The Roman gladius was the standard sidearm of the Roman legionary from approximately the 3rd century BCE through the early 3rd century AD — over 500 years of continuous military service. Adopted from the Celtiberian tribes of Iberia (giving it the name gladius hispaniensis), the design was refined repeatedly by Roman armourers into the patterns we know today.
The genius of the gladius was its combination of length and geometry. At 16 to 24 inches it was short enough for the close-quarters combat that defined Roman tactics — legionaries fighting shoulder-to-shoulder, using the scutum (large rectangular shield) for defence and the gladius for short, precise thrusts to the gut, throat, or face of the enemy. The blade was double-edged for cutting where space permitted, but the primary attack was the thrust — faster, more lethal, and harder to block than a slash.
The gladius was eventually replaced by the longer spatha during the late Imperial era as Roman tactics shifted toward more mobile cavalry warfare. But the gladius remains the most iconic short sword in military history — the blade that, more than any other, built the Roman Empire.

What is a Roman Gladius?
The gladius (Latin for "sword") was the standard sidearm of the Roman legionary from approximately 3rd century BCE through the 3rd century AD. It was a short, double-edged sword typically 16 to 24 inches in blade length, designed for close-quarters thrust-and-cut combat. The Romans adopted it from the Celtiberian tribes of Iberia and refined it through several patterns — the Hispaniensis, Mainz, Fulham, and Pompeii types.
What length gladius should I buy?
Most buyers choose the 22-inch Republican Gladius — it is our bestseller and represents the optimal Roman legionary length for both authenticity and practical handling. Shorter blades (16–20 inches) are lighter and faster, suited to drilling and lighter cutting practice. Longer blades (24 inches) offer more reach and presence, suited to display and late-Imperial accuracy. If unsure, the 22-inch is the safest choice.
What is the difference between Mainz, Pompeii, and Fulham gladius?
Mainz — Early Imperial pattern with a wasp-waisted blade and long point. Named after Rhineland archaeological finds. Pompeii — Mid-Imperial pattern with straight parallel edges and a short triangular point. The most iconic gladius. Fulham — Transitional pattern combining Mainz and Pompeii features. Named after a Thames find. We forge all three based on archaeological references.
Is your gladius battle-ready?
Yes. Every Everest Forge gladius is forged from 5160 high carbon spring steel, oil-tempered, full-tang, and structurally sound enough to survive cutting practice, target drilling, and reenactment use. They are not stainless wall-hangers. For HEMA sparring or stage combat, blunt training-version gladii are available at no extra charge — mention in your order notes or contact us.
Can I order a custom gladius?
Yes. Specify any length from 14 to 30 inches, any historical pattern, custom pommel and guard design, custom handle material, and personalised engraving. Bespoke commissions are forged through our Custom Forge service — send reference images, dimensions, or written specifications. We confirm every detail before forging begins.
Can I have my gladius engraved?
Yes. Standard engraving (names, dates, Roman mottos like SPQR, regimental crests, family crests, custom logos) is included at no extra charge on the blade or handle. Bespoke ceremonial engraving with gold or silver inlay is available as a premium service. Full details on our Personalized Blades page.
What steel do you use for the gladius?
Standard gladii are forged from 5160 high carbon spring steel — the same material used in heavy-duty vehicle leaf springs, chosen for excellent toughness, shock resistance, and edge retention. Oil-tempered to working hardness. Other steels including 1095 and 1075 available on custom request.
Do you ship gladius swords to my country?
We ship to most countries worldwide via DHL Express and FedEx International with full tracking. Some countries restrict the import of swords above certain lengths — it is the buyer's responsibility to check local laws before ordering. Australia, parts of the EU, and the UK have specific restrictions. Contact us if unsure.
How long does delivery take?
Total typical timeline 8–15 business days. 3–5 business days for forging and processing in our Kathmandu workshop, plus 5–10 business days for DHL or FedEx delivery. Custom and personalised orders may take longer. Full details on our Shipping & Returns page.
What is your return policy on a gladius?
30-day satisfaction guarantee on all standard gladii in unused condition. 6-month warranty against manufacturing defects. Custom and personalised gladii are non-returnable as they are forged to your specification. Full details on our Warranty & Returns Policy.
