Gladius Dagger — A Compact Roman Blade with a Ring Pommel

The Gladius Dagger from Everest Forge is a compact Roman blade inspired by the gladius the legionary carried, scaled down toward the pugio sidearm and finished with a distinctive ring pommel. It is the piece for collectors who want the gladius geometry in a smaller, double-edged form — and the ring pommel gives it a profile all its own.

Each blade is hand forged in Kathmandu, Nepal from 5160 high carbon spring steel, oil-tempered to working hardness, with a full tang. It carries a double-edged blade, an ergonomic rosewood grip rising into the ring pommel, and a sharpened working edge. It suits collectors, reenactors, HEMA students, and cutting-practice users who value authentic handmade blades.

An honest note. This is a hand-forged collector and reenactment blade. We describe the Roman dagger and pugio tradition because that history is what the design draws on. We do not sell our blades as weapons. Because every piece is forged individually, small variations in the ring pommel, wood grain, weight, and finish are natural marks of handwork, not flaws.

The Roman Dagger Tradition

Alongside the gladius, the Roman legionary carried a dagger — the pugio — as a short, double-edged sidearm. Compact blades of this kind sat at the smaller end of the family of Roman blades, useful where a full sword was too much. This Gladius Dagger draws on that tradition: the familiar gladius blade form, brought down to a compact size, and topped with a ring pommel for a secure, balanced grip.

The ring pommel — a closed loop terminating the grip — gives the dagger both a positive anchor for the hand and a clean, recognisable silhouette. It is the detail that sets this piece apart from a plain gladius blade and gives it its own place in a Roman collection.

Why This Gladius Dagger Stands Apart

Distinctive ring pommel

A closed ring terminating the grip — a secure anchor for the hand and the feature that defines this dagger's silhouette.

Compact Roman blade form

The gladius geometry scaled toward the pugio sidearm — double-edged, balanced, and easy to handle and display.

5160 spring steel, oil-tempered

The same high carbon spring steel used in vehicle leaf springs, chosen for toughness and resilience. Oil-tempered to a working hardness — not a stainless display blade.

Full-tang construction

The tang runs the length of the grip into the ring pommel for structural integrity — built to be handled, not just displayed.

Ergonomic rosewood grip

A shaped rosewood handle for comfort and control, rising cleanly into the ring pommel.

Hand-forged in Nepal

Forged on hammer and anvil by our blacksmiths in Kathmandu. See the process on The Making and meet the team on Meet the Maker.

How It Is Made

01

Steel selection

We start with 5160 high carbon spring steel, the same material used in heavy-duty vehicle leaf springs, chosen for toughness and shock resistance.

02

Forging and shaping

The bar is heated and hammered by hand into a compact, double-edged Roman blade.

03

Heat treatment

The blade is hardened and oil-tempered to a working hardness, balancing a durable edge against a resilient spine.

04

Ring pommel and finishing

The rosewood grip is fitted and the ring pommel set to terminate the tang, the edge is brought up, and the blade is finished by hand.

Typical delivery is 8 to 15 business days from order, including forging and processing time. Some countries restrict the import of blades; it is the buyer's responsibility to check local law before ordering.

Standard pieces carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition and a 6-month warranty against manufacturing defects. Custom and personalised pieces are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Full details are on our Shipping and Returns and Warranty and Returns Policy pages.

Caring for Your Gladius Dagger

Wipe the blade clean after handling and apply a light film of mineral or blade oil to protect the high carbon steel from moisture. Store the dagger in dry conditions, since trapped humidity can mark a carbon blade. If you add a leather sheath, treat it occasionally with a leather conditioner, and keep the rosewood grip away from prolonged damp or direct heat.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a gladius dagger?

A gladius dagger is a compact Roman blade that takes the form of the gladius — the short sword of the legions — scaled down toward the pugio, the dagger the legionary carried as a sidearm. This piece is double-edged and finished with a distinctive ring pommel, making it a collector and reenactment blade in real, working steel.

What is the ring pommel?

The ring pommel is a closed loop that terminates the grip at the end of the handle. It gives the hand a secure anchor and a clean, recognisable silhouette, and it is the feature that sets this dagger apart from a plain gladius blade.

What are the dimensions of this gladius dagger?

The standard piece measures 25 inches overall, with a 19-inch blade and a 6-inch handle, and the blade weighs approximately 0.77 kg. You can also specify a shorter or longer blade length before forging.

What steel is the blade made from?

The blade is forged from 5160 high carbon spring steel, the same material used in heavy-duty vehicle leaf springs, valued for toughness, shock resistance, and edge retention. It is oil-tempered to a working hardness. Other steels such as 1095 and 1075 are available on custom request.

Is the blade sharp, or can I get it blunt?

The standard edge is a sharpened working edge. A blunt edge is available at no extra charge for safe display and handling, or for stage rehearsal — just note it in your order or contact us before forging.

Can I choose a different handle material?

Yes. Rosewood is standard, paired with the ring pommel. Whitewood, buffalo horn, and exotic timbers are available on request to suit your display or handling preference. Mention your choice when ordering.

Can I have the dagger engraved?

Yes. Standard engraving — names, dates, Roman mottos such as SPQR, or a family or regimental crest — is included at no extra charge on the blade or handle. Bespoke ceremonial engraving with metal inlay is available as a premium service. See our Personalized Blades page.

Does it come with a sheath?

A fitted leather sheath is available on request — mention it when you order and we will include one made for your blade. Contact us before forging to add it.

Who is this gladius dagger for?

It suits Roman history collectors, living-history reenactors, HEMA and martial-arts students, cutting-practice users, gift buyers, and collectors drawn to the ring-pommel silhouette. It is a hand-forged collector and reenactment blade, not marketed as a weapon.

How is it shipped, and how long does delivery take?

We ship from Kathmandu via DHL Express or FedEx International on a Delivered Duty Paid basis, so duties and taxes are handled with nothing to pay on arrival. Typical delivery is 8 to 15 business days from order, including forging and processing. Custom and personalised orders may take longer.

What is your return and warranty policy?

Standard pieces carry a 30-day satisfaction guarantee in unused condition and a 6-month warranty against manufacturing defects. Custom and personalised pieces are forged to your specification and are non-returnable. Full details are on our Warranty and Returns Policy page.

Can I order a custom length or a fully bespoke Roman dagger?

Yes. Specify a custom blade length, a custom handle and fittings, and personalised engraving — or commission a fully bespoke Roman dagger through our Custom Forge service. We confirm every detail before forging begins.
