18-Inch Seax Sword — Hand-Forged Viking Bushcraft & Survival Utility Blade

This is a hand-forged bushcraft seax sword — an 18-inch single-edged Viking utility blade forged in Nepal from reclaimed 5160 leaf-spring steel, full-tang and water-tempered. Built as a working utility sword for bushcraft, chopping and survival rather than display, it carries a sharp polished edge, a 6-inch full-tang rosewood handle and a yak-leather scabbard, with the widest handle and length choices in our seax line.

Hand-forged to order in Kathmandu · Backed by 2 verified customer reviews

The seax was the do-everything blade of the Viking and Saxon world — sidearm one moment, camp tool the next. This is the plain working version of that blade: no etching, no frills, just an honest single-edged 18-inch seax built to be used. Clear brush, split kindling, prep camp, then hang it on the wall knowing it has earned its keep.

The 5160 spring steel takes a hard, water-tempered edge that holds up to repeated hard cutting, and the full tang runs the length of the rosewood handle for strength you can lean on. Order it from 16 inches up to 26 inches, in a range of handle materials, to set it up exactly for how you work.

Honest note: this is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Viking utility seax — historically inspired rather than a museum-exact replica. It is live steel — sharp, full-tang and functional — made for bushcraft, cutting, reenactment and display, but not for contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring. Want a specific historical seax recreated exactly? That is a custom build.

A Seax Built to Work, Not Just Hang

Plenty of seaxes are made to look at. This one is made to use. The single-edged 18-inch blade has the reach to chop and the control to carve, the full tang gives it the backbone for batoning and hard tasks, and the simple rosewood handle keeps the grip honest. It is the seax to reach for when you are heading outdoors — a Viking utility blade that does real work and still looks the part on the wall when the day is done.

Caring for Your High-Carbon Seax

5160 is a high-carbon steel and will surface-rust if neglected. Keep the blade dry, wipe it down after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. For long-term storage, keep the seax out of its scabbard so the edge stays dry. A quick re-oil now and then keeps the finish and edge in working condition through years of outdoor use.

18-Inch Seax Sword — Frequently Asked Questions

What is a seax sword used for?

The seax was the everyday blade of the Viking and Saxon world — a single-edged tool and sidearm used for camp work, hunting, chopping and self-defence. This 18-inch version keeps that all-rounder role, built as a working bushcraft and utility blade rather than a display-only piece.

Is this a good bushcraft and survival blade?

Yes — that is its core job. The single-edged 18-inch blade and full-tang build handle brush clearing, batoning, camp prep and repeated hard cutting, while the 680-gram weight keeps it light and fast in the hand outdoors.

Is it a sword or a knife?

At 18 inches it is sword-length and handles as a single-edged short sword, while keeping the everyday usefulness the seax was known for. The word seax comes from the Old English for knife, so it sits between large knife and short sword by design.

What steel is it made from, and is it full tang?

It is hand-forged from 5160 high-carbon leaf-spring steel, water-tempered for toughness and edge retention, and built full-tang for strength and balance. That makes it a functional working blade, not a display-only piece.

Does it come sharpened and ready to use?

Yes. Each blade is hand-sharpened and ready to use on arrival. It is live steel — sharp and functional — so it is not suited to contact LARP or edge-on-edge sparring.

What blade lengths can I order?

The standard blade is 18 inches. You can order it from 16 inches up to 26 inches, depending on whether you want a faster utility blade or a heavier chopper.

What handle options are there?

This seax has the widest handle choice in our line: rosewood, white-wood, horn, and combinations such as rosewood and bone, rosewood and white-wood, or rosewood and horn — all on a 6-inch full tang.

How historically accurate is it?

It is an original Everest Forge interpretation of the Viking utility seax — historically inspired and true to the single-edged form rather than a museum-exact copy of one specific find. For a particular historical seax recreated precisely, order it as a custom build.

Does it come with a scabbard?

Yes. Every seax ships with a cottonwood-core scabbard wrapped in yak leather, in your chosen colour.

Can I personalise or engrave it?

Yes. You can add a name, initials or a short message, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Personalisation is included at no extra charge on standard builds.

Do you ship internationally?

Yes. We ship worldwide by tracked, insured DHL or FedEx with secure checkout. Please check edged-weapon import rules for your country before ordering, as they vary.

How do I care for the blade?

Keep this high-carbon blade dry, wipe it after handling, and apply a thin coat of protective oil before storage. For long-term storage keep it out of the scabbard so the edge stays dry, and re-oil occasionally to prevent surface rust.
