Handle Types

Handle Types – Full Tang vs. Rat-Tail Tang

At Everest Forge, a blade’s performance isn’t defined by the steel alone — the handle construction plays an equally important role. The tang (the portion of the blade that extends into the handle) determines strength, balance, and control. Below is a breakdown of the two main handle types we offer: Full Tang and Rat-Tail Tang.

Full Tang Handle

A full tang handle means the blade's steel runs the full length and shape of the handle. Visible between the handle scales and usually secured with pins or rivets, this design offers superior durability and balance. Perfect for survival, combat, and heavy-duty use.

Rat-Tail Tang Handle

A rat-tail tang is a narrow extension of the blade's steel that runs through the handle and is often welded or peened at the pommel. This traditional construction is commonly used in cultural kukris and historic swords, offering lighter weight and clean handle profiles.
