The Villain's Blade from Camelot — Hand-Forged in Nepal
The Sir Malagant Sword is a hand-forged 24-inch replica of the iconic villain's blade carried by Ben Cross in the 1995 Sean Connery and Richard Gere film First Knight. As Sir Malagant — the rebel Knight of the Round Table who turns against King Arthur — Cross wielded this distinctive crescent-cut sword throughout the film, most memorably in the climactic battle at Camelot where Lancelot ultimately strikes him down with King Arthur's fallen blade.
The film's prop department gave Sir Malagant a sword that broke from standard Arthurian convention: aggressive crescent shapes cut out of the blade, golden crossguard and pommel painted to match, and a leather-wrapped grip. The result — a particularly draconian-feeling weapon that visually marked Malagant as the dangerous outsider in Arthur's brotherhood. Three decades later, that crescent-cut profile remains one of the most recognisable medieval-fantasy swords in cinema, and the most-requested First Knight replica.
What Makes This Sir Malagant Sword Different
Most "Sir Malagant sword" replicas online fall into two camps: aluminium movie props from auction houses (the original Ben Cross hero sword sells for £4,000+ when available), and 3D-printed cosplay versions made from plastic. The Everest Forge Sir Malagant Sword is neither — it is a hand-forged, full-tang, working steel blade built to film-accurate proportions.
- 5160 high-carbon spring steel blade — recycled from truck leaf springs. Tough, flexible, takes a real working edge. Same steel used across our battle-ready Arthurian and historical swords.
- The signature crescent-cut blade design — the distinctive cut-out shapes that define Sir Malagant's sword in the film, hand-cut and finished into our blade rather than stamped or laser-cut.
- Long ribbed ricasso section — the unsharpened upper portion of the blade where Malagant's hand grips for the half-sword work in the film's combat scenes. Faithfully reproduced.
- Sharply pointed thrusting tip — Malagant's sword is a duelling weapon, not a chopper. The geometry emphasises piercing power, exactly as designed for the Lancelot fight.
- Full-tang construction — single continuous piece of steel from tip to pommel. Steel front guard. Real working sword build.
- Rosewood handle wrapped in leather — the original prop combines the dark wood core with a leather wrap exterior. Same on ours, with your choice of leather wrap colour.
- Hand-forged in Kathmandu, Nepal — by master smiths working in the same forges that produce our LOTR, Predator, and Arthurian blades. Each sword carries small hand-finished details no factory replica can reproduce.
- Leather-wrapped wooden scabbard — fitted to the blade, with your choice of leather colour (Black, Brown, Yellow, Green, or Blue).
- Cosplay & convention safe — request a blunted edge in your order notes and the same blade ships convention-ready.
The Story Behind the Sword
In First Knight, Sir Malagant is one of King Arthur's most trusted Knights of the Round Table — until ambition and pride turn him against the king. Played by Ben Cross with cold, contained menace, Malagant becomes the archetypal Arthurian villain: a knight who knows the code of honour but chooses power over loyalty. The sword reflects the character. Where Arthur's blade and Lancelot's are clean, traditional, and noble in profile, Malagant's is jagged, theatrical, and aggressive — a weapon meant to unsettle the eye even before it draws blood.
The crescent cut-outs that define the blade aren't historical (no real medieval sword was ever made this way), but they serve the story: they tell you immediately, the moment Malagant draws steel, that this is a man who broke from tradition. For collectors of Arthurian and medieval-fantasy cinema, Sir Malagant's sword is one of the most distinctive movie blades ever produced.

Built For
- Arthurian-legend collectors — for buyers building a King Arthur / Camelot / Knights of the Round Table sword collection. The Sir Malagant Sword sits as the villain piece alongside Excalibur, Lancelot's sword, and other Arthurian replicas.
- First Knight (1995) film fans — for buyers who want the most distinctive blade from the film. Ben Cross's villain weapon is more memorable than the heroes' swords precisely because of the crescent-cut design.
- Medieval reenactment & Renaissance Faire — full-tang construction and 5160 spring steel hold up to display, light cutting practice, and reenactment use. Add "Blunt edge for cosplay" for safe convention carry.
- Display & collection — the dramatic crescent-cut blade reads powerfully on a wall mount or in a glass display case. Pairs with our wooden display stands for a gallery presentation.
- Cosplay & medieval costume builds — for villain-character cosplay (Sir Malagant, generic medieval villain knights, fantasy bad-guy builds). The visual distinctiveness is the point.
- Gift — leather-wrapped scabbard, free engraving, and the unique design make this one of our most-requested gift swords for film-fan and Arthurian-legend enthusiasts.
