Rambo III Knife — 12-Inch Hand-Forged Survival Blade with Rosewood Handle, Full-Tang 5160 Spring Steel
The Rambo III knife (Rambo 3 knife) hand-forged in Kathmandu, Nepal from 5160 high carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck leaf springs. 12-inch full-tang Bowie-profile blade water-tempered for impact strength, polished rosewood handle, hand-stitched leather scabbard with belt loops. The iconic 1988 Gil Hibben survival-Bowie design, made by hand the way working knives are still made — not stamped, not cast, not Damascus-pattern factory steel. Full customisation: blade finish, handle wrap, free engraving up to 30 characters. Worldwide shipping via DHL Express & FedEx International. 30-day satisfaction guarantee. 6-month warranty.
The Rambo III knife is the most iconic film knife of the 1980s — the moment Gil Hibben took over from Jimmy Lile and gave John Rambo a blade big enough to fill a cinema poster. Massive, broad-bladed, with a dramatic upswept clip-point, it abandoned the hollow-handle survival philosophy of the first two films in favour of pure structural strength: a full tang, a smooth strong spine, a Bowie hunter built for the Afghanistan jungle setting where the third film took place. It is the design most casual viewers picture when they think "Rambo knife."
This Everest Forge Rambo III knife (also searched as the Rambo 3 knife or Rambo III hunting knife) is hand-forged in our Kathmandu workshop in 5160 high carbon spring steel reclaimed from real truck leaf springs — the same battle-grade material we use for our combat Roman gladii and Viking swords. Water-tempered for the right balance of edge retention and impact strength. Full tang from blade tip to handle butt as a single unbroken piece of steel. Polished rosewood handle pinned to the tang for decades of working life. Hand-stitched leather scabbard with belt loops. This is a knife built to be used — or kept on the wall for the next generation to use.
Unofficial hand-forged Rambo III tribute knife. Not affiliated with Lions Gate Entertainment, MGM, StudioCanal, Sylvester Stallone, the Jimmy Lile estate, Hibben Knives, Gil Hibben, Master Cutlery, United Cutlery, or any film studio or licensed knifemaker. Inspired by the design language of the Rambo III film for collectors and survival enthusiasts seeking a real hand-forged version.

The Rambo III knife market today is crowded. Amazon and BUDK sell licensed United Cutlery factory replicas in the $80–$200 range — cast or machine-finished display pieces in 7Cr17 stainless. Pakistani makers flood eBay and Etsy with generic "Rambo Bowie" Damascus-pattern blades that look dramatic in photos but use unspecified mystery steel of inconsistent quality. Cheap Chinese stainless replicas at $30–$80 are stamped from a sheet, glued together, wrapped in vinyl. None of these are hand-forged working knives.
This Rambo III knife is in a different category. It is hand-forged from a single billet of 5160 high carbon spring steel reclaimed from a truck leaf spring — the same steel used in heavy-duty automotive suspension systems, proven over decades of working stress. The blade is heated in a coal forge and shaped under the hammer by a smith whose family has made working blades for generations. The full tang is drawn from the same billet as the blade, then water-tempered for edge hardness and impact resistance. The rosewood handle is hand-fitted and pinned through the tang. The leather scabbard is hand-stitched with reinforced corners. Nothing is stamped, nothing is cast, nothing is laser-cut, nothing is Damascus-pattern factory steel.
The price reflects this fundamental difference. Hand-forged 5160 spring steel knives sit in a different price bracket than factory replicas because they're built to be used and to last. Buyers who want a $40 stainless costume piece will not buy this knife. Buyers who want a real working knife in the Rambo III design language will appreciate the difference the moment it arrives.

Customise Your Rambo III Knife
Every Rambo III knife is hand-forged to order in our Kathmandu workshop. That means no warehouse stock, no mass production, and full latitude to build it the way you want. Specify your customisations in the order notes at checkout.
Blade Finish
Choose satin finish (default, most film-accurate), polished mirror finish (+$10, formal display sheen), or raw forge finish (-$10, hammer marks visible for an aged hand-forged look).
Handle Wrap (Optional)
The default handle is bare polished rosewood. If you want a leather wrap over the rosewood for grip security in wet/sweaty conditions, choose your wrap colour: black, brown, red, yellow, green, or blue leather. Wrap is at no extra charge.
Scabbard Colour
Default leather scabbard with belt loops. Choose black, brown, yellow, red, green, or blue leather. Black and dark brown are the most film-accurate; oxblood red or olive green suit a more personalised look.
Free Engraving (Up to 30 Characters)
Add a name, dates, military unit (USMC, Army, Navy, Air Force, Special Forces), memorial dedication, family motto, or a Tolkien-style quote. Engraved on the blade flat at no extra charge. Common requests we've engraved: "MSgt Chic Birdsong (USMC logo)", "Winning is a Conscious Decision", names with KIA dates, retirement dates, family crests.
Custom Logo & Photo Engraving
Upload a custom logo, military unit insignia, photograph, or family crest at checkout for laser-engraved replication. Excellent for veteran retirement gifts, memorial commissions, and one-of-a-kind heirloom pieces. Specify on checkout and upload your file.
