Rambo Part One Knife — First Blood Hand-Forged Survival Blade with Full-Tang 5160 Spring Steel and Leather-Wrapped Handle

The Rambo Part One knife (also known as the First Blood knife) hand-forged in Kathmandu, Nepal from 5160 high carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck leaf springs. 10.5-inch blade in the iconic 1982 First Blood survival design — clip-point Bowie profile, leather-wrapped metal handle, full-tang construction, hand-stitched leather scabbard with optional matched colour. Inspired by Jimmy Lile's original First Blood survival knife, rebuilt as a modern full-tang working blade. Matched scabbard and handle wrap colours, free engraving up to 30 characters. Worldwide shipping via DHL Express & FedEx International. 30-day satisfaction guarantee. 6-month warranty.

The Rambo Part One knife is the original Rambo blade — the survival knife John Rambo carried in First Blood (1982), the film that launched the franchise and defined the modern survival-knife genre. Designed by Arkansas master knifemaker Jimmy Lile, the original featured a hollow handle packed with survival kit, a sawback spine, and a 9-inch clip-point Bowie blade in 440C stainless steel. It became the most influential survival knife of the 20th century — copied by every major knife brand within five years of the film's release.

This Everest Forge Part One knife is a hand-forged tribute to that 1982 design, built in our Kathmandu workshop from 5160 high carbon spring steel reclaimed from real truck leaf springs — the same battle-grade material we use for our combat Roman gladii and Viking swords. Water-tempered for the right balance of edge retention and impact strength. Leather-wrapped metal handle for a secure, classic survival-knife grip. Hand-stitched leather scabbard. The 10.5-inch blade is slightly longer than Lile's original 9 inches — a deliberate choice that gives the blade more chopping reach and a more substantial presence in the hand without losing the recognisable First Blood silhouette.

Unofficial hand-forged Rambo Part One tribute knife. Not affiliated with Lions Gate Entertainment, MGM, StudioCanal, Sylvester Stallone, the Jimmy Lile estate, Hibben Knives, Gil Hibben, Master Cutlery, United Cutlery, or any film studio or licensed knifemaker. Inspired by the design language of the 1982 First Blood survival knife for collectors and survival enthusiasts seeking a real hand-forged version.

Hand-Forged vs Original Lile Design — What's the Same, What's Different

Honest comparison matters. The 1982 Jimmy Lile First Blood knife was a specific design with specific construction choices. Our hand-forged tribute keeps the iconic First Blood silhouette while making targeted improvements based on 40+ years of survival-knife evolution. Here's what's faithful to the original and what we changed.

What's the same: The clip-point Bowie blade profile. The overall survival-knife visual language. The leather-wrapped handle aesthetic. The hand-stitched leather scabbard. The "Rambo Part One" silhouette that anyone who has seen First Blood recognises instantly.

What's different (and why):

  • Full tang construction instead of hollow handle. The original Lile design used a hollow aluminium tube handle that stored a survival kit inside — matches, fishing line, a compass in the butt cap. It was a brilliant idea for 1982, but the hollow handle is structurally weaker than full tang under heavy chopping or batoning loads. Our version is full tang — the 5160 steel runs from blade tip to handle butt as a single unbroken piece, and the leather wrap covers a steel core. You lose the survival kit storage; you gain a knife that won't break under hard use. Modern survival knife philosophy generally favours full tang for this reason.
  • 5160 high carbon spring steel instead of 440C stainless. Lile chose 440C specifically for rust resistance in jungle conditions. We chose 5160 because it's tougher under chopping and batoning — the same steel used in our combat swords. Trade-off: 5160 will surface-rust if neglected; 440C will not. Anyone who actually uses a survival knife oils it as a matter of habit, so this trade-off favours real users.
  • 10.5-inch blade instead of 9 inches. The slightly longer blade gives more chopping reach and a more substantial presence — popular among buyers who want the iconic look at a slightly larger scale. The First Blood silhouette is preserved.
  • No sawback spine. Lile's original had serrated sawback teeth. Ours has a smooth strong spine. The sawback was always more useful for the survival aesthetic than for actual sawing — the tooth geometry is wrong for cutting wood. We optimised for blade strength and clean batoning over decorative serrations. More on this in our Rambo Blade Guide.
  • No compass. Lile mounted a compass in the hollow aluminium butt cap. Our full-tang construction doesn't have a hollow butt to mount a compass. If a built-in compass is essential for your use case, the licensed United Cutlery / Master Cutlery First Blood reproductions retain this feature. If you want the iconic look in real hand-forged steel, this is the right knife.

