Kilij Sword | Hand Forged Ottoman Saber

The Kilij Sword is a legendary weapon rooted in the warrior traditions of the Ottoman Empire. Recognized by its distinct curve and powerful slashing capability, the Kilij was a feared saber on the battlefield for centuries. This modern interpretation by Everest Forge captures the historical form of the blade while offering robust, functional craftsmanship for collectors, martial artists, and sword enthusiasts.

Hand forged in Nepal using time-honored blacksmithing techniques, this Kilij features a 24-inch carbon steel blade, water-tempered along the edge for strength and sharpness. The pronounced curve near the tip—known as the yelman—enhances cutting power, making the Kilij ideal for devastating slashes. With a 7-inch full tang rosewood handle, this sword is built for real use and long-lasting durability. It comes complete with a handmade leather-covered scabbard for safe storage and traditional aesthetics.

Historical Background

The Kilij (pronounced kee-lij) is a Turkic and Ottoman saber that dates back to as early as the 10th century, but reached its most iconic form during the Ottoman Empire (14th–19th centuries). It evolved from earlier Central Asian sabers and became a hallmark weapon of elite Ottoman cavalry forces, such as the Sipahi.

What sets the Kilij apart from other sabers is the yelman, or flared tip section of the blade, which adds forward cutting weight—allowing for powerful slicing motions while maintaining balance. This design proved especially effective in mounted combat and inspired many other curved sabers across Europe and the Middle East, including the Persian shamshir and the European cavalry sabers.

The Kilij is more than just a sword—it's a symbol of the Ottoman warrior ethos, a blend of functionality, artistry, and legacy.
