Hand-Forged Viking Sword — "Northern Lights" with Polished 5160 Blade, Copper Fittings and Blue Leather-Wrapped Hilt
The Northern Lights is a hand-forged Viking sword — an original Everest Forge interpretation of a classic Norse straight blade, made in Kathmandu, Nepal from 5160 high carbon spring steel and oil-tempered for durability. 46 inches overall: a 36-inch polished double-edged blade with a 10-inch blue leather-wrapped grip, warm copper guard and pommel, and a matching blue leather scabbard. A bold display and collection sword with a personal, artistic character. Customise the blade length, blade finish, handle wrap colour and scabbard colour, with free personalisation and engraving. Worldwide shipping via DHL Express & FedEx International. 30-day satisfaction guarantee. 6-month warranty.
The Viking sword stands among the most iconic blades in European history — the straight, double-edged sword of the Norse and Migration-era warrior, carried from the fjords of Scandinavia to the edges of the known world. Our Northern Lights sword draws on that lineage with a clean, polished blade and warm copper fittings, then sets itself apart with a deep-blue leather hilt and scabbard that give the whole piece the cool, luminous character of an aurora over a winter sky.
This Everest Forge Viking sword is hand-forged in our Kathmandu workshop from 5160 high carbon spring steel and oil-tempered for strength and durability. The 36-inch blade follows a strong, straight Viking profile with a polished finish and a central fuller — kept clean and simple, giving the sword an elegant historical presence without heavy decoration. Copper is used for the guard and pommel, a warm contrast against the bright blade and the cool blue leather of the grip and scabbard.
This is an original Everest Forge design, a custom-coloured interpretation of the Norse style rather than a licensed replica of any specific historical sword. It is built around a rat-tail tang and finished as a bold display, collection and gift piece — well suited to display, cosplay and reenactment dress. It is not intended for contact sparring, heavy cutting, or LARP. Because each piece is hand-finished, the blue tones vary slightly, making every Northern Lights sword one of a kind.

Customise This Viking Sword →The Viking Sword in Norse Heritage
For the Norse, the sword was the most prized of weapons — more valuable than axe or spear, often named, inherited, and buried with its owner. The classic Viking-age sword was straight and double-edged, built for the cut, with a broad fuller running down the blade to lighten it without sacrificing strength. A short, sturdy guard and a heavy pommel balanced the blade back toward the hand, giving it the lively, cut-ready feel that made it so effective.
The Northern Lights sword honours that form while wearing a colour story all its own. Where a traditional Viking sword might be dressed in iron and leather, ours pairs a bright polished blade and warm copper fittings with deep-blue leather — a contrast that turns a historical silhouette into a striking modern display piece. It sits naturally alongside the rest of our Viking & Medieval swords collection.
What Makes This Hand-Forged Viking Sword Different
Most affordable Viking swords fall into two camps: stamped stainless wall-hangers with cast pommels, or plain production blades with no character beyond the basic Norse shape. The Northern Lights sits apart from both — a hand-forged blade with a deliberate, artistic colour identity that no factory line offers.
The blade is hand-forged from 5160 high carbon spring steel and oil-tempered for durability, then polished to a clean, bright finish and cut with a central fuller in the traditional way. The guard and pommel are turned from copper for that warm, distinctive contrast, and the grip is wrapped in deep-blue leather to match the scabbard. It is built as a bold display and collection sword — an eye-catching centrepiece rather than a sparring tool.
It is offered at the most accessible price in its range for a hand-forged, custom-coloured Viking sword of this size — and every customisation is included rather than billed as an upcharge on the page. For collectors who want a Norse blade with genuine visual personality, the Northern Lights delivers something the mass market simply doesn't. Customise Your Northern Lights Viking Sword
Every Northern Lights sword is hand-forged to order in our Kathmandu workshop. Select your options on this page and specify any extra details in the order notes at checkout.
Blade Finishing
Choose the surface character of your blade — a clean satin finish for an understated historical look, a bright polished / mirror finish (the signature Northern Lights look) that plays against the copper and blue, or a darker blacked / coated finish for a moodier presence.
Blade Length
The standard Northern Lights carries a 36-inch blade for a full, commanding Viking sword. Prefer something shorter and easier to display or handle? Select a shorter blade length down to 24 inches — sized to the look and balance you want.
Handle Wrap Colour
The grip is wrapped in blue leather as standard — the heart of the Northern Lights look. You can also choose black, brown, red, yellow or green leather to recolour the hilt to your own taste.
Scabbard Colour
Your sword ships with a matching blue leather scabbard by default. Choose a different colour — black, brown, yellow, red or green — to match or contrast the hilt and suit your display.
Free Personalisation & Engraving
Add a name, initials, runes or a short message to make the sword your own, or upload a custom logo or photo for bespoke engraving. A personalised Northern Lights sword makes a striking gift for a Norse-history enthusiast or a milestone occasion.
Variant or Custom Build
Want a fully bespoke Viking sword — different fittings, a full-tang battle build, or a particular blade geometry? Use our Custom Forge service and our smiths will forge it from scratch. Explore more Norse blades in our Viking & Medieval swords range.

