Hand-Forged Medieval Falchion Sword — Full-Tang 5160 Blade with Wheel Pommel

This is a hand-forged, fully functional medieval falchion — a broad single-edged cutting sword forged in Nepal from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, full tang, oil-tempered, and sharpened to a true cutting edge. It carries a curved clip-point blade, a straight steel crossguard, a classic wheel pommel, a black handle, and a black sheath. Every sword is made to order in your chosen length, finish, and engraving.

The standard blade is 24 inches on an 8-inch handle, for an overall length around 32 inches and a broad 2.2-inch blade. The widening belly and clipped point put the weight forward for authority in the cut, while the forged 5160 steel and full tang make it a real sword you can handle and display — not a cast wall-hanger.

An honest note. This is a modern, hand-forged interpretation of the medieval falchion, built as a real, functional blade and a collector's centrepiece. We frame it as the craft object it is rather than as an instrument of harm. What we care about is the steel, the curve of the blade, the balance, and the cut.

What Is a Falchion Sword?

A falchion is a medieval European single-edged sword with a broad, curved blade that widens toward the tip, built for powerful cutting and chopping. It pairs the cutting weight of an axe with the reach and handling of a sword, which is why it was a favourite side-arm from the 13th to the 16th century. This one is a modern hand-forged interpretation in 5160 spring steel — a functional, full-tang falchion with a curved clip point and a classic wheel pommel.

How It Is Made

You set the spec — length, finish, edge, and any engraving you want on the blade.
A smith draws the broad curved blade from a 5160 leaf-spring billet and grinds the clip-point profile.
The blade is heat-treated and oil-tempered, then polished and hand-sharpened to a true cutting edge.
We fit the steel crossguard, wheel pommel, and handle, peen the tang, pair the sheath, and ship worldwide tracked.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a falchion sword?

A falchion is a medieval European single-edged sword with a broad, curved blade that widens toward the tip, built for powerful cutting and chopping. It combines the cutting weight of an axe with the reach and handling of a sword, and it was a common side-arm from the 13th to the 16th century. This one is a modern, hand-forged interpretation in 5160 spring steel.

Is this a real, functional sword?

Yes. This is a real, fully functional falchion, not a cast display piece. It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, full tang, oil-tempered, and sharpened to a true cutting edge before it ships. It is built to be handled and cut with, and finished cleanly enough to display as a centrepiece.

What steel is it, and is it oil-tempered?

The blade is forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, the same alloy used in heavy-duty truck leaf springs, prized for toughness and edge retention. It is oil-tempered for a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible, shock-absorbent spine.

Is it full tang?

Yes. The tang runs the full length of the handle and is peened over the wheel pommel, so there is no rat-tail or glued-in tang to fail. Full-tang construction is what makes the sword strong enough to handle and cut with rather than just display.

What is a falchion good for?

The falchion is a cutter. Its broad, forward-weighted blade makes it excellent for chopping and slicing cuts, which is why cutting and test-cutting practitioners like it, and why collectors value it as a distinctive medieval sword. As a hand-forged 5160 blade, it is built to actually perform, not just hang on a wall.

Can I change the blade length?

Yes. The standard blade is 24 inches, and you can order it shorter or longer to your spec. You can also choose the blade finish, the edge, and add engraving. Every sword is forged to the spec you select, so the size is yours to set.

What are the guard and pommel?

The falchion has a straight steel crossguard and a classic medieval wheel pommel, fitted to a black handle. The steel furniture is shaped and finished by hand, and the wheel pommel helps balance the forward weight of the broad blade.

Does it come with a sheath?

Yes. Every sword ships with a black sheath to protect the blade for storage and display. It is made by hand to fit the blade size you order.

Can I add a name or engraving?

Yes. You can add a name, initials, or a short message to the blade, and you can upload your own logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalized blades are forged to order, so please confirm the details before you buy.

Is the sword sharpened on arrival?

Yes. Every blade is sharpened to a true cutting edge before it leaves the forge unless you request otherwise. It arrives ready to handle, cut, or display.

Do you ship worldwide, and how long does it take?

Yes. We ship worldwide from Nepal by DHL or FedEx in 7 to 14 business days with tracking. In-stock specs dispatch within 2 to 3 business days; fully custom builds take roughly 4 to 6 weeks to forge first. Import and blade laws vary by country, so please check your local rules before ordering.

Can I order a fully bespoke version?

Yes. Beyond the options on this page, our Custom Forge service builds blades to your own drawing or specification, including the profile, guard, and fittings. Use the Custom Forge page to send your idea and we will quote it. Lead time is typically 4 to 6 weeks.