For collectors who want the 1982 hollow-handle design 100% faithful to Lile's specifications, look at the licensed Master Cutlery First Blood reproductions ($200–$600 range). For a real working hand-forged knife in the First Blood design language built to outlast the original by decades, this is the right tier.

What Makes This Hand-Forged First Blood Knife Different

The First Blood knife market today is crowded. Amazon and BUDK sell licensed United Cutlery / Master Cutlery factory replicas in the $80–$200 range — these accurately reproduce Lile's 1982 hollow-handle design and include the compass and survival kit, but they're machine-finished display pieces with cast or stamped components, often in 7Cr17 stainless. Pakistani makers flood eBay and Etsy with generic "First Blood Bowies" in unspecified Damascus-pattern steel of inconsistent quality. Cheap Chinese stainless replicas at $30–$80 are stamped, glued, and vinyl-wrapped — pure costume pieces.

This Rambo Part One knife is in a different category. Hand-forged from a single billet of 5160 high carbon spring steel reclaimed from a truck leaf spring — the same battle-grade steel we use for our combat swords. The full tang is drawn from the same billet. Water-tempered for edge hardness and impact resistance. The metal core of the handle is wrapped in real leather, hand-stitched and pinned. The scabbard is hand-stitched leather with reinforced corners and belt loops. Nothing is stamped, cast, or laser-cut.

Hand-forged 5160 spring steel knives sit in a different price bracket than factory replicas because they're built to be used and to last decades. Buyers who want the 1982 Lile design 100% faithful with built-in compass will prefer the licensed reproductions. Buyers who want a real working hand-forged survival knife in the First Blood design language will appreciate this.

Customise Your Rambo Part One Knife

Every Rambo Part One knife is hand-forged to order in our Kathmandu workshop. Specify your customisations in the order notes at checkout.

Matched Scabbard & Handle Wrap

Our most popular customisation. The leather-wrapped handle and the leather scabbard can be ordered in matched colours for a coordinated First Blood-era field look. Choose black, dark brown, tan, oxblood red, olive green, or navy blue. Black and dark brown are the most film-accurate; oxblood and olive green suit a more personalised look. No extra charge for matching.

Blade Finish

Choose satin finish (default, most film-accurate to the 1982 First Blood look), polished mirror finish (+$10, formal display sheen), or raw forge finish (-$10, hammer marks visible for an aged hand-forged look that contrasts beautifully with leather).

Free Engraving (Up to 30 Characters)

Add a name, dates, military unit (USMC, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, Special Forces), memorial dedication, or service inscription. Engraved on the blade flat at no extra charge. The Part One knife is a popular choice for veteran retirement gifts and KIA memorial commissions — the iconic 1982 First Blood silhouette resonates with anyone who served in the post-Vietnam era.

Custom Logo & Photo Engraving

Upload a custom logo, military unit insignia, photograph, or family crest at checkout for laser-engraved replication on the blade. Excellent for veteran retirement gifts, memorial commissions, and one-of-a-kind heirloom pieces.

Blunted / Display Version

If you need a fully blunted version for cosplay, stage props, or shipping into countries that restrict sharp blades (Australia, UK, Germany, Japan), specify "blunted" in your order notes at checkout. Same visual appearance, no cutting edge or point. No extra charge.

Variant or Custom Build

Larger 1985 sequel? See the Rambo Part II Bowie (17"). Different blade length, hollow handle, sawback spine, or other custom modifications? Use our Custom Forge service. Custom orders start at $75 above base price and ship in 2–3 weeks.

The 4-Step Forging Process

1

Steel Selection

5160 high carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck leaf springs — the same steel we use in our combat swords. Cut to billet for your knife.

2

Hand Forging

Heated in a coal forge and shaped under the hammer. The First Blood clip-point Bowie profile and full tang are drawn from the same billet.

3

Water Temper

Quenched in water for edge hardness, then tempered for the right balance of edge retention and impact resistance.

