Hand-Forged Hunting Hanger Sword — Full-Tang 5160 Blade with Knuckle-Bow Guard and Rosewood Grip

This is a hand-forged, fully functional hunting hanger — the short sidearm carried by huntsmen, sailors, and soldiers from the 16th to the 18th centuries, forged in Nepal from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, oil-tempered, full tang, and sharpened to a true edge. It carries a broad straight blade with a long clipped false edge in a clean satin finish, a polished steel guard with a knuckle bow and downturned quillon, a shaped rosewood grip, and a fluted pommel cap, paired with a tooled brown leather scabbard. Every sword is made to order in your chosen length, finish, and engraving.

The standard blade is 22 inches on a 6.5-inch handle, for an overall length around 28.5 inches at about 1.29 kg. That is short enough to wear at the belt all day and quick in the hand, which is exactly what the hanger was built for. The oil-tempered 5160 steel and full tang make it a real working sword, not a cast wall-hanger.

An honest note. This is a modern, hand-forged hunting hanger made by our smiths in Kathmandu, built in the spirit of the historical type rather than as a museum reproduction of a specific piece. We frame it as the craft object it is rather than as an instrument of harm. What we care about is the steel, the blade profile, the knuckle-bow guard, and the balance.

What Is a Hanger?

A hanger is a short, single-edged sword worn at the belt, in wide use across Europe from roughly the 16th to the 18th centuries. It was the practical everyday sidearm: huntsmen carried it to finish and dress game, sailors used it aboard ship, and infantry wore it as a short service sword. The name comes from the way it hung from a belt hanger rather than a full scabbard rig. Hangers are typically shorter and broader than a duelling sword, often with a knuckle bow and quillon for hand protection. This one is a modern hand-forged interpretation in 5160 spring steel, built straight-bladed with a long clipped false edge.

How It Is Made

You set the spec — length, profile, finish, edge, and any engraving you want.
A smith forges the broad blade from a 5160 leaf-spring billet and cuts the clip along the back.
The blade is oil-tempered, then polished to a satin finish and hand-sharpened.
We form the guard and knuckle bow, fit the rosewood grip and pommel cap, tool the leather scabbard, and ship worldwide tracked.

In-stock specs dispatch within 2 to 3 business days; fully custom builds take roughly 4 to 6 weeks to forge before dispatch. We ship worldwide by DHL or FedEx in 7 to 14 business days, tracked. Import and blade laws vary by country, so please check your local rules before ordering.

Returns & Warranty

Every blade is backed by the Everest Forge warranty against forging and material defects. If something is wrong with your order, we will repair, replace, or refund it. Personalized and custom-engraved blades are made to order, so please confirm your spec carefully before purchase.

Care

Wipe the blade clean and dry after handling, and apply a light coat of oil before storage to protect the high-carbon steel from moisture. Keep the rosewood grip and tooled leather scabbard away from prolonged damp, and treat the leather occasionally to keep it supple. With basic care, a 5160 blade will outlast its owner.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a hanger sword?

A hanger is a short, single-edged sword worn at the belt, in wide use across Europe from roughly the 16th to the 18th centuries. It was the practical everyday sidearm — huntsmen carried it to finish and dress game, sailors used it aboard ship, and infantry wore it as a short service sword. The name comes from the belt hanger it was suspended from. This one is a modern, hand-forged interpretation in 5160 spring steel.

Is a hanger the same as a hunting sword?

They overlap closely. Hunting swords of this period were usually hangers — short, broad, single-edged belt swords — often dressed more finely for the hunt with decorated guards and grips. So a hunting hanger is a hanger used and dressed for the hunt, which is exactly what this piece is built as.

Is it medieval?

Not strictly. Hangers belong to roughly the 16th to 18th centuries, so they are post-medieval — the era of huntsmen, sailors, and early modern infantry rather than knights. The type is often listed under medieval swords because it shares the same collecting world, but if you want a genuinely medieval short sword, our crusader arming sword is the piece.

What is the clipped false edge for?

The clip is the section along the back of the blade near the tip that is ground away and sharpened, forming a false edge. It lightens the point and makes it finer and more controllable, while the broad forward part of the blade keeps the mass for cutting. On this hanger the clip is forged and ground by hand.

Is this a real, functional sword?

Yes. This is a real, fully functional hanger, not a cast display piece. It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, full tang, oil-tempered, and sharpened to a true cutting edge before it ships. It is built to be handled and cut with, and finished cleanly enough to display as a centrepiece.

What steel is it, and is it oil-tempered?

The blade is forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, the same alloy used in heavy-duty truck leaf springs, prized for toughness and edge retention. It is oil-tempered for a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible, shock-absorbent spine.

Is it full tang?

Yes. The tang runs the full length of the handle, so there is no rat-tail or glued-in tang to fail. Full-tang construction is what makes the sword strong enough to handle and cut with rather than just display.

What guard does it have?

It has a polished steel guard with a knuckle bow that runs from the guard to the pommel, and a downturned quillon on the other side. Together they protect the hand from the front and the sides, which is why this arrangement became common on hangers and hunting swords. It is formed and fitted by hand in steel.

Can I have a curved blade instead?

Yes. Historical hangers came both straight and curved, and this one is built straight with a clipped false edge. If you want the curved hanger profile, we can forge it for you through Custom Forge — tell us the curve you want when you order.

What is the handle made of?

The handle is shaped rosewood over a full tang, with a fluted metal pommel cap and the polished knuckle-bow guard. Each grip is shaped and fitted by hand, so the rosewood grain and colour vary slightly from piece to piece.

Does it come with a scabbard?

Yes. Every sword ships with a tooled brown leather scabbard with lacing, made by hand to fit the blade size you order.

Do you ship worldwide, and how long does it take?

Yes. We ship worldwide from Nepal by DHL or FedEx in 7 to 14 business days with tracking. In-stock specs dispatch within 2 to 3 business days; fully custom builds take roughly 4 to 6 weeks to forge first. Import and blade laws vary by country, so please check your local rules before ordering.
