and dry it properly. Carbon steel is safe for food but reacts with acid, so onions, tomatoes and citrus will darken the bevel within minutes. That patina is harmless and many people encourage it, but it is not reversible without abrasive work.

What is the ring pommel for?
Three things, and it is worth knowing all of them before you decide whether you want one. First, control: hook your index or little finger through it and the tool anchors in your hand, which is what you want when you are pulling a cut toward you or working close and precisely rather than swinging. Second, retention and carry: it takes a lanyard, a cord or a carabiner directly, with no separate fitting to drill, fit or work loose. Third, hanging — on a branch, a nail, a tent pole or a pack loop, which is genuinely useful on a tool you are picking up and putting down all day at a camp. On this piece the ring is cut from the tang itself rather than attached, so it is as strong as the handle is and there is nothing to come apart.
How is this different from your other EDC chopper?
Weight, mostly, and it is a real difference rather than a marketing one. This piece is 650 grams all in with a 6 inch blade. The other is 850 grams with a 6.6 inch blade — a fifth heavier, in a package only half an inch longer. That extra mass goes into the blade, so it hits noticeably harder per stroke and splits larger rounds more easily. What you pay for it is carry weight, which you notice at the end of a long day rather than at the start. The other differences follow from that: this one has the ring pommel and finger grooves, the other has a longer grip with a diamond-carved section. If you are choosing between them, ask whether you are more likely to resent carrying it or to resent it not going through a log.
Why a cleaver profile for camp work?
Because almost everything a cleaver is good at is something you do at a camp. The straight edge meets a flat surface along its whole length, so cutting on a board, a stump or a flat rock gives you contact everywhere rather than at one point — that covers food prep, jointing and controlled splitting at once. The tall blade keeps your knuckles clear of whatever you are cutting into. The flat spine is the best batoning surface any blade shape offers. And the mass sits forward and low, so the tool does the work rather than your arm. What you give up is a point, which is a genuine loss: no drilling, no boring and no fine tip work. Most people who carry one pair it with a small knife, and the two together still weigh less than one full-size chopper.
Can I baton with it?
Yes, and it is one of the things a cleaver shape is genuinely best at. Batoning means striking the spine with a wooden billet to drive the blade through wood, and most knives are compromised for it: a curved or tapering spine gives the billet somewhere to slip off, and a thin blade wedges rather than splits. A cleaver spine is straight, square and thick along its entire length, so you get a large flat target that will not deflect a strike, and the wide blade acts as a wedge as it goes. Strike over the middle of the blade rather than out near the nose, use a wooden billet and never a steel hammer. The real constraint on this piece is size rather than strength — a 6 inch blade limits how big a round you can work through.
What is the rough finish on the blade?
Forge finish: the surface as it came off the anvil, with the hammer marks and dark scale left in place rather than ground away, and the bevel below it ground bright so the two meet in a hard line across the flat. Three honest points. It is not a coating and it is not rust protection — scale is iron oxide and this blade needs oiling exactly like a polished one, so anyone selling forge scale as protective is overstating it. It does hide working marks, which a mirror finish emphasises, so a forge-finished blade looks better after a year of use than a polished one does. And it varies: hammer marks are never twice the same, so yours will not match the photographs. If you would rather have a clean blade, we will grind and polish it throughout.
Does the ring get in the way?
Sometimes, and we would rather say so. A ring pommel projects, and anything that projects can catch — on a sheath as you draw, on a pocket edge, on brush as you move past it. It also puts a hard edge where your palm sits if you hold the tool right at the back, so a full power grip with the hand hard against the pommel is less comfortable than it would be on a rounded butt. Some people simply do not get on with them for that reason. What you get in exchange is the finger hook, the built-in lanyard point and the ability to hang the tool anywhere, and on a camp tool that is picked up and put down constantly most owners find that trade worth making. If you are unsure, our other EDC chopper has a conventional butt.
What is the hole through the blade?
A second hanging and lanyard point, and having two is more useful than it sounds. Drilled through near the spine where the steel does the least work, it lets you hang the tool blade-down from a hook or a branch, which is how you want it when it is drying after use or sitting ready by a fire. The ring at the other end hangs it handle-down, which is how you want it on a pack where the grip needs to be reachable. Between them you can hang the same tool whichever way the situation asks for. There is a small structural cost to any hole in a blade, and it is worth being straight about that, but this one sits high near the spine and well away from the edge in a blade that is thick through its whole section.
What steel is it?
5160 high-carbon spring steel, oil-quenched and tempered. It is the family of steel used for vehicle leaf springs, which is where the Nepali practice of forging blades from springs comes from, and it is chosen for toughness rather than for maximum hardness. On a chopper that is the right call twice over. A blade taking repeated impact needs to deform slightly rather than shatter, and 5160 at a working temper rolls at the edge where a harder steel would chip. And a rolled edge can be brought back with a stone in the field, where a chipped one needs a workshop. The trade-off is that it wants sharpening a little more often than a harder alloy. It is not stainless and it will rust if neglected.
How does it compare to your kukris?
It does one of the two things a kukri does, in a fraction of the package. A kukri chops by combining mass with reach and an arc, so it clears brush, takes limbs and covers ground. This chops by concentrating mass in a very short blade, so it splits, joints and processes what is already in front of you. The practical split is about your day. If you are clearing a trail or felling anything, a kukri wins and it is not close. If you are at a camp reducing wood to fire-size, preparing food and jointing game, this does the work in something you will actually carry — at 650 grams it is less than half the weight of our heavier kukris. Plenty of people own both; nobody carries both at once.
How do I sharpen it?
Easily, which is one of the quiet advantages of the shape. A straight edge with no belly and no recurve means you can lay the bevel flat on a bench stone and work along the length without rolling the blade to follow a curve, so the angle stays consistent even if you are not practised. That makes this one of the more forgiving blades in our range to maintain, and a pocket diamond stone is enough to keep it going in the field. Two specifics. Work the square nose separately with the corner of the stone or you will round it off, and it is the part of the edge that does the scraping. And keep the stone off the forge-finished upper blade, which is not an edge and will only dull your abrasive.
Is it safe to use on food?
Yes, with one thing to expect. Carbon steel is food-safe and was the standard kitchen material for most of history — stainless is the recent arrival. What carbon steel does is react with acid, so cutting onions, tomatoes, citrus or anything fermented will darken the bevel within minutes, and over time the blade develops a grey-blue patina. That patina is harmless, it is not rust, and many owners deliberately encourage it because a patinated blade resists true rusting better than a bright one. What you must do is clean and dry it promptly rather than leaving it wet or with residue on it, and never put it in a dishwasher, which will damage both the steel and the rosewood grip. If you want a blade that stays bright, this is not the steel for it.
Can I have it in a different size?
Yes, though it is worth thinking about what you would lose. The whole argument for this piece is that it chops at 12 inches overall and 650 grams, which is the combination that makes it carryable when a full-size chopper is not. Go much longer and heavier and you are into the territory our other EDC chopper already occupies, and we would point you there rather than duplicate it. Shorter is more interesting: a 5 inch version keeps the profile and the ring and becomes a genuinely pocketable camp tool, though chopping authority drops away quickly since the mass goes with the size.
