Hand-and-a-Half Leaf Blade Sword — Etched Flower-Pattern Fuller
The Everest Forge Hand-and-a-Half Leaf Blade Sword is the flagship of our Bronze Age range — a large two-hander that takes the ancient leaf-blade form and scales it up into a hand-and-a-half sword. The broad 36-inch blade widens to roughly four inches through the belly for cutting authority, then tapers to a decisive point, with a gentle curvature that gives the profile real character. Down the centre runs a fuller carrying a finely etched flower-pattern panel — the signature of this piece. Hand-forged in Kathmandu from 5160 high carbon steel, oil-tempered, polished, full-tang, with an iron guard and pommel and a rosewood grip, finished with a wood-core leather scabbard. Available in blade lengths from 22 to 36 inches — built for collectors, display, cutting practice, and lovers of ancient history.
This isn't a wall-hanger. It is a real functional sword built to the same standards as our hand-forged gladii and kukris — high carbon steel, full-tang, oil-tempered, sharpened to a working edge. The long hand-and-a-half grip allows confident one- or two-handed control, while the broad, forward-weighted leaf blade keeps genuine cutting power. As an Everest Forge custom-forged showpiece, it is the dressed-up centrepiece of the Bronze Age collection.
Note: This is a historically inspired original Everest Forge design in a Bronze Age leaf form — forged from 5160 high carbon steel, not cast bronze, and not an antique. As a large handmade piece, slight variations in weight, dimensions, grain, finish and etching depth are natural. It is live, sharpened, full-tang steel intended for collecting, display, and cutting practice — not for edge-on-edge contact sparring or LARP.

Customise Your Hand-and-a-Half Sword → Ask a Question →A Bronze Age Leaf Blade, Scaled to a Hand-and-a-Half Sword
Long before iron, the Bronze Age gave the world its first true swords — broad, wide-bellied leaf blades carried from Mycenaean Greece to the Hittite empire and across the Mediterranean. Most were short, one-handed weapons. This sword takes that ancient silhouette and reimagines it at full size, as a flowing hand-and-a-half leaf blade with the reach and presence of a longsword.
If you have searched for a hand and a half sword, a leaf-bladed longsword, or an etched fuller blade, this is the piece — the leaf form kept faithful, but elevated with a wide curved blade and a flower-pattern etched fuller. It is clearly distinct from the straight iron blades of the later Celtic La Tène era, and from the shorter one-handed leaf swords elsewhere in this collection.
Because every one is made to order, this is effectively a custom-forged showpiece — its product line at the forge is literally our Custom Forged Swords. The 36-inch standard blade has real reach and presence, while remaining a fully functional steel sword.
Why This Hand-and-a-Half Sword Stands Apart
Etched Flower-Pattern Fuller
A central fuller carries a finely etched flower-pattern panel — the signature detail that sets this blade apart from every other sword in the range.
Wide Leaf Blade
The blade widens to about four inches through the belly, with a flowing curvature, for genuine cutting authority and presence.
Hand-and-a-Half Grip
A long grip allows confident one- or two-handed control — the reach and leverage of a longsword on a Bronze Age form.
Oil-Tempered 5160
Hand-forged 5160 high carbon steel, oil-tempered for a tough, resilient temper with good edge retention.
Iron Guard & Pommel
Hand-forged iron furniture keeps the design grounded and traditional, balancing the long blade toward the hand.

Hand-Forged Sword vs Decorative Wall-Hanger
Search for a large leaf sword or hand-and-a-half blade online and you will find two very different types of product:
Type 1: mass-produced decorative replicas. Stamped or cast soft metal, often stainless, with hollow or rat-tail tangs, no real edge, no customisation. They look like display pieces but will not stand up to real handling.
Type 2 (this one): a genuine hand-forged sword in real 5160 high carbon steel, full-tang, oil-tempered, with a hand-etched fuller and made to order across eight blade lengths. Built to the same standards as our hand-forged Roman gladii and Nepalese kukris, forged by Nepalese master smiths.
The difference is fundamental: this is a real sword, not a decoration. Cared for properly, it will outlast any wall-hanger replica by decades.

