Watch The Making Meet the BlacksmithsWhat Is a Kopis Sword?
The Kopis is an ancient Greek single-edged sword with a distinctive forward-curving blade — a recurved sword shape engineered to deliver devastating chopping cuts. Used by Greek hoplites and Macedonian cavalry from roughly the 6th century BC onwards, the Kopis blade earned its battlefield reputation for cleaving through helmets, shields, and armor where straight swords like the Xiphos struggled. Today the Greek Kopis sword sits alongside the Iberian falcata, the Nepalese kukri, and the Ottoman yatagan as the most recognized recurved blades in world history.
If you're searching for a Kopis weapon, a Kopis knife or Kopis dagger variant, a Kopis machete for bushcraft, or a tactical Kopis for modern use — every form descends from this same fundamental design: forward-curved blade, single edge, heavy point-of-balance, optimized for the chopping arc.
Looking for a Kopis vs Xiphos Loadout?
The classical Greek soldier carried both — the Xiphos as primary thrusting sword, the Kopis as cavalry and chopping sidearm. We forge both, with matching engraving.

Kopis vs Falcata vs Khopesh vs Kukri
The Kopis is often confused with three other historically related recurved blades. Here's how they actually differ:
| Sword | Origin | Curve Direction | Primary Use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kopis | Ancient Greece (6th century BC) | Forward-curving, single-edge | Cavalry chopping, infantry sidearm |
| Falcata | Iberian Peninsula (5th century BC) | Forward-curving, single-edge | Infantry combat — direct descendant of Kopis |
| Khopesh | Egypt / Bronze Age Near East | Sickle-hooked, single-edge | Bronze Age warfare — earlier ancestor form |
| Kukri | Nepal (16th century onwards) | Forward-curving, single-edge | Utility and combat — Gurkha service blade |
If the comparison interests you, see our hand-forged Kukri collection — the modern Nepalese descendant of this same recurved family, still forged in the workshops where the Kopis range is made today.
Kopis Sword FAQs
Are these Kopis swords battle-ready or display only?
Every Kopis we forge is fully battle-ready. The blade is 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, full-tang, water-tempered, and edge-finished by hand. These are not wall-hanger replicas — they are functional Greek swords built to the same standard our battle-ready policy applies to every blade in the workshop. They will cut, chop, and hold an edge under real use.
How much does a hand-forged Kopis sword cost?
Kopis pricing varies by model, blade length, grip material, and engraving complexity. Pricing on each product page reflects direct-from-forge cost — there is no reseller markup, no distributor margin. Compared to a Cold Steel, Kult of Athena, or Hanwei equivalent, you generally pay less and receive a one-off hand-forged blade rather than a factory-stamped piece. Click any product above for current pricing.
Can I get a custom Kopis with my name or Greek lettering engraved?
Yes — engraving is free on every Kopis. We engrave Greek lettering (Molon Labe and similar mottos transliterated to historically accurate Greek letter forms), names, family crests, unit insignia, dates, or any text you specify. Engraving is hand-applied during the finishing stage. See our personalized blade options for full details, or note your engraving request at checkout.
What is a Kopis sword used for today?
Modern Kopis owners typically use them for one of four purposes:
- Historical reenactment — HMB, classical Greek and Hellenistic period displays, hoplite kit
- Collecting — alongside the Xiphos, falcata, khopesh, and kukri as part of a recurved-blade collection
- Bushcraft and outdoors — the Kopis machete profile is an outstanding chopper for camp, brush, and trail
- Wall display and presentation — premium grips (brass furniture, carved horsehead pommel) make for striking display pieces
How long is a typical Kopis blade?
Historical Kopis blades ranged from roughly 16 to 26 inches (40 to 65 cm), with cavalry versions tending toward the longer end and infantry sidearm versions sitting shorter. Our standard range covers this full historical spread — the classic 21-inch Greek Kopis is the most popular, while the Large Greek Kopis and Spartan Kopis variants extend toward the upper Macedonian cavalry length. Custom blade lengths are available through custom forge requests.
What's the difference between a Kopis, a Falcata, and a Khopesh?
Three frequently confused blades, three different origins:
- Kopis — ancient Greek, 6th century BC onwards, forward-curving single edge, used by Greek hoplites and Macedonian cavalry
- Falcata — Iberian Peninsula, 5th century BC onwards, near-identical forward-curve profile, considered a direct descendant of the Greek Kopis
- Khopesh — Egyptian and Near Eastern Bronze Age, sickle-hooked rather than recurved, predates the Kopis by roughly a thousand years
The Kopis influenced the falcata directly; the khopesh is the older ancestor form that influenced both. For the cross-cultural reading we recommend our Xiphos history blog, which traces the full classical Greek blade family.
Can a Kopis be used as a machete or bushcraft blade?
Yes — the Kopis machete profile is one of the most effective heavy choppers ever designed. The forward weight, curved edge, and full-tang construction make it excellent for clearing brush, splitting kindling, and trail work. Many modern owners buy a Kopis specifically as a tactical Kopis or bushcraft tool rather than as a display piece. The blade geometry that made it effective against Bronze and Iron Age armor translates directly to wood, vegetation, and field tasks.
How long does production take and do you ship worldwide?
Every Kopis is forged-to-order — production typically takes 2 to 4 weeks depending on engraving complexity and current workshop queue. We ship worldwide with tracked, insured delivery. See our shipping and returns policy for country-specific details, and our warranty policy for the lifetime craftsmanship guarantee that covers every blade.
Is the Kopis the same as the Spartan sword?
The "Spartan sword" is a popular shorthand that usually refers to one of two blades: the short straight Xiphos carried by Spartan hoplites as their primary sword, or the curved Kopis carried as a heavy chopping sidearm. Both were used by Spartan and broader Greek hoplites — the Xiphos for tight-formation thrusting, the Kopis for cavalry and individual chopping cuts. Our Large Greek Kopis is sometimes called a Spartan Kopis for this reason.
Do you accept custom Kopis commissions?
Yes — custom Kopis commissions are one of our most common builds. Specify your blade length, grip material (rosewood, bone, antler, brass furniture), engraving, and any historical or fantasy detailing you want incorporated. Bronze Kopis recreations, fantasy Kopis designs, oversized Macedonian variants, and historically reconstructed period-accurate replicas are all available through our custom forge process.
