Saxon Langseax Sword — 18-Inch Hand-Forged Viking Langsax Blade

This is a hand-forged Saxon langseax sword — an 18-inch single-edged blade forged in Nepal from reclaimed 5160 leaf-spring steel, full-tang and water-tempered. The langseax (also spelled langsax or lang seax) was the long war-knife of the Saxons and early medieval Germanic tribes — the blade that bridges a short sword and a heavy-duty chopper. This one revives it as a working, collectible piece with a leather-wrapped rosewood handle, available in lengths up to 26 inches.

Where a short seax rode the belt as a utility knife, the langseax stretched to sword length and became a primary sidearm — long enough to fight with, heavy enough to work with. Saxon and Anglo-Saxon warriors carried it across early medieval Europe as their do-everything blade. This Saxon Langseax keeps that proportion and purpose: simple, strong and built to be used.

The 18-inch semi-polished blade sits on a full tang for strength and balance, with a 6-inch rosewood handle wrapped in leather for a firm, secure grip. The 5160 spring steel takes a hard, water-tempered edge that holds up to real cutting. Order it out to 26 inches for a longer, more commanding langsax.

Honest note: this is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Saxon langseax, historically inspired rather than a museum-exact replica of one specific find. It is live steel — sharp, full-tang and functional — made for cutting, reenactment, collection and display, but not for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring. Want a specific historical langseax recreated exactly? That is a custom build.

What Is a Langseax?

A langseax — literally a long seax, and often spelled langsax — is the sword-length form of the seax, the single-edged blade used across the Saxon, Anglo-Saxon and Viking world. From the 7th century onward it served as a primary sidearm: longer than a utility seax, shorter and simpler than a war sword, and tough enough to double as a heavy working blade. That all-rounder role is exactly what this Saxon Langseax Sword is built to revive.

Caring for Your High-Carbon Langseax

5160 is a high-carbon steel and will surface-rust if neglected. Keep the blade dry, wipe it down after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. For long-term storage, keep the langseax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry, and re-oil the blade now and then to protect the finish and edge.

Saxon Langseax Sword — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a langseax?

A langseax — literally a long seax, often spelled langsax — is the sword-length form of the seax, the single-edged blade carried across the Saxon, Anglo-Saxon and Viking world. From the 7th century onward it served as a primary sidearm: longer than a utility seax, simpler than a war sword, and tough enough to work as a heavy blade. This one is an 18-inch Saxon langseax.

Is langseax the same as langsax?

Yes. Langseax and langsax are spellings of the same blade — the long seax. You will also see it written lang seax. They all refer to the sword-length single-edged seax of the early medieval Germanic and Norse world.

Is it a sword or a knife?

At 18 inches it is sword-length and handles as a single-edged short sword, while keeping the everyday usefulness the seax was known for. The langseax sits between large knife and short sword by design.

How historically accurate is it?

It is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Saxon langseax — historically inspired and true to the long single-edged form, rather than a museum-exact copy of one specific find. For a particular historical langseax recreated precisely, order it as a custom build.

What steel is it made from, and is it full tang?

It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, water-tempered for toughness and edge retention, and built full-tang for strength and balance. That makes it a functional working sword, not a display-only piece.

Does it come sharpened and ready to use?

Yes. Each blade is hand-sharpened and ready to use on arrival. It is live steel — sharp and functional — so it is not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.

How long a blade can I order?

The standard blade is 18 inches. You can order it from 16 inches up to 26 inches for a longer, more commanding langseax.

How heavy is it?

It weighs around 950 grams. That gives the blade real mass behind the edge for cutting, while the full tang keeps it balanced in the hand.

Can I choose the handle and scabbard?

Yes. The handle comes in rosewood or white-wood, wrapped in leather as standard, and the leather-wrapped wooden scabbard is available in black, brown, yellow, red, green and blue.

Can I personalise or engrave it?

Yes. You can add a name, initials, runes or a short message, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalisation is included at no extra charge on standard builds.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide by tracked, insured DHL or FedEx with secure checkout. Please check edged-weapon import rules for your country before ordering, as they vary.

How do I care for the blade?

Keep this high-carbon blade dry, wipe it after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. For long-term storage keep the langseax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry, and re-oil occasionally to prevent surface rust.
