Iron Age Tène Sword — Hand-Forged Celtic Blade with a Brass Guard and Fan Pommel

The Everest Forge Iron Age Tène Sword is a hand-forged recreation of the early Celtic swords of the La Tène period — the broad, straight slashing blades carried across Gaul and ancient Europe during the European Iron Age (circa 450 to 50 BC). Hand-forged in Kathmandu by Nepalese master smiths from 5160 high carbon spring steel (recycled truck leaf-spring stock), water-tempered, full-tang. A 24-inch broad double-edge blade, a rosewood hilt fitted with a brass guard, brass collar and a wide flared fan pommel, and a leather-wrapped wooden scabbard. Available in seven blade lengths from 18 to 30 inches — built for collectors, reenactors, cutting practice, and lovers of Celtic history.

This isn't a wall-hanger. It's a real functional sword built to the same standards as our combat-grade gladii and kukris — hand-forged 5160 spring steel, water-quenched, full-tang, sharpened to a working edge. The brass guard and flared fan pommel give it a distinctive Iron Age bearing, while the broad blade keeps real cutting power. Whether you are building an ancient-European arms collection, kitting out for Iron Age reenactment, or simply want a Celtic sword with genuine handmade character, the Iron Age Tène Sword delivers the look of the La Tène era and real performance.

Note: This is a historically inspired original Everest Forge design, not an exact museum reproduction of any single excavated piece. Slight variations in weight, dimensions, grain, or finish may occur due to the handmade nature of the item. It is live, sharpened, full-tang steel intended for collecting, display, and cutting practice — not for edge-on-edge contact sparring or LARP.

An Iron Age Sword from the La Tène World

The European Iron Age was the age of the Celts, and the La Tène culture gave it its signature weapon: a long, straight, double-edged sword built to slash from horseback and in open formation. The Gaulish and Gallic warriors who carried these blades ranged from the Atlantic to Central Europe, and an iron sword like this was both a tool of war and a mark of standing.

The Iron Age Tène Sword carries that lineage. If you have searched for an iron age sword, an iron age Celtic weapon, or a La Tène-era blade, this is the broad fighting sword you were picturing — reborn as functional steel and finished with a brass guard and a flared fan pommel that set it apart from the plainer blades in the range. The straight, broad double-edge profile is faithful to the La Tène form — built to cut, and not the leaf-shaped blade of the earlier Bronze Age.

Our hand-forged version honours the spirit of the Iron Age smith rather than copying a museum cast. The 24-inch standard blade has real reach and presence, while remaining a fully functional 5160 spring steel sword.

Why This Iron Age Tène Sword Stands Apart

Brass-Guarded Hilt

Recycled truck leaf-spring stock — the same high carbon steel professional bladesmiths use for combat-grade swords. Water-tempered.

Full-Tang Construction

A single piece of steel from blade tip to pommel — no welded joints to fail under stress.

Choose from 18, 20, 22, 24, 26, 28, or 30 inches. Match your purpose — display, reenactment, or cutting practice.

Hand-Forged Sword vs Decorative Wall-Hanger

Search for a Celtic or Iron Age sword online and you will find two very different types of product:

Type 1: mass-produced decorative replicas. Stamped or cast stainless steel, hollow or rat-tail tangs, no real edge, no customisation. They look like display pieces but will not stand up to real use.

Type 2 (this one): a genuine hand-forged sword in real 5160 spring steel, full-tang, water-tempered, customisable across seven blade lengths. Built to the same standards as our combat-grade Roman gladii and Nepalese kukris, forged by Nepalese master smiths and made to order.

The difference is fundamental: this is a real sword, not a decoration. Cared for properly, it will outlast any wall-hanger replica by decades.

Storage: store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage inside the leather scabbard. A display stand or wall mount is recommended.

Rust spots: light surface rust is normal on 5160 carbon steel and is easily removed with very fine steel wool (grade 0000) and a few drops of oil.

Sharpening: use a quality whetstone at 22 to 25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Iron Age Tène Sword?

It is a hand-forged La Tène-style sword from the Celtic Iron Age tradition — a broad, straight, double-edged slashing blade with a rosewood hilt, a brass guard and a flared fan pommel. The standard build is 24 inches in 5160 spring steel, an original Everest Forge design inspired by the swords of ancient Europe (circa 450 to 50 BC).

Why is it called an Iron Age sword?

The La Tène culture is the defining culture of the European Iron Age, and its long straight blades are the classic Iron Age swords of the Celtic world. This sword follows that tradition — a broad, double-edged Celtic blade made the way an Iron Age warrior's sword would have looked.

Is the Iron Age Tène Sword a real, functional sword?

Yes. It is live, full-tang, sharpened steel, water-quenched and tempered for a working edge, suited to collecting, display, and cutting practice. It is not designed for edge-on-edge contact sparring or LARP, where a blunt training blade is the right choice — and a blunt display edge is available at no extra charge.

What is the hilt made from?

The standard hilt is rosewood, fitted with a brass guard, a brass collar and a wide flared fan pommel. You can also choose white-wood (sadhan) or horn from the handle options if you prefer a different look or feel.

What steel is the blade forged from?

The blade is forged from reclaimed 5160 high carbon spring steel — the same tough, resilient steel once used in vehicle leaf springs. It is well suited to a functional slashing sword that needs to take an edge and absorb impact.

What blade lengths can I order?

The standard build is 24 inches, and the length menu offers 18, 20, 22, 26, 28, and 30 inches. Choose the size that suits your reach, your cutting needs, or your display space.

What blade finishes are available?

You can choose Satin, Polished or Mirror, Raw or Forge, or Blacked or Coated. Satin is the everyday classic, polished gives a bright sheen, raw keeps the forged texture, and blacked adds a dark coated finish.

Does it come with a scabbard?

Yes. Each sword ships with a fitted scabbard — a wooden core wrapped in leather — available in six colours. It holds the blade securely for storage and display.

Can I personalise or engrave the sword?

Yes. You can add a name, initials, a date, or a short motto, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Standard engraving is included at no extra charge.

How heavy is the sword?

The standard 24-inch build weighs approximately 850 grams. As every sword is handcrafted, the exact weight varies slightly from piece to piece.

How is the sword shipped?

It ships worldwide from our forge in Kathmandu with full tracking on a DDP basis, meaning duties and taxes are prepaid before it leaves Nepal. You receive your sword with nothing further to pay on delivery.

How do I care for the blade and the brass?

Keep the blade dry and lightly oiled, since 5160 is a high carbon steel that can rust, and store it out of the scabbard in humid conditions. Polish the brass guard, collar and pommel with a soft cloth to keep their shine. Cared for this way, the sword will last for generations.
