Malay Parang — 16-Inch Hand-Forged Borneo Jungle Machete with Finger Guard

The Everest Forge Malay Parang is a traditional Borneo-pattern jungle machete — the same 16-inch hand-forged 5160 spring-steel blade as our standard Parang, but fitted with a traditional finger guard and hooked pommel handle developed by Borneo and Malaysian jungle workers over centuries of hard use. The finger guard protects your hand during heavy chopping. The hooked pommel locks the handle into your grip during full-power swings — especially in wet, sweaty, or jungle conditions where a smooth handle can slip.

This is the parang as the indigenous peoples of Malaysia and Borneo evolved it for serious all-day work in the densest jungle environments on earth. Forged in Kathmandu by Nepalese master smiths, finished with a hand-stitched leather scabbard for belt carry, and sharpened ready for hard field use.

What Makes the Malay Parang Different

The finger guard. A protruding metal or wood ridge between the blade and the handle that prevents your fingers from sliding forward onto the edge during a powerful chop or recovery stroke. Critical for safety when working at full speed for hours, especially in wet or muddy jungle conditions where a slipped grip can mean serious injury.

The hooked pommel. A pronounced rearward curve at the back of the handle that anchors against the heel of your palm during the cutting stroke. The hook keeps the parang in your hand even on a missed swing — you never have to fight to grip the handle. This is why traditional Bornean parangs always feature this design: when you swing all day, even tiny grip-tension fatigue costs energy. The hooked pommel does the gripping for you.

The Borneo profile. Centuries of refinement in the world's densest tropical jungle have produced a handle profile specifically tuned for the parang's chopping motion — comfortable for thousands of strikes per day, secure in wet hands, and built to absorb shock through the heel of the palm rather than the wrist.

Same blade, upgraded handle. The Malay Parang uses the identical 16-inch 5160 spring-steel blade as our standard Parang Machete. The difference is entirely in the traditional handle — built for buyers who need maximum grip security for serious all-day work or who want the historically authentic Borneo design.

Who This Machete Is For

Serious jungle workers — Land managers, plantation workers, conservationists, and field researchers who use a parang for hours every day. The finger guard prevents accidents from fatigue. The hooked pommel reduces grip-tension fatigue.

Wet-environment users — Tropical bushcraft, rainforest expeditions, river crossings, jungle survival training. Smooth handles slip when wet. The Malay parang's handle pattern is specifically designed for wet hands.

Traditional collectors — Buyers seeking historically authentic Borneo and Malaysian working blades. The Malay Parang reproduces the indigenous handle pattern as it has existed for centuries — not a modernised version.

Bushcraft instructors & survival schools — A teaching tool for what a real working parang should be. The traditional handle design is part of the parang's heritage and worth understanding hands-on.

Heavy-chopping users — Anyone who has ever felt their parang try to fly out of their grip during a powerful swing knows why the hooked pommel exists. If you chop hard, choose this handle.

Gift & presentation buyers — A more distinctive, traditional, photogenic handle design than the standard parang. Pairs well with engraving on the blade or pommel for an heirloom presentation piece. See engraving options.

The Malay Parang — A Brief History

The parang originated in the Malay Peninsula and the islands of Borneo, Sumatra, and Java — the densest, wettest, most challenging jungle environments on earth. For the indigenous Iban, Dayak, Penan, and Malay peoples who have lived in these jungles for thousands of years, the parang was not a recreational tool. It was the daily working blade that built shelters, harvested food, cleared paths, and (when needed) defended the village.

The handle of the traditional Bornean parang — with its finger guard and hooked pommel — is the result of centuries of refinement by people who used these blades from sunrise to sunset, every day, in conditions where a slipped grip meant injury or death. Every contour of the handle exists for a reason: the finger guard stops blade-side slippage, the hooked pommel anchors the grip, the slight curve in the handle absorbs shock through the palm rather than the wrist.

British Commonwealth jungle warfare schools studied and adopted these traditional Bornean parangs during World War II, where the design proved its value in the campaigns of Malaya, Borneo, and Burma. Modern bushcrafters and survival instructors continue to recommend the traditional pattern for serious work in tropical and temperate jungle environments.

Our Malay Parang faithfully reproduces this traditional handle pattern, hand-forged in Nepal from 5160 spring steel and finished with a hand-stitched leather scabbard.

Care & Maintenance

After every use: Wipe the blade clean and dry. Apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil).

Storage: Store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage inside the leather scabbard, as leather can hold moisture against the steel.

Rust spots: Light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and easily removed with very fine steel wool (#0000 grade) and a few drops of oil.

Sharpening: Use a quality whetstone (1000-grit working) at 22–25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Handle care: Condition rosewood handle, finger guard, and hooked pommel occasionally with linseed or tung oil. Pay extra attention to the finger guard area, where oils naturally wear off through grip contact.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Malay Parang and how is it different from a regular Parang?

The Malay Parang uses the same 16-inch 5160 spring-steel blade as our standard Parang Machete, but fitted with a traditional Borneo handle featuring a finger guard and hooked pommel. The finger guard protects against blade-side slippage. The hooked pommel anchors the grip during powerful swings. Both features are centuries-old traditional designs from Bornean and Malaysian jungle culture.

Why should I choose the Malay Parang over the standard Parang?

Choose the Malay Parang if you'll be using the machete for prolonged heavy chopping, in wet conditions, in challenging terrain, or if you want the historically authentic Borneo handle design. Choose the standard Parang Machete if you prefer a smooth ergonomic grip, want to save 10 dollars, or won't be doing all-day chopping.

Is the finger guard part of the wood handle or a separate metal piece?

It is integral to the handle — carved as part of the rosewood handle and reinforced by the full-tang steel running through the handle. There are no separate riveted metal pieces that could come loose over time. The wood is dense rosewood, traditionally chosen for its strength and natural water resistance.

Will the hooked pommel be uncomfortable?

No. The hooked pommel is shaped to anchor against the heel of your palm during the cutting stroke — it locks your grip without pressing into the wrist. Once you start chopping with it, you'll find the hook actually reduces hand fatigue compared to a smooth handle, because you don't have to grip as tightly to keep control.

Is the Malay Parang sharpened and ready to use?

Yes. Every Malay Parang ships with a sharpened working edge ready for jungle clearing, brush cutting, and bushcraft. Blunt training-edge versions are available at no extra charge for stage combat, prop use, or handling familiarisation.

What's the difference in chopping performance vs the standard Parang?

Identical — both use the same 16-inch 5160 spring-steel blade, same heat treatment, same forward-weighted profile, same 890–907g blade weight. The difference is purely in handle ergonomics and grip security, not in cutting performance.

Will I have to pay customs duties?

International orders may incur customs duties, VAT, GST, or import taxes charged by your country's customs authority on arrival. These are paid directly by you on delivery, not included in the order total.

How long until I receive my order?

Total typical timeline 8–15 business days. Forging and finishing 3–5 business days. DHL or FedEx delivery 5–10 business days.

Do you ship to my country?

We ship to most countries worldwide via DHL Express and FedEx International. Some countries restrict the import of large blades — Australia, the UK, and parts of the EU have specific rules. Contact us if unsure about your country's import laws.
