Seax Dagger — 19-Inch Hand-Forged Anglo-Saxon Long Dagger with a Broad Blade
This is a hand-forged seax dagger — a 19-inch single-edged Anglo-Saxon long dagger forged in Nepal from oil-tempered high-carbon steel, full-tang, with a broad 2.2-inch blade and brass fittings. At 27 inches overall it sits right at the boundary between dagger and short sword, exactly as the historical seax did — a big, functional Anglo-Saxon dagger built to cut, not just to display.
The seax — or sax — was the single-edged blade of the Anglo-Saxons, used across northern Europe from the late Roman era into the early medieval period as both a working tool and a mark of status. This one revives the long-dagger form of that blade: broad through the body for cutting power, drawn out to a long fine point, and big enough to bridge the gap between knife and sword the way the originals did.
The 19-inch blade is oil-tempered for durability and edge stability, polished, and set on an 8-inch full tang finished with a brass bolster and pommel for balance and grip. It comes in a leather-covered wooden scabbard. Order it from 16 inches up to 24 inches if you want to size the blade to your hand and use.
Honest note: this is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Anglo-Saxon seax long dagger, historically inspired rather than a museum-exact replica of one specific find. It is live steel — sharp, full-tang and functional — made for cutting, reenactment, collection and display, but not for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring. Want a specific historical seax recreated exactly? That is a custom build.

Choose your options →Dagger or Short Sword?
Both, by design. The historical seax stretched from small belt knives all the way up to sword-length blades, and the long dagger sat right in the middle — too big for a simple utility knife, not quite a full sword. This seax dagger lives in that space: a 19-inch broad blade with a 27-inch overall length that handles like a heavy fighting dagger and cuts like a short sword. It is the seax for anyone who wants the Anglo-Saxon long-dagger form at full working size.

Caring for Your High-Carbon Seax Dagger
High-carbon steel will surface-rust if neglected. Keep the blade dry, wipe it down after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. For long-term storage, keep the dagger out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry, and re-oil now and then to protect the finish and edge.

What is a seax dagger?
A seax dagger is the long-dagger form of the seax, the single-edged blade of the Anglo-Saxons used across northern Europe from the late Roman era into the early medieval period. It bridges knife and short sword. This one is a broad 19-inch Anglo-Saxon seax dagger.
Is it a dagger or a short sword?
It sits at the boundary of both, exactly as the historical seax did. At a 19-inch blade and 27 inches overall it is larger than a typical dagger and handles with the cutting authority of a short sword, while keeping the single-edged seax form.
How big and heavy is it?
The blade is 19 inches long and a broad 2.2 inches wide, with a 27-inch overall length. It weighs around 0.86 kg without the scabbard, or about 1.12 kg with it.
What does oil-tempered mean?
Oil-tempering is a heat-treatment that quenches the hot blade in oil rather than water. It gives a tough, stable edge with less risk of stress cracking, which suits a broad working blade like this one.
What steel is it made from, and is it full tang?
It is hand-forged from high-carbon steel, oil-tempered for durability and edge stability, and built full-tang for strength and balance. That makes it a functional working dagger, not a display-only piece.
How historically accurate is it?
It is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Anglo-Saxon seax long dagger — historically inspired and true to the single-edged broad form, rather than a museum-exact copy of one specific find. For an exact recreation, order a custom build.
Does it come sharpened and ready to use?
Yes. Each blade is hand-sharpened and ready to use on arrival. It is live steel — sharp and functional — so it is not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.
What blade lengths can I order?
The standard blade is 19 inches. You can order it from 16 inches up to 24 inches to size the blade to your hand and intended use.
What is the handle like?
An 8-inch full tang finished with a brass bolster and pommel for balance and a secure grip. Handle wood options include rosewood, white-wood, horn and combinations to order.
Does it come with a scabbard?
Yes. Every Seax Dagger ships with a leather-covered wooden scabbard, in your chosen colour from black, brown, yellow, red, green or blue.
Do you ship internationally?
Yes. We ship worldwide by tracked, insured DHL or FedEx with secure checkout. Please check edged-weapon import rules for your country before ordering, as they vary.
How do I care for the blade?
Keep this high-carbon blade dry, wipe it after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. For long-term storage keep it out of the scabbard so the edge stays dry, and re-oil occasionally to prevent surface rust.
