Konda Machete — A Hand-Forged Central African Congo Cutting Blade

The Konda Machete from Everest Forge is one of the most recognisable working blades of Central Africa — a broad, forward-curving cutting blade named for the Konda people of the upper Congo basin in what is today the Democratic Republic of Congo. In collector literature and Spanish-language sources you will also see the same blade called the Congo machete or the machete africano. Closer in feel to a heavy short sword than a working farm tool, the Konda was carried as both a practical blade and a sign of standing across the Congo rainforest.

Each blade is hand forged in Kathmandu, Nepal from 5160 high carbon spring steel — specifically reclaimed truck leaf spring — oil-tempered to working hardness, with a full tang. It is fitted with a rosewood grip and ships with a hand-stitched leather scabbard. This is a piece for Central African arms collectors, living-history reenactment, display, and serious enthusiasts of African material culture. The standard blade is 18 inches, and other lengths from 16 to 36 inches can be specified before forging.

An honest note. This is a hand-forged collector and reenactment piece, an original Everest Forge interpretation inspired by the historical Konda machete. We describe how the Konda was carried historically — the broad-bladed working sidearm of the Konda people across the Central African Congo basin — because that history is what the design expresses. We do not sell our blades as weapons. Because every Konda is forged individually, small variations in wood grain, weight, finish, and leatherwork are natural marks of handwork, not flaws.

The Konda Machete — A Brief History

The Konda takes its name from the Konda people of what is today the Democratic Republic of Congo, part of the broader Mongo-speaking world of the central Congo basin. Across this region, smiths forged a family of broad, forward-curving cutting blades that ran from compact working blades like this one up to long ceremonial swords — a single connected metalworking tradition shaped by the dense Congo rainforest environment in which the blades were carried.

The forward-curving silhouette is not decoration. It is the shape that emerges when a blade has to move through dense vegetation, carry comfortably at the hip in close country, and double as a sign of standing in a settlement. By the 19th and early 20th centuries, the Konda pattern had become one of the defining forms of Central African blade culture, recognised in museum collections worldwide and widely referenced as the Congo machete or, in Spanish, the machete africano.

Why This Konda Machete Stands Apart

True Central African Konda pattern

The broad, forward-curving Central African cutting blade of the Konda people of the Congo basin — the working sidearm form that defines the Konda silhouette.

Built for the Congo basin role

The forward curve and broad belly are the shape that emerged when blades had to carry, cut, and stand alongside their bearer through the Congo rainforest. The Everest Forge Konda honours those proportions.

5160 spring steel, oil-tempered

The same high carbon spring steel used in vehicle leaf springs, chosen for toughness and shock resistance. Oil-tempered to a working hardness — not a stainless display blade.

Full-tang construction

The tang runs the full length of the grip for structural integrity — the foundation of a blade built to be handled, not just displayed.

Customisable from 16 to 36 inches

Standard 18-inch blade, or specify any length up to 36 inches before forging. Five handle options, including the rare rosewood-and-bone and rosewood-and-white-wood combinations unique to this Konda.

Hand-forged in Nepal

Forged on hammer and anvil by our blacksmiths in Kathmandu. See the process on The Making and meet the team on Meet the Maker.

How It Is Made

01

Steel selection

We start with reclaimed truck leaf spring in 5160 high carbon steel, chosen for toughness, shock resistance, and edge retention.

02

Forging and shaping

The bar is heated and hammered by hand into the broad, forward-curving Konda blade — the silhouette shaped by the Congo basin tradition.

03

Heat treatment

The blade is hardened and oil-tempered to a working hardness, balancing a durable edge against a resilient spine.

04

Finishing and fitting

The rosewood grip and full-tang hilt are shaped and fitted, the edge is brought up by hand, and the leather scabbard is hand-stitched to match.

Custom and personalised pieces are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Full details are on our Shipping and Returns and Warranty and Returns Policy pages.

Caring for Your Konda Machete

Wipe the blade clean after handling and apply a light film of mineral or blade oil to protect the high carbon steel from moisture. Store the blade out of the scabbard in dry conditions for long-term keeping, since trapped humidity can mark a carbon blade. Treat the leather scabbard occasionally with a leather conditioner, and keep the rosewood grip away from prolonged damp or direct heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a Konda machete?

The Konda is a broad, forward-curving Central African cutting blade named for the Konda people of the upper Congo basin in what is today the Democratic Republic of Congo. In collector literature and Spanish-language sources you will also see the same blade called the Congo machete or the machete africano. It sits at the working-blade end of a Congo-basin family that also includes longer ceremonial swords.

Is the Konda machete the same as a Congo machete?

Yes — Konda machete and Congo machete are two names for the same family of Central African cutting blade, named for the Konda people of the Congo basin. Machete africano is the Spanish-language version of the same name. If you searched for any of these, the Everest Forge Konda Machete is the hand-forged piece you are looking for.

What are the dimensions of this Konda Machete?

The standard piece measures 26 inches overall, with an 18-inch blade and an 8-inch handle, and it weighs approximately 0.89 kg without the scabbard. The length is a choice — you can specify any blade length from 16 to 36 inches before forging.

What steel is the blade made from?

The blade is forged from 5160 high carbon spring steel — specifically reclaimed truck leaf spring, the same alloy Everest Forge uses on its battle-ready historical swords. 5160 is engineered to flex and recover under heavy shock load, which is exactly the property a chopping blade needs. After forging, the blade is oil-tempered to a working hardness.

Is the blade sharp, or can I get it blunt?

The standard edge is a sharpened, hand-finished working blade. A blunt training edge is available on request for display, reenactment safety, or stage rehearsal where a blunt blade is preferred — just note it in your order before forging.

Can I choose a different length or handle material?

Yes. The standard 18-inch blade can be made at any length from 16 to 36 inches. Rosewood is the standard handle; white-wood (Sadhan), horn, and the rare rosewood-and-bone and rosewood-and-white-wood spacer combinations are available. Choose your options on this page when ordering.

Can I personalise or engrave the Konda Machete?

Yes. Add a name, initials, or a short message, or upload your own logo, crest, or photo for custom engraving on the blade. Personalised engraving is included with your order. See our Personalized Blades page.

Does it come with a scabbard, and what colours are available?

Yes. Every Konda Machete includes a hand-stitched leather scabbard for safe carry and storage. You can choose black, brown, yellow, red, green, or blue leather.

What is the difference between the Konda Machete and the Konda Sword?

The Konda Machete is the compact, working-weight member of the Konda family — closer in feel to a heavy machete than a sword. The 25-inch Konda Sword is the family flagship: longer, twin-fullered, and also known as the Ikakalaka in collector and museum literature. For the full-length statement blade, see the 30-inch Konda Machete-Sword.

How is it shipped, and how long does delivery take?

We ship from Kathmandu via DHL Express or FedEx International on a Delivered Duty Paid basis, so duties and taxes are handled with nothing to pay on arrival. Typical delivery is 8 to 15 business days from order, including forging and processing. Custom and personalised orders may take longer.

What is your return and warranty policy?

Standard Konda Machetes carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition and a 6-month warranty against manufacturing defects. Custom and personalised pieces are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Full details are on our Warranty and Returns Policy page.

Can I order a custom or fully bespoke Konda Machete?

Yes. Specify your blade length, finish, handle, and scabbard colour with the options on this page, or commission a fully bespoke Konda from your own reference through our Custom Forge service. We confirm every detail before forging begins.
