Parang Machete — 16-Inch Hand-Forged Jungle Machete from Nepal

The Everest Forge Parang Machete is our bestselling working machete — a 16-inch hand-forged blade built in Kathmandu from 5160 high carbon spring steel sourced from recycled vehicle leaf springs. Inspired by the traditional jungle blades of Southeast Asia, this parang is built for one purpose: cutting through dense vegetation, brush, and wood with serious force. Wide forward-curved blade, full-tang construction, ergonomic 6.5-inch rosewood handle, and a fitted leather scabbard for belt carry.

This is not a thin-bladed weekend machete. It is forged thick, tempered hard, and weighted forward for the chopping efficiency that makes a parang the choice of bushcrafters, survivalists, jungle workers, and serious outdoor users worldwide. Sharpened, full-tang, and ready for hard field use straight out of the box.

Why The Parang Is Built For Hard Work

The geometry of the parang. The parang originated in the deep jungles of Malaysia and Indonesia, where workers and warriors needed a single tool that could clear brush, fell small trees, butcher game, and defend against attack. The wide forward-curved blade and weight-forward balance concentrate cutting force toward the tip — meaning every swing carries momentum that lighter machetes simply can't match. This is why the parang has been the working blade of Southeast Asia for centuries, and why it has been adopted by jungle survival schools, military jungle warfare programs, and bushcrafters worldwide.

Real spring steel. 5160 high carbon spring steel is the same steel used in heavy-duty vehicle leaf springs. It is what professional knife makers and bladesmiths choose when they need a blade that can take impact, hold an edge, and survive abuse. Differentially heat-treated and water-tempered for a hardened edge with a tougher, flexible spine.

Full-tang for life. The steel runs the entire length of the handle, secured with rivets through both rosewood scales. There is no pinned tang, no rat-tail, no glue. This blade will not separate from its handle — even after years of hard chopping.

Hand-forged in Nepal. No machine production. No mass-stamped steel. Forged blade-by-blade by Nepalese master smiths whose families have forged blades for generations. See the full forging process on The Making page.

Who This Machete Is For

Jungle survival & bushcraft — The parang is the gold-standard jungle survival blade. Use it for clearing dense vegetation, building shelters, splitting kindling, and processing wood. The 16-inch blade and forward weight make it efficient at chopping that thinner machetes can't handle.

Trail clearing & outdoor work — Land managers, trail crews, hunters, and rural property owners. Cut through brush, vines, and saplings on overgrown trails. Clear shooting lanes. Maintain firebreaks.

Camping & backcountry — A single tool that replaces both a hatchet and a large knife in the field. Splits kindling, chops cooking wood, processes campsite materials.

Survivalists & preppers — Reliable, hand-forged, no-batteries, no-moving-parts. Built to last decades with minimal care. The kind of tool you stake your survival on.

Movie / film prop buyers — The parang silhouette is instantly recognisable from countless jungle adventure films. A real, working blade for film, theatre, and content creators who need authenticity over plastic props.

Collectors of working tools — A traditional Southeast Asian blade pattern, hand-forged in Nepal using primitive methods. Functional craftsmanship that displays as well as it cuts.

Looking for a More Premium Grip?

The standard Parang Machete is built around a smooth ergonomic rosewood handle — comfortable, durable, and traditional. If you need extra grip security for prolonged heavy chopping, look at our Malay Parang — the same 16" 5160 steel blade, but with a traditional Borneo-style handle featuring a finger guard for hand safety and a hooked pommel for retention during full-power swings. The Malay Parang is $10 more and recommended if you'll be using the machete for hours at a time or in wet conditions.

The Parang — A Brief History

The parang is a traditional machete native to the Malay Peninsula and the Indonesian and Bornean archipelagos. Used for centuries by indigenous peoples of Southeast Asia for jungle clearing, agriculture, hunting, and tribal warfare, the parang is distinguished from other machetes by its thicker blade, forward weight bias, and pronounced curve. Where a thin-bladed Caribbean machete relies on speed, the parang relies on momentum — a heavier blade that does the work for you.

British and Commonwealth jungle warfare schools adopted the parang in World War II, where it proved its value in the campaigns of Malaya and Borneo. Modern bushcrafters and survival instructors continue to recommend the parang as the single best blade for tropical and temperate jungle environments — preferred over the kukri for its longer reach, and over the axe for its versatility.

Our hand-forged version stays true to the traditional Malaysian working blade: a 16-inch curved blade in 5160 spring steel, full-tang construction, rosewood handle, and a leather scabbard ready for belt carry.

Care & Maintenance

After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil) to the blade.

Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage inside the leather scabbard, as leather can retain moisture and accelerate rust on high carbon steel.

Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.

Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Handle care: Condition rosewood occasionally with linseed or tung oil. Avoid prolonged water exposure.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a parang and how is it different from a regular machete?

A parang is a traditional Malaysian/Indonesian jungle machete distinguished by its thicker, heavier, forward-curved blade. Where a typical Caribbean machete is thin and light (relying on speed for cutting), a parang is forward-weighted and relies on momentum for chopping power. This makes it more efficient for cutting through dense brush, small trees, and woody material — the conditions of jungle and bushcraft work.

Why choose the Parang Machete over the Malay Parang?

The standard Parang Machete uses a smooth ergonomic rosewood handle — comfortable, traditional, and 10 dollars cheaper. The Malay Parang uses the same blade but adds a finger guard for hand safety and a hooked pommel for retention — better for prolonged heavy chopping or wet conditions. Choose the standard Parang for general-use working comfort. Choose the Malay Parang if you need maximum grip security.

Is the parang sharpened and ready to use?

Yes. Every Parang Machete ships with a sharpened working edge, ready for jungle clearing, brush cutting, wood chopping, and bushcraft. If you require a blunt training version (for stage combat, prop use, or handling familiarisation), mention this in your order notes — no extra charge.

Can the parang chop through small trees and hard wood?

Yes. The 5160 spring steel and forward-weighted 890-gram blade is designed for it. The parang excels at vegetation up to about 4 inches in diameter and will handle larger material with proper technique. For trees over 6 inches diameter, an axe is more efficient — the parang's strength is the brush, vines, and small wood that an axe is too unwieldy for.

How does the rosewood handle hold up in wet jungle conditions?

Rosewood is naturally dense, oily, and water-resistant — one of the traditional handle materials for tropical-use blades. It will tolerate humidity and rain. Apply linseed or tung oil occasionally for long-term care. Avoid storing the blade in its leather scabbard for extended periods in humid conditions, as leather can hold moisture against the steel.

Will I have to pay customs duties?

International orders may incur customs duties, VAT, GST, or import taxes charged by your country's customs authority on arrival. These are not included in your order total — they are paid directly by you on delivery. Amount depends on your country's rules.

How long until I receive my order?

Total typical timeline 8–15 business days. Forging and finishing in our Kathmandu workshop takes 3–5 business days. DHL Express or FedEx International delivery takes another 5–10 business days depending on your country.

Do you ship to my country?

We ship to most countries worldwide via DHL Express and FedEx International. Some countries restrict the import of large blades — Australia, the UK, and parts of the EU have specific rules. Contact us if unsure about your country's import laws before ordering.

Is the parang legal to own in my country?

In most countries it is legal to own a parang or machete for outdoor work, gardening, bushcraft, and collection. Public carry is often more strictly regulated. It is the buyer's responsibility to verify local laws before ordering. We do not give legal advice for specific jurisdictions.