4

Leather Wrap & Fitting

Metal handle core fitted to the full tang and wrapped in your chosen leather colour. Scabbard hand-stitched in matched leather. Engraving applied. Quality-checked before shipping.

Shipping. Worldwide via DHL Express and FedEx International with full tracking. Transit time 5–10 business days depending on country. Total time from order to delivery is typically 8–15 business days. Some countries restrict the import of fixed-blade knives — check local laws before ordering.

Returns. Not satisfied? Return within 30 days for full refund or free re-build to different specifications. We cover return shipping for craftsmanship defects.

Warranty. 6-month craftsmanship warranty against forging defects, handle separation, or scabbard failure under normal use. Edge damage from misuse, rust from neglect, and damage from non-cutting impacts are not covered. Full terms in our FAQ page.

Care & Maintenance

Oil the blade regularly. 5160 carbon steel will surface-rust if neglected. Wipe with mineral oil, gun oil, or food-grade camellia oil after every use and once a month during storage.

Care for the leather. Condition both the handle wrap and scabbard with leather balm or beeswax every 3–6 months to prevent drying and cracking. The handle wrap can be re-applied over decades as it wears.

Sharpen with a whetstone. 1000/3000 grit at a 20–25 degree angle on the cutting edge.

Store properly. Sheathed in the leather scabbard or on a display stand. Avoid humid environments. A small silica gel packet inside the scabbard helps in damp climates.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Rambo Part One knife?

The Rambo Part One knife is the survival knife John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) carried in First Blood (1982), the first film in the Rambo franchise. The original was designed by Arkansas master knifemaker Jimmy Lile — a 9-inch clip-point Bowie with a hollow handle, sawback spine, and a built-in compass. It became the most influential survival knife of the 20th century. Our hand-forged tribute uses the same iconic First Blood silhouette in a 10.5-inch full-tang construction with a leather-wrapped handle, built for real working use.

Does this First Blood knife have a hollow handle and compass like Lile's original?

No — this version uses full-tang construction with a leather-wrapped metal handle, not a hollow handle. Lile's 1982 original had a hollow aluminium tube handle with a compass mounted in the butt cap and survival kit (matches, fishing line, needles) packed inside. We chose full tang because it's structurally stronger under chopping, batoning, and prying loads — the hollow handle is the original design's biggest weakness. You lose the compass and survival kit storage; you gain a knife that won't break under hard use. If a built-in compass is essential for you, the licensed Master Cutlery / United Cutlery First Blood reproductions retain that feature ($200–$600 range). If you want a real working hand-forged version of the iconic First Blood silhouette, this is it.

Why is the blade 10.5 inches instead of the original 9 inches?

The original Lile First Blood knife was 9 inches blade / 14 inches overall. Our 10.5-inch / 16-inch overall version is a deliberate enlargement — the slightly longer blade gives more chopping reach and a more substantial presence in the hand without losing the recognisable First Blood silhouette. Most buyers prefer the slightly larger scale for actual outdoor use. If you want a 9-inch version 100% faithful to Lile's original dimensions, that's available through our Custom Forge service.

Does this First Blood knife have a sawback spine?

No — ours has a smooth strong spine. Lile's original had serrated sawback teeth designed for cutting light metal (downed aircraft skin) and notching wood for snares. The sawback was always more useful for the survival aesthetic than for actually sawing — the tooth geometry doesn't cut wood efficiently. We optimised for blade strength and clean batoning over decorative serrations. If you want a sawback version, we can add it through our Custom Forge service for an additional charge.

Is this a licensed Rambo / First Blood replica?

No. This is an unofficial hand-forged tribute, not a licensed reproduction. The official film licence for the First Blood knife is held by Master Cutlery (the licensed maker of Lile-designed Rambo knives). Their licensed First Blood reproductions are machine-finished display pieces typically priced $200–$600 with the original hollow handle, sawback, and compass. We are not affiliated with Lions Gate, MGM, StudioCanal, Stallone, the Lile estate, Master Cutlery, or United Cutlery. We offer something different: a real hand-forged working knife in the First Blood design language, built from 5160 spring steel by traditional smiths in Nepal.

What's the difference between Part One and Part II?

