Battle-Ready 5160 Steel 6 Blade Lengths · 4 Finishes Free Engraving 6 Scabbard Colors DHL / FedEx Worldwide

This is the Greek Kopis sword for sale at the heart of the Everest Forge Kopis range — our most-ordered Kopis weapon and the blade most buyers searching for an ancient Greek sword find first. Every Kopis we ship is built to order: you pick the blade length, the finish, the handle wood, the scabbard leather color, and what gets engraved on the blade. Hand-hammered from a single billet of 5160 leaf-spring carbon steel, water-tempered, edge-finished by hand. The blade is the same recurved profile carried by Greek hoplites and Macedonian cavalry from the 4th century BC onwards — single-edged, forward-curved, heavy in the belly, optimized for the chopping arc.

Customize Your Kopis — Built to Order, Made to Spec

Every Kopis we forge is made to order, not pulled from a warehouse shelf. Use the options on this product page to specify exactly the blade you want. Here's what you can configure:

01

03

Handle Material

Two handle woods — Rosewood for the classical dark-grained look and proven grip, or White-wood (Sadhan) for a lighter, contrasting handle that ages beautifully. Both are full-tang riveted by hand at our Nepal workshop.

What Is a Kopis Sword?

The Kopis is an ancient Greek single-edged sword with a distinctive forward-curving blade. Used primarily by Greek cavalry and hoplite infantry from roughly the 6th to 4th century BC, the Kopis blade earned its battlefield reputation for cleaving through helmets, shields, and armor where straight thrusting swords like the Xiphos could not. The forward curve concentrates striking force at the belly of the blade — the same geometric principle later seen in the Iberian falcata, the Nepalese kukri, and the Ottoman yatagan.

If you're searching for a kopis weapon, a kopis blade, a kopis dagger or kopis knife variant, or the classical plural form kopides — they all refer to this same recurved chopping sword. The plural kopides appears in classical Greek sources describing Macedonian cavalry equipment under Alexander the Great. Note: the Kopis is sometimes confused online with the older Egyptian Khopesh — they are different swords from different cultures, separated by roughly a thousand years. See the comparison section below for the distinction.

Kopis Length, Size, and Weight Explained

Historical Kopis sword length varied with role. Cavalry versions extended to 26 inches or more for reach from horseback; infantry sidearms typically ran 16 to 22 inches. This Everest Forge Kopis sits at 21 inches of blade length (28 inches overall) — the most historically common kopis size for both mounted and foot use. The 800-gram (2 lb) weight gives the forward curve enough authority to chop, while remaining nimble enough for a one-handed grip.

Smaller kopis knife and kopis dagger variants did exist historically, often as utility blades or close-quarter sidearms. If you want a shorter Kopis, see our full Kopis range for alternative sizes, or commission a custom blade length through the custom forge process.

Greek Kopis vs Khopesh — What's the Difference?

This product is listed as both a Greek Kopis and a Khopesh because modern English usage blurs the two. Strictly speaking:

TermPeriod / OriginBlade Profile
KopisAncient Greek, 6th-4th century BCForward-curving, single-edged, sword-length
Khopesh (historical)Egyptian / Near Eastern Bronze Age, c.2500-1300 BCSickle-hooked, single-edged, often shorter
Khopesh (modern usage)Often used loosely for any forward-curved Greek/Near Eastern swordVariable — context-dependent

This Everest Forge blade is the Greek Kopis form — the classical Hellenistic recurved sword — listed under both terms because that's what buyers actually search. If you want the strict Egyptian sickle-sword form, it falls outside this product range. For the classical Greek family context including the straight Xiphos companion sword, see our Greek Xiphos history blog or shop the matching Museum Reproduction Xiphos.

Kopis vs Xiphos — The Greek Hoplite Loadout

The classical Greek hoplite often carried both blades. The Xiphos was the primary thrusting sword — short, straight, leaf-bladed, double-edged — drawn when the spear broke. The Kopis was the chopping sidearm and cavalry sword, drawn when the situation called for cleaving force rather than the precise thrust. Together they covered the full close-combat range. We forge both to the same standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this Kopis battle-ready or display only?

