Survival Spear — Hand-Forged Large Hunting Spear in 5160 Steel
The Everest Forge Survival Spear is our large hand-forged hunting and survival spear, built for people who want a real, serious spear rather than a cast tactical toy. The broad, sword-like leaf blade runs to a strong piercing point with a long fuller ground down its centre, giving it the reach and authority of a short sword on a spear handle. It rides on a long, pinned rosewood handle finished with a steel ring pommel, and comes complete with a hand-stitched leather scabbard. Forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck springs, water-tempered, and full-tang from point to pommel, it is genuine working steel — and at 32 inches with a 12-inch blade, it is the largest spear in our standard range.
This is the survival spear done properly. Most spears sold as survival or tactical gear are cast from stainless steel on a fiberglass or break-down handle — fine to look at, but not something you would stake your safety on. The Survival Spear is hand-forged the way a real working blade should be: tough, sharp, full-tang, and built to take abuse. It is made for survivalists and bushcrafters, big-game hunters, serious collectors, and anyone who wants the biggest, most capable spear we make. Like the rest of our work, it is forged to your spec — five blade lengths up to 18 inches, four finishes, two handle woods, six scabbard colours, and free engraving, all included.
Honest note: Even as our largest spear, this is a 32-inch hand spear, not a six-foot pole spear on a full shaft. It is built for thrusting, field use, hunting, and display. If you want a full-length pole version, we forge those as a custom build.

Forged, Not Cast — A Survival Spear Built to Last
Walk through the survival-spear market and you will find the same thing again and again: blades cast from 2Cr13 stainless steel, bolted to fiberglass or break-down handles, and sold as tactical survival gear. They look the part, but a cast stainless head on a hollow handle is not what you want when a spear actually has to perform. The Survival Spear is the opposite in every way that matters.
It is forged the same way as our working blades: a bar of 5160 spring steel hammered to shape by hand, water-tempered so the edge runs hard while the spine stays springy, and full-tang so the steel runs unbroken from the point through to the ring pommel. There is no joint to fail, no casting to crack. It is one solid piece of real, proven steel — the kind of spear that has kept people fed and safe for as long as spears have existed. If survival means relying on your gear, this is gear you can rely on.
The Large Blade & Ring Pommel
This is the biggest spear we make as standard, and it earns the name. The broad leaf blade is closer to a short sword than a small spearhead — wide enough to cut as well as pierce, with a long ground fuller running down its centre that lightens the blade and stiffens it without sacrificing strength. Sized up to 16 or 18 inches, it becomes a genuine large-blade spear with the reach and presence to match.
The long rosewood handle balances that big blade in the hand, and the steel ring pommel at the butt gives a clean finish, a natural stop for the grip, and a point to attach a lanyard or cord for retention in the field. It is an original Everest Forge design — purposeful, large, and built around real use rather than decoration.
Why Survivalists, Hunters & Collectors Choose This Spear
It is forged, not cast. Full-tang 5160 spring steel, water-tempered and sharpened — real working steel, not the cast 2Cr13 stainless used in most survival spears.
It is the large one. A 32-inch spear with a broad, sword-like 12-inch blade as standard, and the option to go all the way to an 18-inch blade — by far the biggest in our range.
It arrives complete and solid. One forged blade, a long pinned rosewood handle with a ring pommel, and a fitted leather scabbard — no joints, no break-down shaft, nothing to fail.
Total customisation is included, not upsold. Five blade lengths, four finishes, two handle woods, six scabbard colours, and free engraving — all part of the standard build.
It is proven and trusted. This is one of our most-reviewed spears, with verified five-star reviews from real buyers.

How It's Made
01
Steel Selection
We start with 5160 high-carbon leaf spring steel reclaimed from truck springs — tough, springy, and proven for impact.
02
Hand Forging
The bar is heated and hammered to shape by hand, drawing out the large leaf blade and aligning the grain for strength.
03
Heat Treatment
The blade is water-tempered to set a hard cutting edge backed by a flexible spine that absorbs shock instead of snapping.
04
Hand Finishing
The long fuller is ground, your finish is applied, the rosewood handle and steel ring pommel are fitted, and a leather scabbard is stitched to match.

Care & Maintenance
After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil), paying attention to the long fuller.
Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard. Display stand or wall mount recommended.
Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.
Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.
Handle care: Treat the rosewood occasionally with a little wood oil to keep it from drying out.

How is this different from cast stainless survival spears?
Most spears marketed as survival or tactical gear are cast from 2Cr13 stainless steel and mounted on fiberglass or break-down handles. The Survival Spear is fully hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon spring steel, water-tempered, full-tang, and sharpened — one solid piece with no joints to fail and no casting to crack. It is built to be relied on, not just to look the part.
How big is it, exactly?
As standard it is 32 inches overall — a 12-inch broad leaf blade on a 20-inch rosewood handle — which makes it the largest spear in our standard range. You can size the blade up to 16 or 18 inches for an even larger spear, or down to 10 inches if you prefer something more compact.
Is this a flimsy break-down survival spear?
No. It is a single, solid, full-tang spear — not a break-down or screw-together design. There is no joint or coupler in the handle, which is exactly what gives it its strength. If you want a take-apart travel version, contact us about a custom build instead.
What is the groove down the blade — a fuller or a cut-out?
It is a fuller — a long groove ground into the solid steel, not a cut-through opening. It lightens and stiffens the large blade while keeping it full and strong on either side. It is a traditional feature of big working and fighting blades.
What is the ring pommel for?
The steel ring at the butt of the handle gives a clean finish to the grip, acts as a natural stop for your hand, and provides a point to attach a lanyard or cord — useful for retention in the field. It also makes the spear easy to hang for display.
Is it functional, or just for display?
It is fully functional. The full-tang, water-tempered 5160 construction and sharpened blade are built for real use — thrusting, field and survival tasks, and hunting where legal — as well as display. It is a working spear first.
How is it different from your Boar Spear and Sword Spear?
The Survival Spear is the large one — a big, broad survival and hunting spear with the widest length range, up to an 18-inch blade. The Boar Spear is a compact short hunting spear, and the Sword Spear is a gladius-style war spear. Choose the Survival Spear if you want the biggest, most capable forged spear we make.
How customisable is it?
Highly. You can choose from five blade lengths (10 to 18 inches), four blade finishes, two handle woods, and six scabbard colours, plus add free engraving or upload your own logo or artwork. Every standard option is included in the price.
Is the blade sharpened, and can I get it unsharpened?
It ships hand-sharpened and ready to use. If you would prefer a display, unsharpened edge that is safer for a home or office display, note it in your order or message us before we forge and we will finish it that way at no extra charge.
Can I have my name, a logo, or a photo engraved on it?
Yes. Free engraving of a name, initials, date, or short message is included, and you can also upload a logo, monogram, or artwork for custom photo and logo engraving on the blade. It is a popular way to personalise a survival piece or create a unique gift.
How long does it take to make and ship?
Each spear is hand-forged to order, with a production time of about 3 to 5 business days. It then ships worldwide via DHL Express or FedEx with full tracking, typically 5 to 10 business days in transit, roughly 8 to 15 business days from order to delivery.
What is your return and warranty policy?
Standard configurations carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition. Custom configurations such as custom length, finish, handle wood, or engraving are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Every spear is backed by a 6-month limited warranty against manufacturing defects in materials and workmanship.