Shipping. Worldwide via DHL Express and FedEx International with full tracking. Transit time 5–10 business days depending on country. Total time from order to delivery is typically 8–15 business days. Some countries restrict the import of swords and long fixed blades — check local laws before ordering.

Warranty. 6-month craftsmanship warranty against forging defects, fitting separation, or scabbard failure under normal display and handling use. This is a rat-tail-tang display and collection sword — edge damage from misuse, rust from neglect, contact sparring, heavy cutting and damage from impacts are not covered. Full terms in our FAQ page.
Care & Maintenance
Oil the blade regularly. 5160 carbon steel will surface-rust if neglected. Wipe the blade with mineral oil, gun oil, or food-grade camellia oil after handling and periodically during storage. The 36-inch blade has a lot of surface area — oil the full length.
Care for the leather and copper. Condition the blue leather grip and scabbard with leather balm or beeswax every few months to prevent drying and keep the colour rich. Copper naturally develops a patina over time; a gentle metal polish restores the bright finish if you prefer it shiny.
Handle as a display sword. This is a rat-tail-tang piece built for display, collection and dress use. Enjoy it as a centrepiece and for light handling, but do not use it for cutting, sparring or hard impact.
Store thoughtfully. Do not store the blade sealed inside a damp scabbard for long periods. For long-term storage, keep the sword lightly oiled and the scabbard somewhere dry and ventilated, out of prolonged direct sun.

Customise This Viking Sword → Custom Forge a Variant →Frequently Asked Questions
What is the Northern Lights Viking sword?
It is a hand-forged Viking sword and an original Everest Forge design — a custom-coloured interpretation of the classic Norse straight blade. It pairs a polished 5160 spring steel blade and warm copper fittings with a deep-blue leather grip and scabbard, giving it the aurora-inspired look that names it. It is built as a bold display, collection and gift piece.
Is this a battle-ready sword or a display piece?
It is built as a display and collection sword. The blade is hand-forged 5160 oil-tempered steel, but it is built around a rat-tail tang and finished as a display, cosplay and reenactment-dress piece — not for contact sparring, heavy cutting or LARP. If you want a full-tang battle build of this design, we can forge one through our Custom Forge service.
What does "rat-tail tang" mean for how I use it?
A rat-tail tang is a narrowed tang suited to display and light handling rather than hard impact. It keeps the sword beautifully balanced for display and dress use. For chopping, cutting or sparring, a full-tang construction is required — available as a custom build.
What steel is used, and how is it heat-treated?
The blade is hand-forged from 5160 high carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck leaf springs, and oil-tempered for strength and durability. The blade carries a central fuller in the traditional Viking style and is polished to a clean, bright finish.
Are the guard and pommel really copper?
Yes — the guard and pommel are made of copper, chosen for the warm contrast they create against the bright polished blade and the cool blue leather of the hilt and scabbard. Copper develops a natural patina over time, which can be polished back to a bright finish if you prefer.
Can I change the handle wrap and scabbard colours?
Yes. Both the handle wrap and the scabbard come in blue leather as standard — the signature Northern Lights look — but you can choose black, brown, red, yellow or green leather for either, mixing and matching to suit your display.
Can I change the blade length?
Yes. The standard blade is 36 inches for a full, commanding Viking sword, but you can select a shorter length down to 24 inches if you prefer something easier to display or handle. For lengths beyond the listed options, use our Custom Forge service.
Does it come sharpened?
As a display and collection sword it can be supplied with a sharpened or an unsharpened display edge — just note your preference in the order notes. For safe display, cosplay and reenactment use, many buyers choose the display edge.
Can I have it engraved or personalised?
Yes. You can add a name, initials, runes or a short message, or upload a custom logo or photo for bespoke engraving. Personalisation is included free and makes the Northern Lights a memorable gift.
Will my sword look exactly like the photos?
Very close, but not identical. Because each piece is hand-forged and hand-finished, the blue leather tones and the copper patina vary slightly from one sword to the next — which means every Northern Lights sword is genuinely one of a kind.
How is it shipped, and how long does it take?
We ship worldwide by tracked DHL Express or FedEx International from Kathmandu. Forging takes 3–5 business days, engraving may add 2–3 days, and international delivery takes 5–10 business days — typically 8–15 business days from order to delivery. Some countries restrict sword imports, so check local laws first.
Is this an official replica of a specific historical Viking sword?
No. It is an original Everest Forge design inspired by the Norse straight-sword tradition, not a licensed copy of any particular museum piece. The custom blue-and-copper colour story is our own. Each one is individually made, so small natural variations are part of its handmade character.
