Civil War D-Guard Bowie Knife — Hand-Forged Full-Tang 5160 Clip-Point Blade
This is a hand-forged, fully functional Civil War D-guard Bowie knife — a large clip-point fighting knife forged in Nepal from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, full tang, oil-tempered, and sharpened to a true cutting edge. It carries a long polished clip-point blade, a steel D-guard knuckle bow, black handle scales, polished metal fittings, and a black leather sheath. Every knife is made to order in your chosen length, finish, and engraving.
The standard blade is 16 inches on a 5.5-inch handle, for an overall length around 21.6 inches and a broad 2-inch blade. The forward-weighted clip point and hand guard make it a real, historically-styled fighting Bowie you can handle and display — not a cast wall-hanger.
An honest note. This is a modern, hand-forged interpretation of the Civil War era D-guard Bowie, built as a real, functional blade and a collector's centrepiece. We frame it as the craft object it is rather than as an instrument of harm. What we care about is the steel, the clip point, the guard, and the balance.

A D-guard Bowie is a large Bowie knife fitted with a D-shaped steel knuckle bow that curves from the guard to the pommel to protect the hand. It was a favourite side-arm during the American Civil War, when many were hand-forged from whatever good steel was available and carried as a heavy fighting and utility blade. This one is a modern hand-forged interpretation in 5160 spring steel — a functional, full-tang D-guard Bowie with a long clip-point blade.

What is a Civil War D-guard Bowie?
A D-guard Bowie is a large Bowie knife fitted with a D-shaped steel knuckle bow that curves from the guard to the pommel to protect the hand. It was a common side-arm during the American Civil War, often hand-forged and carried as a heavy fighting and utility blade. This one is a modern, hand-forged interpretation in 5160 spring steel.
Is this a real, functional knife?
Yes. This is a real, fully functional Bowie, not a cast display piece. It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, full tang, oil-tempered, and sharpened to a true cutting edge before it ships. It is built to be handled and cut with, and finished cleanly enough to display as a centrepiece.
What steel is it, and is it oil-tempered?
The blade is forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, the same alloy used in heavy-duty truck leaf springs, prized for toughness and edge retention. It is oil-tempered for a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible, shock-absorbent spine.
Is it full tang?
Yes. The tang runs the full length of the handle between the scales, so there is no rat-tail or glued-in tang to fail. Full-tang construction is what makes the knife strong enough to handle and cut with rather than just display.
What does the D-guard do?
The D-guard is the D-shaped steel knuckle bow that runs from the guard to the pommel. It protects the hand and knuckles, and it is the feature that defines this style of Civil War Bowie. On this knife it is formed and fitted by hand in steel.
Can I change the blade length?
Yes. The standard blade is 16 inches, and you can order it shorter or longer to your spec. You can also choose the blade finish, the edge, and add engraving. Every knife is forged to the spec you select, so the size is yours to set.
What is the handle made of?
The handle has black scales fitted over a full tang, with polished metal fittings and the steel D-guard. Each handle is shaped and fitted by hand for a secure grip.
Does it come with a sheath?
Yes. Every knife ships with a black leather sheath to protect the blade for storage and carry. It is made by hand to fit the blade size you order.
Can I add a name or engraving?
Yes. You can add a name, initials, or a short message to the blade, and you can upload your own logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalized blades are forged to order, so please confirm the details before you buy.
Is the knife sharpened on arrival?
Yes. Every blade is sharpened to a true cutting edge before it leaves the forge unless you request otherwise. It arrives ready to handle, cut, or display.
Do you ship worldwide, and how long does it take?
Yes. We ship worldwide from Nepal by DHL or FedEx in 7 to 14 business days with tracking. In-stock specs dispatch within 2 to 3 business days; fully custom builds take roughly 4 to 6 weeks to forge first. Import and blade laws vary by country, so please check your local rules before ordering.
Can I order a fully bespoke version?
Yes. Beyond the options on this page, our Custom Forge service builds blades to your own drawing or specification, including the profile, guard, and handle. Use the Custom Forge page to send your idea and we will quote it. Lead time is typically 4 to 6 weeks.