This Kopis is fully battle-ready. The blade is 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, full-tang, water-tempered, and pre-sharpened at the forge. It will cut, chop, and hold an edge under real use. Every blade we forge meets our battle-ready standard — these are functional Greek swords built for use, not wall replicas.

What is the difference between a Kopis and a Khopesh?

Historically the two terms refer to different blades. The Kopis is the classical Greek forward-curved sword used from roughly the 6th to 4th century BC. The Khopesh (sometimes spelled khepesh) is the Egyptian and Near Eastern Bronze Age sickle-sword that predates the Greek Kopis by roughly a thousand years and has a more pronounced hooked profile. In modern English usage the two terms are often used interchangeably for any forward-curving ancient Near Eastern or Greek sword, which is why this product is listed under both names. This blade is the classical Greek Kopis form.

How long is this Kopis sword and can I change the blade length?

The standard blade is 20 inches. You can customize the blade length to 16, 18, 20, 22, 24, or 26 inches using the Blade Length option on this product page — shorter lengths reduce the price slightly, longer lengths add to it. The handle adds 7 inches (17.78 cm) on top of whichever blade length you pick. For reference, 16-18" suits close-quarter and bushcraft use; 20-22" is the classical hoplite Kopis size; 24-26" extends into Macedonian cavalry-sword territory. If you need a length outside this range, it's available through the custom forge process.

How much does this Kopis weigh?

Approximately 900 grams at the standard 20-inch blade configuration. Weight varies with your chosen blade length and finish — shorter blades and lighter finishes drop weight slightly, longer blades add weight. The weight is forward-balanced, with most of the mass in the belly of the curved blade. That gives the Kopis its chopping authority while keeping the grip end light for a controlled swing. The balance point falls roughly 6 inches forward of the guard.

What steel is the blade?

5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel — the same alloy used for heavy-duty vehicle suspension springs. It is tough, springy, and holds an edge well. We source 5160 stock, then hammer-forge the blade from a single billet (never welded or laminated for this design), water-temper to optimum hardness, and hand-finish the edge. This is the same steel used across our battle-ready sword range.

Can I get free Greek lettering, my name, or a custom logo engraved on the blade?

Yes — every Kopis includes free text engraving AND a custom logo / photo upload option. There are two engraving fields on this product page:

  • Personalize Your Blade — free-form text for names, initials, Greek lettering (Molon Labe and similar mottos rendered in historically accurate Greek letter forms), dates, mottos, or any text you specify
  • Custom Logo & Photo Engraving — upload your own image file (family crest, unit insignia, brand logo, commemorative design) and we engrave it directly onto the blade

Both engraving methods are hand-applied during the finishing stage in Nepal. See our personalized blades page for examples of past work.

How long does it take to forge and ship?

Every Kopis is forged-to-order. Production typically takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on engraving complexity and current workshop queue. After forging we ship worldwide with tracked, insured delivery. See our shipping and returns policy for country-specific delivery estimates.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes — we ship worldwide. Our largest markets are the United States, Australia, the Netherlands, Greece, the United Kingdom, and Canada, but we deliver to most countries. Some jurisdictions have restrictions on sword imports — we'll advise during order processing if any issue arises with your destination, and refund in full if delivery isn't possible.

What's covered by the warranty?

Every blade we forge carries a lifetime craftsmanship warranty. If the blade fails due to a forging, tempering, or construction defect, we repair or replace it. Wear from use, intentional damage, and modification by third parties are not covered. See the full warranty and returns policy for details.

Can I use this Kopis for HEMA, reenactment, or test cutting?

This Kopis is suitable for test cutting (tatami, water bottles, light bamboo) and for historical reenactment display. For full-contact HEMA sparring or HMB combat, you should use a blunt training blade rather than a sharpened battle-ready blade — we can forge a blunt training version on request through the custom forge process. For static reenactment kit and presentation use, the standard battle-ready version is ideal.

Is this a Macedonian or Spartan Kopis?

The 21-inch blade length suits both. Macedonian cavalry under Alexander the Great carried Kopis swords of this approximate length; Spartan and broader Greek hoplites carried Kopides (the Greek plural) as chopping sidearms alongside the Xiphos. If you want the longest Macedonian-scale Kopis, simply select 24 or 26 inches in the Blade Length option above — that pushes this same blade into Macedonian cavalry-sword territory at lower cost than commissioning a separate sword.