The Part One knife (this listing) is the original 1982 First Blood survival blade — 10.5 inches in our hand-forged version, with the iconic clip-point Bowie profile and leather-wrapped handle. The Part II knife (Rambo: First Blood Part II, 1985) is the larger sequel design — 17 inches overall, more aggressive Bowie geometry, also leather-wrapped handle. Both were designed by Jimmy Lile, both share the First Blood survival-knife design language, but the Part II is significantly bigger and more commanding for display. Buyers often own both as a matched pair.

Can I match the scabbard and handle wrap colours?

Yes — this is one of our most popular customisations and a meaningful upgrade over factory replicas. The leather-wrapped handle and the leather scabbard can be ordered in matched colours for a coordinated field look that no mass-produced replica offers. Choose black, dark brown, tan, oxblood red, olive green, or navy blue. Black and dark brown are the most film-accurate to the 1982 First Blood look. There's no extra charge for matching the colours — just specify your choice in the order notes at checkout.

What steel is used and why not 440C like Lile's original?

Our Part One knife is hand-forged from 5160 high carbon spring steel reclaimed from truck leaf springs — the same steel used in heavy-duty automotive suspension systems. We chose 5160 because it's tougher under chopping and batoning loads than 440C stainless. Lile chose 440C for the original because it resists rust in jungle conditions. The trade-off: 5160 will surface-rust if neglected; 440C will not. Anyone who actually uses a survival knife oils it as a matter of habit, so the rust concern is largely moot. For working use, 5160 outperforms 440C; for display in tropical climates, 440C is easier maintenance.

Can I customise this knife with military insignia or memorial engraving?

Yes — the Part One is one of our most popular knives for memorial and retirement commissions, especially for veterans of the post-Vietnam era who associate the First Blood knife with that period. Common requests we've fulfilled: USMC, Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, and Special Forces unit insignia, memorial dedications with KIA dates, retirement gifts with service dates, names, family mottos, and family crests. Up to 30 characters of text engraving included free. For custom logos, photographs, or complex artwork, upload your file at checkout.

Is this First Blood knife sharp out of the box?

Yes — every Part One knife ships with a sharpened working edge ready for hunting, bushcraft, or outdoor use. For a blunted display version (cosplay, stage props, or shipping into countries that restrict sharp blades like Australia, UK, Germany), specify "blunted" in your order notes at checkout. Same visual appearance, no cutting edge or point. No extra charge for the blunt option.

Is this First Blood knife full tang?

Yes — full tang construction. The 5160 spring steel runs as a single unbroken piece from the blade tip to the butt of the handle. The leather wrap covers a steel core. This is the key difference between our version and Lile's original hollow-handle design. Full tang handles chopping, batoning, and prying loads that would crack a hollow-handle knife. Modern survival knife philosophy favours full tang for working use; hollow handle remains the choice for collectors who want 1982 design accuracy.

Who designed the original First Blood knife?

The original First Blood knife was designed by Jimmy Lile (1933–1991), an American master knifemaker known as "The Arkansas Knifesmith." Lile worked from his shop in Russellville, Arkansas, and his Lile Lock folding knife sits in the Smithsonian Institution. He was a former president of the Knifemakers' Guild and was inducted into the Blade Magazine Cutlery Hall of Fame in 1984. Lile produced only 13 numbered film prototypes for First Blood; surviving Lile First Blood knives now sell at auction for $35,000 to $80,000. Lile passed away in 1991 and his original production stopped. For the full design history including how Gil Hibben took over the Rambo knife designs after Lile, read The History of the Rambo Knife.

Do you ship the Rambo Part One knife worldwide? How long does it take?

Yes — worldwide shipping via DHL Express and FedEx International with full tracking. Forging takes 3–5 business days; custom engraving may add 2–3 days; international delivery takes 5–10 business days. Total time from order to delivery is typically 8–15 business days. Some countries restrict the import of fixed-blade survival knives — particularly Australia, the UK, Germany, Japan, and Singapore. Contact us if unsure about your country's import laws. For restricted regions, the blunted version may be importable where the sharpened version is not.

Can I see what other Rambo knives Everest Forge offers?

Yes — the complete Rambo Series Knives collection covers all five films. The Part II Bowie (17") is the natural next-up companion to this Part One knife. The Rambo III Bowie is the larger Hibben-designed jungle blade. For the historical background of each blade design, read The History of the Rambo Knife. For technical comparison of blade types and grip designs, read The Ultimate Guide to Rambo Knife Blade Types and Grip Designs.