Cosplay, Conventions & LARP
The Sir Malagant Sword is one of our most cosplay-friendly Arthurian blades — the crescent-cut design photographs strikingly under stage lighting, and the leather-wrapped grip is comfortable for extended convention carry. Most events require blunt edges for safety and weapon-policy compliance.
You don't need a separate cosplay version. Just add "Blunt edge for cosplay" in the order notes when you check out, and our smiths will ship the blade convention-ready — same forged steel, same crescent-cut design, same full-tang, just rounded edges instead of working ones. Always confirm your specific event's weapon-policy beforehand. If you decide later you want a working edge, any competent sharpener can do it.
Pair with Our Other Movie Sword Replicas

- Sword of Boromir — 22" hand-forged Lord of the Rings replica.
- Sword of Erik Killmonger — Black Panther (2018) Wakandan blade.
- Browse the full Movie Swords collection — Hellboy II, The Mummy, Predator, LOTR, and more.
Care & Maintenance
5160 spring steel is high-carbon and will rust if neglected. With basic care it will outlive you. After handling, wipe the blade down with a soft cloth, apply a thin coat of mineral or camellia oil, and store the sword in its leather scabbard or on a display stand. Pay attention to the inside of the crescent cut-outs — these traps moisture more readily than a standard flat blade. The leather-wrapped handle should be conditioned periodically with leather conditioner. The blade can be re-sharpened by any competent knife or sword sharpener — it does not need a specialist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this the same sword Ben Cross used in First Knight (1995)?
This is a faithful hand-forged interpretation of the sword carried by Sir Malagant in the 1995 film. The original screen-used hero prop was made from aluminium with painted gold fittings (it occasionally surfaces at Propstore auctions for £4,000+). Ours differs in two important ways: it is forged from real 5160 high-carbon steel (the original was non-functional aluminium), and it is built to a 33-inch overall length proportional to a working sword (the original screen prop was 39" full size). The crescent-cut blade design, ribbed ricasso, two-handed grip, and overall silhouette are faithfully reproduced.
Why is it called Sir Malagant's sword? What's the story?
In First Knight (1995), Sir Malagant (played by Ben Cross) is a Knight of the Round Table who rebels against King Arthur and tries to seize the throne of Camelot. His sword — with its distinctive crescent cut-outs and golden fittings — is the visual signature of his villainy throughout the film. He is finally defeated in the climactic Camelot battle, when Lancelot (Richard Gere) is disarmed and seizes Arthur's fallen sword to strike him down. For Arthurian-legend collectors, Sir Malagant's blade is one of the most distinctive villain swords in film history.
What are the crescent cut-outs in the blade for?
They are decorative — the film's prop department designed them to give the sword a visually aggressive, "draconian" feel that distinguishes Malagant's blade from the heroes' more traditional swords. No real medieval sword was ever cut this way (the cut-outs would weaken the blade structurally), but for a film replica or display piece, they are the single most recognisable feature of the design. Our crescent cuts are hand-finished into a 5160 steel blade thick enough to remain structurally sound for display, light cutting practice, and reenactment use.
Is the blade actually sharp and battle-ready?
Yes, by default. The blade ships with a working sharpened edge. The 5160 spring steel is the same material we use for our battle-ready historical swords — water-tempered, full-tang, capable of real cutting practice. If you want a display-only version with a blunt edge, request "Blunt edge for cosplay" in your order notes at checkout.
Can I match the leather colours to the original 1995 film prop?
Yes. The screen-used Ben Cross prop has brown leather wrap on both the handle and the scabbard. Choose Brown for both the Handle Wrap and Scabbard options to match the film. If you prefer a custom palette — black with red wrap for a darker look, or coloured leather to match a costume build — choose any combination from the six available leather options.
Can the blade length and finish be customised?
Yes. Five blade lengths from 20 to 28 inches: 20" (compact display), 22", 24" (default — most film-faithful proportion), 26", or 28" (full battle-ready). Four blade finishes: Satin (default), Polished/Mirror, Raw Forge, or Blacked/Coated. Six handle leather wrap colours and five scabbard leather colours. Free engraving and personalisation included.
How long does the order take to ship?
Standard configurations typically ship within 5 to 10 business days. Heavily customised builds — non-standard blade lengths, deep engraving, custom photo engraving — usually take 3 to 5 weeks because each piece is forged to order. Worldwide shipping is via DHL or FedEx with full tracking.
Will the blade rust? How do I look after it?
5160 spring steel is high-carbon and not stainless — it will rust if neglected. With basic care it will outlast you. Wipe the blade clean after handling, apply a thin coat of mineral or camellia oil, and store in the leather scabbard or on a display stand. Pay particular attention to the inside of the crescent cut-outs, where moisture can collect more easily than on a standard flat blade. The leather wrap on the handle should be conditioned periodically.
