Hand-Forged Pizza Axe — 12" Kitchen Axe, 5160 Carbon Steel, Made in Nepal
This is the kitchen tool nobody knew they needed. The Everest Forge Pizza Axe is a 12-inch hand-forged kitchen axe built from 5160 high-carbon spring steel — the same steel we use for our Gurkha kukris — shaped on the anvil in our Kathmandu workshop, oil-tempered, and sharpened to a working edge. It slices through pizza, bread, watermelon, and BBQ cuts with the kind of drama a standard kitchen knife can't match. It's a conversation piece and a genuinely useful kitchen tool in equal measure.
The 11-inch rosewood handle gives you full control and balance. Total length is 14 inches — compact enough for kitchen work, substantial enough to feel like a real tool. The axe ships with a handmade leather scabbard for safe storage. Free personalisation (name, initials, date, or short message engraved on blade or handle) is included with every order at no extra cost.
Whether you're buying it for your own kitchen, as a gift for a BBQ enthusiast, or as a unique addition to your collection — this is a hand-forged kitchen axe you won't find anywhere else. For a fully bespoke build, visit our custom forge service.
How this axe is forged
Steel & cutting
5160 leaf spring steel sourced from recycled truck springs in Nepal. Cut to billet and marked to the pizza axe profile — wide blade, curved edge, tapered poll.
Forge & shape
Heated in a coal forge and hand-hammered to shape on the anvil. The broad kitchen axe profile is drawn out by hand — no stamping, no CNC. Each axe carries the small marks of the hammer that made it.
Temper & grind
Oil-tempered for toughness and edge retention, then hand-ground to the final edge geometry. Finished on a leather strop until it cuts cleanly through pizza crust, bread, and BBQ cuts without tearing.
Handle & personalisation
Full-tang rosewood handle fitted and pinned for permanent strength. Personalisation engraved by hand at this stage — free with every order.

What is a pizza axe actually used for?
More than pizza — though it handles that beautifully. The broad 12-inch blade slices through a whole pizza in two or three strokes, cutting crust and toppings cleanly without dragging. It's equally at home slicing through artisan bread loaves, watermelon, large cuts of BBQ meat, and anything else that benefits from a heavy rocking chop. Outdoor cooks and BBQ enthusiasts use it at the grill for breaking down ribs and splitting larger cuts. It also works as a compact camp cooking tool — the 14-inch total length fits in a pack or kitchen drawer without taking over the space.
And it gets attention. Bring it out at a dinner party and you'll answer questions about it all night. That's the other reason people buy it — it's a conversation piece that also does real work. Frequently asked questions
Is the pizza axe actually sharp enough to cut pizza cleanly?
Yes — it ships sharpened and ready to use. The 12-inch blade is hand-ground to a working edge that cuts through pizza crust, artisan bread, and BBQ meat cleanly without tearing. For best results, use a rocking chop motion rather than dragging the blade across the pizza. Maintain the edge with a whetstone or honing rod the same way you would any carbon steel kitchen knife.
What steel is this made from and how do I care for it?
5160 high-carbon spring steel — recycled from truck leaf springs sourced locally in Nepal. Oil-tempered to ~58 HRC. It's the same steel we use for our Gurkha kukris. Being high-carbon (not stainless), it needs basic care: hand-wash after use, dry immediately, and apply a thin coat of food-safe mineral oil before storing. Never put it in a dishwasher. The blade will develop a grey-blue patina with use — this is normal and protects the steel.
Can I get this personalised as a gift?
Yes — free on every order. Add a name, initials, a date, or a short message in the personalisation field above the Add to Cart button. Engraving is done by hand on the blade or handle. For custom logo or photo engraving (great for restaurants and corporate gifts), use the file upload field at checkout. The pizza axe is one of our most popular gifts — unique, personalised, and genuinely useful.
Is this food-safe for kitchen use?
Yes. The blade is forged from 5160 carbon steel with no coatings or treatments that would make it unsafe for food contact. The handle is natural rosewood. As with any carbon steel kitchen tool, hand-wash and dry thoroughly after contact with food — especially acidic ingredients like tomato sauce, which can accelerate patina formation. Apply food-safe mineral oil to the blade before storage.
How long does delivery take?
3–5 business days for forging in Kathmandu, then 5–10 days for international shipping via DHL Express or FedEx International — 8–15 days total in most countries. Shipping is free worldwide. You'll receive a tracking number once your axe ships.
Can I use this outdoors — camping, BBQ, outdoor cooking?
Absolutely — it's built for it. The 5160 steel handles rough outdoor use better than Japanese-style kitchen steels would. Use it to break down BBQ cuts, chop kindling for the camp fire, or tackle any outdoor prep task. Just dry and oil the blade after use, especially after exposure to weather or wet conditions. The leather scabbard protects the edge during transport.
What if it's not right for me?
Return it within 30 days for a full refund — no questions. Personalised axes are eligible for return within 30 days if unused. The axe is also covered by a 6-month craftsmanship warranty covering forging, heat treatment, and handle fitment.