Blunted / Display Version
If you need a fully blunted version for cosplay, stage props, or shipping into countries that restrict sharp blades (Australia, UK, Germany, Japan), specify "blunted" in your order notes at checkout. Same visual appearance, no cutting edge or point. No extra charge.
Want a Different Variant or a Custom Build?
The Rambo III blade is also available with a polished bone handle (the premium variant, same blade, different grip aesthetic). For a fully bespoke build — a longer or shorter blade, a blend of Lile and Hibben design elements, military memorial commissions, or matched sets — use our Custom Forge service. Custom Forge orders start at $75 above the base price and ship in 2–3 weeks.
The 4-Step Forging Process
1
Steel Selection
5160 high carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck leaf springs — the same steel used in our combat swords. Cut to billet for your knife.
2
Hand Forging
Heated in a coal forge and shaped under the hammer. The Bowie profile, upswept clip-point, and full tang are all drawn from the same billet.
3
Water Temper
Quenched in water for edge hardness, then tempered for the right balance of edge retention and impact resistance.
4
Finishing & Fitting
Rosewood handle hand-fitted and pinned through the full tang. Engraving applied if requested. Leather scabbard hand-stitched. Quality-checked before shipping.

Shipping. We ship worldwide via DHL Express and FedEx International with full tracking. Transit time is typically 5–10 business days depending on country. Total time from order to delivery is typically 8–15 business days. Some countries restrict the import of large fixed-blade knives — please check local laws before ordering. Customs duties (where applicable) are the responsibility of the buyer.
Returns. If you are not satisfied for any reason, return within 30 days for full refund or free re-build to different specifications. We cover return shipping for craftsmanship defects.
Warranty. Every Rambo III knife carries a 6-month craftsmanship warranty against forging defects, handle separation, or scabbard failure under normal use. Edge damage from misuse, rust from neglect, and damage from non-cutting impacts are not covered. Full terms in our FAQ page.
Care & Maintenance
Oil the blade regularly. 5160 carbon steel is tough but will surface-rust if neglected. Wipe with a thin coat of mineral oil, gun oil, or food-grade camellia oil after every use and once a month during storage.
Care for the leather. Condition the scabbard with leather balm or beeswax every 3–6 months to prevent drying and cracking.
Sharpen with a whetstone. Use a 1000/3000 grit whetstone at a 20–25 degree angle on the cutting edge.
Store properly. Sheathed in the leather scabbard or on a display stand. Avoid humid environments. A small silica gel packet inside the scabbard helps in damp climates.

What is the Rambo III knife?
The Rambo III knife (also written Rambo 3 knife) is the survival Bowie carried by Sylvester Stallone in Rambo III (1988). Designed by American master knifemaker Gil Hibben, it abandoned the hollow-handle survival design of the first two films in favour of a much larger full-tang Bowie hunter with a smooth strong spine and a dramatic upswept clip-point. At 12 inches blade and 18 inches overall, it's the most iconic Rambo film knife and the design most casual viewers picture when they think "Rambo knife."
Is this a licensed Rambo III replica?
No. This is an unofficial hand-forged tribute, not a licensed reproduction. The official film licence for the Rambo III knife is held by Hibben Knives (the workshop founded by Gil Hibben himself). Their licensed Rambo III is a machine-finished display piece typically priced $200–$600. If you want a licensed reproduction with film authentication, look at Hibben Knives. If you want a real hand-forged working knife in the Rambo III design language — built from 5160 spring steel by traditional smiths in Nepal — that's what we offer. The two products serve different buyers.
What steel is the Rambo III knife made of?
This Rambo III knife is hand-forged from 5160 high carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck leaf springs. 5160 is the same steel used in heavy-duty automotive suspension systems — tough, shock-absorbing, and proven over decades of working stress. It's the steel of choice for hand-forged working knives because it handles chopping, batoning, and prying without cracking. After forging, blades are water-tempered for the right balance of edge hardness and impact resistance. It's not Damascus-pattern steel — Damascus is a layered welded steel often used in display pieces; 5160 is a single-billet working steel used in real survival knives.
Why is this Rambo III knife more expensive than the Amazon ones?
Amazon and BUDK Rambo III replicas are licensed United Cutlery factory pieces — cast or machine-finished from 7Cr17 stainless (a budget steel that won't hold an edge under hard use). Generic Pakistani Damascus "Rambo Bowies" use unspecified mystery steel and inconsistent heat treatment. Cheap Chinese stainless replicas at $30–$80 are stamped, glued, and vinyl-wrapped. None of these are hand-forged. A hand-forged 5160 spring steel knife sits in a different price bracket because the steel costs more, the labour is human (not a factory line), and the knife is built to be used hard and last decades. If you want a $40 wall-display piece, the Amazon options are fine. If you want a real working knife, this is the right tier.
What's the difference between this Rosewood version and the Bone handle version?
