Who Were the Medjai? The Story Behind the Sword

The Medjai (also spelled Medjay or Magi) were an ancient Egyptian warrior society dating back to the Predynastic Period (c. 2400 BCE). Originally a Beja people from the Eastern Desert of Nubia, they served as elite scouts, paramilitary forces, and royal bodyguards under the Pharaohs of the Middle and New Kingdoms. By the time of Ramesses II and the New Kingdom era, the Medjai functioned as Egypt's most trusted internal security force — protectors of royal tombs, sacred sites, and the boundaries of the kingdom.

In Stephen Sommers' 1999 film The Mummy and its 2001 sequel The Mummy Returns, this ancient order is reimagined as a secret modern brotherhood, sworn for over 3,000 years to prevent the resurrection of the cursed High Priest Imhotep. Care & Maintenance

After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil).

Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage in the leather scabbard. Display stand or wall mount recommended.

Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.

Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.
