The Knife That Walked Out of the Jungle — and Off a Civil War Battlefield
The Predator D-Guard Bowie sits at the intersection of two of the most recognisable bladed-weapon traditions in American history. The blade silhouette comes from Billy Sole's iconic jungle knife in the 1987 film Predator — the heavy clip-point bowie carried by Sonny Landham. The steel knuckle guard comes from the Confederate D-guard bowies forged across the South during the Civil War — close-combat weapons hammered out of recycled steel by blacksmiths working in militia camps and small Southern arsenals.
This is not a stainless-steel display piece. Every Predator D-Guard Bowie is hand-forged in Kathmandu, Nepal from 5160 high-carbon spring steel — the same steel used in our battle-ready historical swords — with full-tang construction, water-tempered to a Rockwell 58–60 working edge, and fitted with a solid steel D-guard you can actually trust under load.
Two Traditions, One Blade
The D-guard bowie has a real history that goes deeper than most replica buyers know. During the American Civil War, when the Confederacy could not match Union firearm production, Southern blacksmiths forged thousands of heavy fighting knives from recycled steel — files, rasps, leaf springs, anything the smith could heat and reshape. The full steel knuckle guard was the defining feature: it protected the hand in close combat, doubled as an improvised knuckleduster, and turned an oversized bowie into something closer to a short sword. Confederate soldiers carried them through Gettysburg, Bristoe Station, and a hundred smaller engagements. Identified examples now sit in museum collections across the South.
A century and a half later, when Jack Crain designed the survival knife Sonny Landham would carry as Billy Sole in Predator (1987), he reached back to the same lineage — a heavy, full-tang clip-point blade built to chop, slash, and stand up to abuse in the jungle. The D-Guard version of the Predator bowie carries that same DNA: a working blade with a guarded grip, built for a fight where a slip of the hand costs you everything.
This Everest Forge interpretation honours both lineages. Forged in Nepal by smiths trained in the same recycled-leaf-spring tradition the Confederate makers used, fitted with a hand-shaped steel D-guard, and finished as a full-tang working bowie that any survivalist, collector, or Predator fan can carry, train with, or display.
What Makes This D-Guard Bowie Different
Most "Predator knife" replicas on the market are stainless display pieces. Most "Civil War D-guard" replicas are stamped historical reproductions. This blade is neither.
- 5160 high-carbon spring steel — recycled from truck leaf springs, the same steel real Confederate smiths reached for. Tough, flexible, takes a real working edge.
- Full-tang construction — single continuous piece of steel from tip to pommel. The handle scales are pinned through the tang, not glued onto a stub.
- Documented Rockwell hardness — Spine 22–25 RC for shock absorption, Belly 45–46 RC for body strength, Edge 58–60 RC for edge retention. Most competitors don't publish these numbers because they don't have them.
- Solid steel D-guard — not an aesthetic add-on. The knuckle guard is hand-forged from the same stock as the blade, fitted to the tang, and capable of taking a real impact.
- Long fuller — reduces blade weight without sacrificing strength. The double fuller cuts running through the spine are hand-forged, not machined.
- Hand-finished decorative scabbard — leather-wrapped cottonwood core with metalwork detailing on the throat. Not the plain leather sheath competitors ship.
- Cosplay & convention safe — request a blunted edge in your order notes and the same blade ships convention-ready. Same forged steel, just rounded for events with weapon-policy requirements.

Customise Your D-Guard Bowie
Every Predator D-Guard Bowie is forged to order. The D-Guard offers the widest blade-length range of any Predator product in our collection — nine size options from 12" to 28". Use the option menus above the Add to Cart button to configure your blade:
- Blade Finishing — Satin, Polished/Mirror (+$10), Raw/Forge Finish (–$10), or Blacked/Coated.
- Blade Length — 12" (–$35), 14" (–$20), 16" (default), 18" (+$35), 20" (+$55), 22" (+$100), 26" (+$140), or 28" (+$175). Larger lengths shift the design from a heavy bowie toward a full-on D-guard short sword.
- Handle Material — Rosewood (default), Whitewood / Sadhan (lighter Nepalese hardwood), or Horn (+$10).
- Scabbard Colour — Black, Brown, Yellow, Red, Green, or Blue leather over a cottonwood core.
- Personalisation — add a name, initials, quote, or short message engraved on the blade. Free with order.
- Custom Logo or Photo Engraving — upload your own image for engraving. Useful for unit insignia, family crests, dedications, or commission gifts.
If you want a D-Guard Bowie built outside these standard options — different blade geometry, brass guard instead of steel, hand-tooled scabbard detail — the Custom Forge service can build it from your reference image or specification.
Built For
- Survival & bushcraft — chopping, batoning, brush-clearing, camp work. The D-guard protects the hand during heavy chopping where a regular grip would be exposed.
- Tactical & combat training — full-tang construction and Rockwell 58–60 edge stand up to repeated training cuts. The knuckle guard is functional, not decorative.
- Predator film collectors & cosplayers — Billy Sole / Sonny Landham costume builds. Add "Blunt edge for cosplay" in order notes for convention safety.