The blade is identical — same 12-inch 5160 spring steel Bowie, same forging process, same water-temper, same full tang. The difference is the handle. The Rosewood version (this listing) uses a polished rosewood handle — the more traditional, working-knife aesthetic. The Bone Handle version uses polished bone — a premium handle material with a more refined collector aesthetic. Bone is harder than rosewood and takes a brighter polish; rosewood is warmer to the touch and develops a richer patina with use. Both perform identically; the choice is purely aesthetic. Bone is priced slightly higher due to material cost.
Is the Rambo III knife sharp out of the box? Can I get a blunt version?
Yes — every Rambo III knife ships with a sharpened working edge ready for hunting, bushcraft, or outdoor use. If you need a blunted display version (for cosplay, stage props, or shipping into countries that restrict sharp blades), specify "blunted" in your order notes at checkout. Same visual appearance, no cutting edge or point. No extra charge for the blunt option. Some buyers also request a partial sharpen (functional cutting edge but not razor-sharp) — just tell us your preference at checkout.
Can I customise my Rambo III knife? What about military insignia engraving?
Yes — this is one of our most popular knives for personalisation, especially among military veterans and active service members. Common customisation requests we've fulfilled: USMC, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Special Forces unit insignia, memorial dedications with KIA dates, retirement gifts with service dates, names and family mottos, and family crests. Up to 30 characters of text engraving included free with every order. For custom logos, photographs, or complex artwork, upload your file at checkout. Past Etsy buyers have engraved: "MSgt Chic Birdsong (USMC logo)" and "Winning is a Conscious Decision" — we deliver the same quality on this listing.
Is the Rambo III knife full tang?
Yes — full tang construction. The 5160 spring steel runs as a single unbroken piece from the blade tip to the butt of the handle. The rosewood scales are pinned through the steel tang for maximum structural strength. This is one of the key differences between the Rambo III and the earlier First Blood / Mission II knives, which used a hollow handle with partial tang. Hibben deliberately abandoned the hollow handle for Rambo III because his philosophy was that survival should rest on blade quality, not on stowed-away supplies. Full-tang construction handles chopping, batoning, and prying loads that would crack a hollow-handle knife.
Who designed the Rambo III knife?
The Rambo III knife was designed by Gil Hibben, a Kentucky-based American master knifemaker and member of the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame. Hibben took over the Rambo knife design after Jimmy Lile (designer of the original First Blood and Part II knives) declined the project — Lile reportedly couldn't afford the production setup needed for Stallone's larger Bowie vision. Hibben went on to design all subsequent Rambo film knives, including Rambo IV (2008) and Rambo: Last Blood (2019). The Rambo III is widely considered Hibben's most iconic design. For the full design history, read The History of the Rambo Knife.
How is this knife different from a Damascus-pattern Rambo Bowie?
Big difference. Damascus-pattern blades are made by forge-welding multiple layers of steel together to produce a visible wavy pattern on the blade flat. They look striking and are popular in display knives, but the pattern itself doesn't make the blade better — the underlying steels matter, and many "Damascus Rambo" knives use unspecified mystery steel of inconsistent quality. Our Rambo III is a single-billet 5160 spring steel knife — no patterned welding, just one piece of proven working steel. 5160 is the same steel used in heavy-duty automotive suspension systems and military combat blades. For actual use, single-billet 5160 outperforms most Damascus-pattern blades. For display, Damascus looks more dramatic. Different buyers want different things.
How big is the Rambo III knife? Will it look like the film?
Yes. The 12-inch blade and 18-inch overall length match the proportions of the film knife as closely as a hand-forged tribute can. The blade weighs 929 grams (2 lb 1 oz) — substantial in the hand, exactly as Hibben designed it to be. The Bowie profile with the dramatic upswept clip-point reads instantly as "Rambo III" to anyone who knows the film. If you want a different blade length, we can build that through our Custom Forge service — common requests range from 10 inches (more practical for everyday carry) to 16 inches (closer to the original prop scale on screen).
Do you ship the Rambo III knife worldwide?
Yes — we ship worldwide via DHL Express and FedEx International with full tracking. Our biggest demand is the United States, with strong secondary demand from the UK, Canada, Australia, and continental Europe (Spain, Switzerland, Norway, Hungary, Germany). Some countries restrict the import of large fixed-blade knives — particularly Australia, the UK, Germany, Japan, and Singapore. Contact us if you're unsure about your country's import laws before ordering. For restricted regions, the blunted version may be importable where the sharpened version is not.
How long will it take to arrive?
Forging and finishing in our Kathmandu workshop takes 3–5 business days for standard configurations. Custom engraving may add 2–3 days. DHL Express or FedEx International delivery takes another 5–10 business days. Total time from order to delivery is typically 8–15 business days. Tracking information is sent by email when the knife ships.
Can I see what other Rambo knives Everest Forge offers?
Yes — the complete Rambo Series Knives collection covers all five films plus the Rambo Bowie and Ranger Machete companion pieces. For the historical background of each blade design, read The History of the Rambo Knife. For a technical comparison of blade types, grip designs, and how to choose the right Rambo knife for your specific needs, read The Ultimate Guide to Rambo Knife Blade Types and Grip Designs.
