Wood Hilt Celtic Sword — Hand-Forged La Tène Blade with a Carved All-Wood Hilt

The Everest Forge Wood Hilt Celtic Sword is a hand-forged tribute to the long, straight slashing swords of the La Tène culture — the Iron Age Celtic blades carried across Gaul and ancient Europe from roughly 450 BC to the Roman conquest. What sets this one apart is the hilt: the guard, grip and pommel are all carved from wood, with slim brass collar accents, for a warm, organic look that no metal-furniture sword can match. Hand-forged in Kathmandu by Nepalese master smiths from 5160 high carbon spring steel (recycled truck leaf-spring stock), water-tempered, full-tang. A 25-inch straight double-edge blade with an 8-inch wooden grip, carried in a leather-wrapped wooden scabbard. Available in seven blade lengths from 18 to 30 inches.

This isn't a wall-hanger. It's a real functional sword built to the same standards as our combat-grade gladii and kukris — hand-forged 5160 spring steel, water-quenched, full-tang, sharpened to a working edge. The all-wood hilt gives it a clean, ancient character — the look of a blade carved and fitted entirely by hand — while the long blade keeps real reach and cutting power. Whether you are building an ancient-European arms collection, kitting out for Iron Age reenactment, or simply want a Celtic sword with genuine handmade soul, the Wood Hilt Celtic Sword delivers the look of the La Tène era and real-world performance.

Note: This is a historically inspired original Everest Forge design, not an exact museum reproduction of any single excavated piece. Slight variations in weight, dimensions, grain, or finish may occur due to the handmade nature of the item and the natural wood hilt. It is live, sharpened, full-tang steel intended for collecting, display, and cutting practice — not for edge-on-edge contact sparring or LARP.

An All-Wood Hilt on a Celtic Iron Age Blade

The La Tène culture gave Iron Age Europe its signature weapon: a long, straight, double-edged sword built to slash from horseback and in open formation. The Gaulish and Gallic warriors who carried such blades ranged from the Atlantic to Central Europe, and many of their swords were finished with organic materials — wood, horn and bone — rather than the metal furniture of later eras.

This sword leans into that tradition. The whole hilt is shaped from wood: a carved wooden guard at the blade's shoulder, a comfortable wooden grip, and a sculpted wooden pommel, joined by slim brass collars. It is the answer for anyone searching for a celtic sword hilt, a wooden hilt, or a Celtic sword handle that looks hand-carved rather than machined. The blade itself is faithful to the La Tène form — straight and double-edged, built to cut, not the leaf-shaped blade of the earlier Bronze Age.

Our hand-forged version honours that craftsmanship rather than copying a museum cast. The 25-inch standard blade gives it real reach and weight, while remaining a fully functional 5160 spring steel sword.

Why This Wood Hilt Celtic Sword Stands Apart

Carved All-Wood Hilt

Guard, grip and pommel are all shaped from wood with slim brass collars — a warm, organic hilt with no cast-metal furniture.

Real Hand Forging

Heated in a coal forge and hammered on the anvil by Nepalese master smiths — not stamped, cast, or mass-produced.

5160 Spring Steel

Recycled truck leaf-spring stock — the same high carbon steel professional bladesmiths use for combat-grade swords. Water-tempered.

Full-Tang Construction

A single piece of steel runs through the wooden hilt — no welded joints to fail under stress.

7 Blade Lengths

Choose from 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, or 30 inches. Match your purpose — display, reenactment, or cutting practice.

Free Engraving

Add your name, initials, a date, or Celtic-style motifs to the blade. Included at no extra charge.

Hand-Forged Sword vs Decorative Wall-Hanger

Search for a Celtic sword online and you will find two very different types of product:

Type 1: mass-produced decorative replicas. Stamped or cast stainless steel, hollow or rat-tail tangs, plastic or resin handles, no real edge, no customisation. They look like display pieces but will not stand up to real use.

Type 2 (this one): a genuine hand-forged sword in real 5160 spring steel, full-tang, water-tempered, with a hilt carved from real wood and customisable across seven blade lengths. Built to the same standards as our combat-grade Roman gladii and Nepalese kukris, forged by Nepalese master smiths and made to order.

The difference is fundamental: this is a real sword, not a decoration. Cared for properly, it will outlast any wall-hanger replica by decades.

Care & Maintenance

After every use: wipe the blade clean and dry, then apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil).

Wood hilt: keep the wooden guard, grip and pommel away from prolonged damp. An occasional wipe with a little wood oil or beeswax will keep the wood from drying out and preserve its finish.

Storage: store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage inside the leather scabbard. A display stand or wall mount is recommended.

Rust spots: light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and is easily removed with very fine steel wool (grade 0000) and a few drops of oil.

Sharpening: use a quality whetstone at 22 to 25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Wood Hilt Celtic Sword?

It is a hand-forged La Tène-style sword from the Celtic Iron Age tradition — a long, straight, double-edged slashing blade fitted with a hilt carved entirely from wood, with guard, grip and pommel all in wood. The standard build is 25 inches in 5160 spring steel, an original Everest Forge design inspired by the warriors of ancient Europe.

Is the hilt really all wood?

Yes. The guard, grip and pommel are all carved from wood, joined by slim brass collars, rather than the cast-metal furniture of many later swords. The standard wood is rosewood, and you can also choose white-wood (sadhan) or horn from the handle options.

Is the Wood Hilt Celtic Sword a real, functional sword?

Yes. It is live, full-tang, sharpened steel, water-quenched and tempered for a working edge, suited to collecting, display, and cutting practice. It is not designed for edge-on-edge contact sparring or LARP, where a blunt training blade is the right choice — and a blunt display edge is available at no extra charge.

Were La Tène swords curved?

No. The classic La Tène sword is long and straight with parallel edges, built to cut. Curved and leaf-shaped blades belong to other traditions — the leaf shape to the earlier Bronze Age. This sword follows the true straight La Tène form.

What steel is the blade forged from?

The blade is forged from reclaimed 5160 high carbon spring steel — the same tough, resilient steel once used in vehicle leaf springs. It is well suited to a functional slashing sword that needs to take an edge and absorb impact.

What blade lengths can I order?

The standard build is 25 inches, and the length menu offers 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, and 30 inches. Choose the size that suits your reach, your cutting needs, or your display space.

What blade finishes are available?

You can choose Satin, Polished or Mirror, Raw or Forge, or Blacked or Coated. Satin is the everyday classic, polished gives a bright sheen, raw keeps the forged texture, and blacked adds a dark coated finish.

How do I care for the wooden hilt?

Keep the wooden guard, grip and pommel away from prolonged damp, and wipe them occasionally with a little wood oil or beeswax to stop the wood drying out. Treated this way, the carved wood hilt will keep its finish for years.

Does it come with a scabbard?

Yes. Each sword ships with a fitted scabbard — a wooden core wrapped in leather — available in six colours. It holds the blade securely for storage and display.

Can I personalise or engrave the sword?

Yes. You can add a name, initials, a date, or a short motto, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Standard engraving is included at no extra charge.

How heavy is the sword?

The standard 25-inch build weighs approximately 950 grams. As every sword is handcrafted, the exact weight varies slightly from piece to piece.

How is the sword shipped?

It ships worldwide from our forge in Kathmandu with full tracking on a DDP basis, meaning duties and taxes are prepaid before it leaves Nepal. You receive your sword with nothing further to pay on delivery.