- Civil War / Confederate D-guard collectors — historically accurate hand-forging method (recycled steel, full-tang, hammered guard) reproduces the original Confederate D-guard tradition far more faithfully than stamped or stainless reproductions.
- Display — the long fuller, decorative scabbard metalwork, and substantial 990g weight read correctly in hand and on the wall.
Cosplay, Conventions & LARP
The D-Guard Bowie is one of the most recognisable Predator film cosplay props — the Billy Sole jungle knife is one of the most-built Predator costumes at conventions worldwide. Most events require blunt edges for safety and weapon-policy compliance.
You don't need a separate cosplay version. Just add "Blunt edge for cosplay" in the order notes when you check out, and our smiths will ship the blade convention-ready — same forged steel, same full-tang, same D-guard, just a rounded edge instead of a working one. If you ever want it taken to a working edge later, any competent sharpener can do it.
Pair with the Predator Collection
The D-Guard Bowie is part of Everest Forge's Predator-inspired collection. Each piece in the collection has its own identity:
- Predator Bowie — the standard hand-forged Bowie inspired by Billy's jungle knife, without the D-guard.
- Predator Sword + Utility Knife — two-piece set: tactical sword paired with a matching utility companion knife.

Care & Maintenance
5160 spring steel is high-carbon and will rust if neglected. With basic care it will outlive you. After handling, wipe the blade down with a soft cloth, apply a thin coat of mineral or camellia oil, and store the blade in its scabbard or on a display stand away from direct humidity. Pay particular attention to the inside of the D-guard, which can trap moisture. The blade can be re-sharpened by any competent knife sharpener — it does not need a specialist.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is this Predator D-Guard Bowie inspired by the 1987 film?
Yes — the blade silhouette is drawn from the heavy clip-point bowie carried by Billy Sole (Sonny Landham) in Predator (1987), originally designed by Jack Crain. The D-guard knuckle guard is an addition drawn from the historical Confederate Civil War D-guard tradition. The result is a blade that honours both lineages — Hollywood survival knife and historical fighting knife — in a single hand-forged piece.
What is a D-guard and why does this knife have one?
The D-guard is a full steel knuckle guard that runs from the front of the handle to the back, in the shape of the letter D. It protects the user's hand during close combat and heavy chopping where a regular grip would be exposed. The design originates with Confederate Civil War fighting knives, where Southern blacksmiths added the guard to convert oversized bowies into close-combat weapons. The Everest Forge D-guard is hand-forged from solid steel, fitted to the tang, and built to take real impact — not an aesthetic add-on.
How is this different from a standard Predator Bowie?
Two main differences. First, the D-guard — the standard Predator Bowie has a regular handle grip with no knuckle protection; the D-Guard model adds a full steel knuckle guard. Second, the build profile — the D-Guard Bowie is heavier (990g vs ~700g) with a longer fuller, decorative scabbard metalwork, and a wider customisation range (12" to 28" blade vs the standard Bowie's range). The D-Guard is positioned as the heavy-duty tactical / collector piece; the standard Bowie is positioned as the working everyday survival blade.
What are the Rockwell hardness numbers and why do they matter?
Rockwell hardness measures how hard a steel is on a standardised scale. The Everest Forge D-Guard Bowie is differentially heat-treated: Spine 22–25 RC (soft, absorbs shock), Belly 45–46 RC (medium, body strength), Edge 58–60 RC (hard, holds an edge). This is the same approach used on traditional kukris and Japanese swords — soft spine to bend rather than break, hard edge to stay sharp. Most replica makers don't publish these numbers because their blades are uniformly heat-treated stamped steel. We publish them because we hand-temper each blade.
Can I use this for cosplay or conventions?
Yes — and you don't need a separate cosplay version. Add "Blunt edge for cosplay" in the order notes at checkout, and we ship the same hand-forged D-Guard Bowie with a rounded edge instead of a working one. The blade is convention-ready out of the box. Always confirm your specific event's weapon-policy beforehand. If you decide later you want a working edge, any competent sharpener can do it.
Can the blade length and handle be customised?
Yes. The default is a 16-inch blade with a rosewood handle, but you can choose blade lengths from 12 to 28 inches (nine size options) and handles in rosewood, whitewood, or horn. The scabbard colour is customisable across six leather options. Custom personalisation and photo engraving are also available — useful for unit insignia, family crests, or dedication blades.
How long does the order take to ship?
Standard configurations typically ship within 5 to 10 business days. Heavily customised builds — non-standard blade lengths, horn handles, deep engraving, larger 22"–28" sizes — usually take 3 to 5 weeks because each piece is forged to order. Worldwide shipping is via DHL or FedEx with full tracking.
Will the blade rust? How do I look after it?
5160 spring steel is high-carbon and not stainless — it will rust if neglected. With basic care it will outlast you. Wipe the blade clean after handling, apply a thin coat of mineral or camellia oil, and store in the scabbard or on a display stand. Pay particular attention to the inside of the D-guard, which can trap moisture. If surface rust appears, it cleans off with fine steel wool.