01

5160 high carbon steel is selected and cut for the long, wide leaf blade and full tang.
02
Hand Forging
Heated and hammered by hand to the wide leaf profile and curvature, then the central fuller is ground in.
03
Etching & Tempering
The flower-pattern panel is etched into the fuller, and the blade is oil-tempered for resilience.

Polished and sharpened. The iron guard and pommel and rosewood grip are fitted, and the leather scabbard is hand-stitched.

Care & Maintenance
After every use: wipe the blade clean and dry, then apply a thin coat of light oil (mineral oil, camellia oil, or 3-in-1 oil), paying attention to the etched fuller.
Iron furniture: wipe the iron guard and pommel with a soft, lightly oiled cloth to keep them protected.
Storage: store in a dry environment. Avoid long-term storage inside the leather scabbard. A display stand or wall mount is recommended for a sword this size.
Rust spots: light surface rust is normal on high-carbon steel and is easily removed with very fine steel wool (grade 0000) and a few drops of oil.
Sharpening: use a quality whetstone at 22 to 25 degrees per side. Avoid power grinders, which can ruin the temper.

What is a hand-and-a-half sword?
A hand-and-a-half sword has a grip long enough to use with one hand or two — also called a bastard sword. This one pairs that long grip with a wide Bronze Age leaf blade, giving you the reach and leverage of a longsword on an ancient form.
What is the etched flower-pattern fuller?
The fuller is the channel running down the centre of the blade. On this sword it carries a finely etched flower-pattern panel — a decorative acid-etched detail that adds depth and identity without overpowering the historical leaf-blade look.
How big and heavy is this sword?
The standard build has a 36-inch blade, an 11-inch grip, and a total length of about 47 inches, weighing roughly 2.08 kg. It is the largest sword in our Bronze Age collection. As every piece is handmade, the exact figures vary slightly.
Can it be used one-handed or two-handed?
Both. The long hand-and-a-half grip lets you wield it one-handed for lighter control or two-handed for more power and stability through the cut.
Is this made of real bronze?
No — and we are upfront about that. It is forged from 5160 high carbon steel in the shape of a Bronze Age leaf blade. We use steel because it is far tougher than cast bronze and can take real cutting practice. You get the authentic form and presence, not a fragile bronze casting or an antique.
What blade lengths can I order?
The standard build is 36 inches, and the length menu offers 22, 24, 26, 28, 30, 32, and 34 inches. Choose the size that suits your display space or how you intend to handle the sword.
Is the blade sharpened and functional?
Yes. It is oil-tempered, polished and sharpened, with a full-tang build, and is made for collecting, display and controlled cutting practice. It is not intended for edge-on-edge contact sparring or LARP.
What are the handle, guard and pommel made of?
The grip is shaped from rosewood as standard, with white-wood (sadhan) or a rosewood and white-wood combination available, and the sword is fitted with a hand-forged iron guard and pommel.
Does it come with a scabbard?
Yes. It ships with a wood-core, leather-covered scabbard and a carry strap, in your chosen leather colour. A reinforced chape at the scabbard tip can be added as an option when you order.
Can I personalise or engrave the sword?
Yes. You can add a name, initials, a date, or a short motto, or upload a logo or photo for custom engraving. Standard engraving is included at no extra charge.
Can I order a fully custom version?
Yes. This sword is made to order from our Custom Forged Swords line, so it is the natural starting point for a bespoke build — custom profiles, etching, fittings and dimensions through our Custom Forge service.
How is the sword shipped, and do you ship to the US?
It ships worldwide from our forge in Kathmandu with full tracking on a DDP basis, meaning duties and taxes are prepaid before it leaves Nepal. You receive your sword with nothing further to pay on delivery, including in the United States.
